SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,131, dated November 28, 1882.

To all'whom it may concern V Be it known that I, REINHoLn RoMMELs- BACHER, of Stuttgart, Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ice- Oreepers, which is fully set forth and described in the following specification.

This invention has reference to an improved ice-creeper that is attached to the heel, and so constructed that it may be quickly and conveniently thrown in or out of use; and theinvention consists of a closed yoke-shaped frame that is attached to the heel, and provided with bea rings for a transverse detachable shaft having spurs and a handle at the outer end, said handle being provided with a set-screw that locks the handle to a fixed recessed arm of the frame, or to a hole at one side thereof, so as to secure the spur-shaft either with the spurs projecting downward or with the spurs thrown up, as required. My improved ice-creeper consists of two main parts: first, of a yoke-shaped frame, a, that is closed by a straight bar across the inner wall of the heel, said bar being corrugated at that side forming contact with the heel for binding tightly thereon when secured to the heel by the fastening clamp-screw e at the rear part offrame a; and ofa detachabletransverse shalt, I), having two or more fixed spurs, b, which turn in bearings aof the frame a, one of which bearings is closed, while the other has a lateral opening, so that the spur-shaft can be removed at will. The spur shaft b is provided at one end with a fixed arm or him dle, d, by which the spurs may be thrown up into horizontal position above the bottom of the heel, as shown in Fig. 1, or into vertical position, so as to project below the heel, as

shown in Fig. 2. In the former case the icecreeper is thrown out of use, while inthe latter case it forms a reliable device to prevent slipping on ice. The spur-shaft b is rigidly locked into the two positions described by a set-screw,f, at the end of the arm or handle d, said set-screw f entering either into an opening, f, in the side of the frame or into a recess, f, at the upper end of a fixed upwardlyextending arm, f, at that corner of frame a which adjoins the handle f. The locking of the spur-shaft in either one of its positions by screwing the nut f into the frame a prevents the detaching or loss of the spur-shaft, so that the creeper is always ready for use.

The advantages of my improved ice-creeper are, first, the spurs are applied to the heel above the bottom surface of the same, so that they can be worn on the boot when thrown up without injury to carpets or floors; secondly, the creeper is made without springs either for being attached or for setting the spurs, whereby it becomes more durable and less expensive; lastly, the spurs are not applied to separate plates of the heel or sole, but to an independent detachable spur-shaft. They can be readily sharpened by removing the shaft and replaced in case they are worn out.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of a closed yoke-shaped heel-frame, a, having hearings to a. for the spur-shaft, a fixed upwardly-extending and recessed arm, f and a hole, f at one side thereof, with a detachable transverse shaft, b, having spurs b b and a handle, d, with a setscrew, f, the latter being adapted to engage either hole f or the recessed end of the arm f substantially as specified.
