Description

(No Mode.)
W. F. HOLSING.
EXHAUST STEAM GONDENSBR FOR STEAM PUMPS.
N. PETERS. Pnnlwuxhognpner. wami mmmmmm C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
W'ILLIAM iF. HOLSING, OF UNIONTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
EXHAUST-STEAM CONDENSER FOR STEAM-PUMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of `Letters Patent No. 268,100, dated November 28, 1882.
Application filed September 29, 1882.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. HoLsING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Uniontown, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Exhaust-Steam Condenser for Steam-Pumps, ot' which the following is a specication, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is ai-.vertical sectional view, and` Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line ar Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both iigures.
This invention relates to exhaust-steam condensers for steam-pumps.
In mines and other places where it-is frequently necessary to keep large steam-pumps constantly at work night and day much difficulty has been heretofore experienced in effectually disposing of' the exhaust-steam, which frequently accumulates in such quantities as to make it almost impossible to approach the pump. Attempts have been iliade to utilize the exhaust-steam for heating the feed-water; but it has never to my knowledge been successfully disposed of in this manner.
My present invention therefore has for its object the construction of a device whgreby'tlie exhaust-steam shall be effectively condensed and disposed of, and this great nuisance in mines done away with.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the suction-pipe leading to the steamf pump, which is not shown in the drawings. Said pipeis provided with an enlarged section forming a casing, B,within which is arranged (No model.)
a cylindrical drum or chamber, C, secured or connected to the walls of the casing B by brackets D, or in any suitable manner. The lower end of drum C is closed. Its upper end has a cover,E, provided with small perforations F F. Gr is the exhaust-steain pipe, which extends through the shell of casing B, as shown, just above the drum or chamber C. Here it is provided with an elbow, H, in which is fitted a pipe, I, extending through the cover E into and nearly to the bottom of the chamber C.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood. The exhaust steam, passing through the pipes G I, enters the chamber C, which is completely surrounded by the cold Water passing through the suction-pipe to the pump. Here it is readily condensed, the water of condensation passing through the perforations F into casing B, and through pipeA to the pump. I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination of the suction-pipe A, having enlarged section or casing B, the chamber C, arranged within said casing, and having closed bottom and perforated top, and the exhaust-steam pipe Gr I, passing through the casing B and cover E into and nearly to the bottom of the chamber C, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have heretoaftixed my signature inpresence of two witnesses.
