UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
SARAH A. MCCAFFREY AND CATHERINE M. LEONARD, OF BOSTON, MASS.
ROCKING-CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of `Letters Patent No. 268,036, dated November 28, 1882.
Application filed June 23, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SARAH A. MCCAF- FREY and CATHERINE M. LEONARD, of Boston, in the county ot' Suii'olk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Rocking-Chairs, of which the following is a description sufliciently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an isometrical perspective view,
. and Fig. 2 a vertical transverse section.
' ings.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different gures of the draw- Our invention relates to that class of rockin g-chairs which are provided with work-boxes, drawers, cribs, cradles for children, dac.; and it consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which a simpler and more desirable article of this character is produced than is now in ordinary use.
In the drawings, A represents the body of the chair; B, the main rockers, and O D the cribs.
rBhe cribs consist respectively of a bottom, c, head-board b, side board, d, and foot-board m a. The bottom a is fitted to slide horizontally in an opening, E, beneath the seat of the chair, and is provided with the stop :l: to'prevent it from being entirely Withdrawn there` from. The foot-board m 'n is constructed in two parts, the lower portion, n, being hinged at c v to the side of the bottom a, and the upper portion, m, at v3 i to the top of n. The side board, d, is rigidly attached in a vertical position to the bottom` a, but the head and footboards b m n are hinged at v c to fold inwardly upon each other and upon the bottom, to enable the crib to be housed or pushed into the opening E under the bottom ot' the chair when not in use, as seen on the right of Fig. 2.
rlhe combined convertible crib and workbox may be provided with an auxiliary rocker, G, working in unison with the main rockers,`v
Yand attached to the outer end of the bottom c,
as represented on the left of the drawings; or a swinging bracket, H, may he used, if deble crib, as represented ou the right ot' the drawings.
In Fig. l the crib on the left of the gure is represented arranged as a work-box, the footboard m a being turned up in a vertical position, and secured at either end by hasps (not shown) to the side board, d, and body of the chair, the head-board b being also secured in a vertical position by the hooks r r.
On the right of Fig. 1 the device is represented as properly arranged for acrib or cradle, the head-board being secured vertically by the hooks r, and the foot-hoard m n let down, the part 'changing vertically from the bottom c by the hinges c c, and the-part mbeing secured to the same at an angle of about fortyfive degrees by the hooks z z, these hooks also serving to secure the foot-hoard to the side d and body ofthe chair when it is arranged vertically.
It will be obvious that the cribs C D may both be arranged as work-boxes, or both as cribs, if desired, or one as a work-box and the other as a crib, as shown in Fig. 1; also, that when the cribs are not required for use the head and foot boards may be folded and the bodies a, pushed in, bringing the auxiliary rocker G and side board, d, against the side ot' the chair. l The rocker Gis made 'detachable from the bottom a by the thumb-screws f, and when the crib is not in use may be taken oft' if desired.
Having thus explained our improvement, what we claim isv A rocking-chair having a convertible crib or work-box attachment, consisting ot' a bottom hoard adapted to slide under the seat of the chair, and provided with a suitable stop Mtb the outer end ot' said bottom lSard, a headboard hinged t0 One-std@ of the bottom board and adapted t0 .fQld dat thereogn, and provided WthQSlli-ilmgliooks for supportingit when in upright positie@ and a foot-board composed of two strips hinge together, the lower strip sired, as an auxiliary support for said convertiat its inner end, a side board rigidly attached being hinged to said bottom board, said footposition, and into eyes on the lower strip board being adapted to form an end piece for when in the latter position, substa.ntielly as dexo the box when in upright position, or a footscribed.
rest 'for the crib when the lower piece is swung SARAH A. MGGAFFREY. downward and the upper piece partially folded CATHERINE M. LEONARD. upward thereon, the upper strip being plo- Witnesses: vided with hooks, which takekinto eyes on the C. A. SHAW, chair-frame and end board when in the former E. C. HEATH.
