This invention relates to umbrellas and more particularly to a utility umbrella designed not only for protecting the person of the wearer but also for supporting an article of wearing apparel such as rubbers and the like.

A main object of the present invention is to provide an umbrella with a convenient pocket for supporting an article of wearing apparel.

Another object is to provide an umbrella with a pocket adjustable in length for supporting articles of various sizes and shapes.

Another object is to provide such a pocket on an umbrella that is readily opened and closed.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. l is a side elevational view of an open umbrella embodying a pocket made in accordance with the invention on the outside of its cover.

Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of an umbrella showing the improved pocket on the inside of its cover.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the invention includes the usual complement of an umbrella or parasol comprising a cover ill constructed of fabric or any other suitable flexible material, and a shaft 1 formed with a handle H2 at its outer end. A suitable number of conventional radiating ribs i3 support the cover, and braces 01' links is pivotally connect the ribs to a spider sleeve is slidable on the shaft.

In Fig. l, a pocket it is shown mounted on the outer surface of the cover it between adjacent ribs l3. This pocket is formed by fastening a strip I? of material, such as the material of the cover or any other suitable material, to the cover it by a row of stitching 8. The strip may also be made of elastic material. The strip is substantially rectangular in shape and the row of stitching extends along one end and down the sides to a point, at each side, remote from the other end of the pocket as viewed in Fig. l, leaving the remainder of the strip free of the cover, to form afoldable flap portion 19. A finger piece 20 is formed on the outer free edge of the flap portion midway its side edges for manipulating said flap portion.

A snap fastener socket element 2| is fastened to the cover ill at a point thereon adjacent the finger piece 2E3, when the flap portion is in extended position, as shown in Fig. 1, the socket opening outwardly. Another snap fastener socket element 22 is fastened to the outer surface of the cover at a point substantially midway the ends of the strip 11, and in alignment with the socket element 2|, the socket opening outwardly.

Another snap fastener element 25 is fastened to the outer surface of the strip ll inwardly of and in alignment with the element 24, and a third fastener element 26 is similarly fastened to the outer surface of the strip l1 inwardly of and in alignment with the element 25.

When the flap portion is in flat extended position as shown in Fig. 1, it may be detachably fastened to the cover ill by snapping the element 23 into the socket element 2!, and a flat article of wearing apparel or the like may be supported between the strip i! and the cover I0.

For pocketing or supporting bulkier articles, such as rubbers, the flap portion I9 is bent or folded underneath the body of the strip I! to form a roomier pocket or compartment 21 as shown in Fig. 3. The depth of this Docket may be regulated by the selection of the desired fastener element on the strip I! for insertion into the socket element 22. The deepest pocket is provided by snapping the snap element 24 on the flap portion into the socket element 22 as shown in Fig. 3; the next deepest, by inserting the snap element 25 into said socket element as shown in Fig. l, and the shallowest pocket by inserting the fastener element 26 into said socket element as shown in Fig. 5.

' In this form, the fastener socket elements 2| and 22 are secured to the inner surface of the cover and the sockets opening inwardly of the umbrella to receive the complementary snap fastener elements on the pocket.

It will be noted that the pocket is disposed between the ribs of the umbrella so that the umbrella may be readily folded without interference from the pocket.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

1. An umbrella having a cover, spaced supporting ribs for said cover, a strip secured to the cover between adjacent ribs to define a pocket, said strip having a foldable flap portion at its open end, a number of spaced and aligned snap fastener elements on the cover, and a nuznber of spaced and aligned snap fastener elements on the strip to engage selected cover elements for detachably fastening the flap portion to the cover at selected points therealong.

2. An umbrella having a cover, spaced supporting ribs for the cover, a substantially rec tangular-shaped strip member between adjacent ribs to form a pocket with the corresponding portion of said cover, said member being secured along one end and along each side to a point remote from the other end to provide a foldable flap portion at said latter end, said flap portion having a projecting finger piece midway its side edges, spaced snap fastener socket elements on the cover and cooperant snap fastener elements on the strip member to engage selected i socket elements for detachably fastening the flap portion to the cover in either extended or folded position.

3. An umbrella having a cover, spaced supporting ribs for the cover, a substantially rectangular-shaped strip member between adjacent ribs to form a pocket with the corresponding portion of said cover, said member being secured along one end and along each side to a point remote from the other end to provide a foldable flap portion at said latter end, said flap portion having a projecting finger piece midway its side edges, spaced snap fastener socket elements in aligned relation on the cover, and spaced snap fastener elements on the inner and outer surfaces of the finger piece and on the outer surface of the strip member in aligned relation to engage selected socket elements for detachably fastening the flap portion to the cover in either extended or folded position.

4. An umbrella having a cover, spaced supporting ribs therefor, a strip secured to the outer surface of the cover between adjacent ribs to form a pocket with said cover, said strip having an open foldable flap portion, snap fastener socket elements secured to the outer surface of the cover in aligned spaced relation and opening outwardly of the cover and snap fastener elements secured to the outer and inner surfaces of the flap portion in spaced aligned relation for coaction with selected socket elements on the cover for detachably fastening the flap portion to the cover in either extended or folded position.

5. An umbrella having a cover, spaced supporting ribs therefor, a strip secured to the inner surface of the cover between adjacent ribs to form a pocket with said cover, said strip having an open foldable flap portion, snap fastener socket elements secured to the inner surface of the cover in aligned spaced relation and opening inwardly of the cover, and snap fastener elements secured to the outer and inner surfaces of the flap portion in spaced aligned relation for coaction with selected socket elements on the cover for detachably fastening the flap portion to the cover in either extended or folded position.
