NiTnD STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES O. ILLINGWORTH, OF AUSTIN, TEXAS.
LAM P-CHIMNEY ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,104, dated November 28, 1882.
Application filed August 21, 1882. (No model.)
1 0 all whom it may concern Be it hnown that I, JAMES 0.1LLINGW0RTH', a citizen of the United States, residing at Ans tin, in the county of Travis and State of Texas, have invented a certain new and useful Lamp- Uhimney Attachment, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention is applicable to lamp-chimneys; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the same, whereby the light of a lamp is prevented from being extinguished and flickering by the wind when the lamp is sitting in a draft, all of which will be hereinafter more fully explained.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of a lamp on the chimney of which is shown my device. Figs. 2 and 3 are side views of the device.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, a indicates a lamp, and b the chimney, both of which are of ordinary construction.
0 designates the attachment, which is made of tin, glass, or any suitable material, and is composed of a vertical portion, d, and an inclined tapering portion, 6, and is made in the form of an elbow, or bent at angle to the vertical part cl'of said tube, both ends fand g being open. The portion (1 is placed within the lamp-chimney, at the top thereof, while the inclined tapering portion'e projects therefrom; and to protect the flame the openingfin the inclined part 6 should be turned from the direction in which the wind may be blowing, thus, by its peculiar construction, preventing any wind from entering the top of the chimney and extinguishing the flame.
It will be observed from the foregoing description, and by reference to the drawings,
that I have an attachment for lamp-chimneys that prevents flickering of the light, consequently producing a steady and even flame, at the same time prevents the light from being extinguished by the wind, and also avoids explosion of the lamp, which is often caused by the wind coming in contact with the flame. Should it be found necessary in some lamps to further protect the flame, a band of suitable material may be placed around the burner, and, in connection with the attachment, assist in protecting the light.
I do not wish to confine myself to the exact construction of my lamp-chimney attachment, as various changes could be made in its construction without departing from my invention. For instance, the vertical part that enters the chimney may be slitted vertically, thereby forming springs which would press against the inside of the chimney and hold the attachment in place, and having said springs the same would accommodate itselfto all sizes oflamp-chimneys; and, again, the attachment may be provided with a collar on the vertical part, near the bend, which collar would cover the top of the chim ney, and also serve to assist in supporting the'atta'chment; also, it Will be seen that theattachment is simple in operation, easily applied to and taken from any lampchimney, cheap to manufacture, and can be made plain or ornamental, as desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-- 1. An attachment for lamp-chimneys for protecting the flame, consisting of a tube extending at an angle from the lamp-chimney, and detachabl y applied, substantially as specitied.
2. An attachment for lamp-chimneys, consisting of a tube open at both ends, having a bent upper portion and a vertical lower portion, and detachable from the chimney, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J AMES 0. ILLINGWORTH.
