RUSSEL S. BARNUM, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CLAMP ING DEVICE FOR SEWING-MACHINE ATTACHMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,992, dated. November as, 1882.
a Application filed September 1, 1881. (No model.)
clamp applied to an arm or support having a" straight body. Figs. 3 and 4 are a side elevation and a top or plan view, respectively, showin g the clamp applied to an arm or support, the carrying portion of which depends from the portion having the clamp. Figs. 5 and 6 are a top or plan view and a side elevation, respectively, showing the clamp applied to an arm or support provided with a cutting-edge, so as to act as a thread-cutter. i
The object of this invention is to construct a cheap, simple, and reliable clamping device, by means of which the attachment of one device to another can be readily and quickly where the attachment cannot be readily made.
0 without removing some portion or part in order made, and when made such attachment will be very strong and firm, and at the same time easily unclam ped to permit of removal. The deviceis primarily designed to be used in places to secure some other device in position; but it can be used in other places, and can be applied to various purposes where it is desirable to have a quick and easy form or mode of attachment.
The nature of the invention consists in providin g the device or part to be attached with a notch or recess adapted to receive the rod, bar, or other device to which the attachment is to be made, and act in conjunction with a setscrew to securely fasten or unite the parts togoth-er, the head of the set-screw acting to draw the two devices in contact with each other.
In the drawings three difierent forms of constructing and applying the clamping devices are shown; but such devices can be applied to other forms of devices than those shown, such devices in each instance to have a receiving notch orrecess with which the head of a setscrew coacts.
In the drawings, A represents an armor sup-,
port, thebody ofwhich may beformed as shown, or of any other suitable form adapted to furnish a support or means of attachment. One end of this arm or support is provided with a recess, a, semicircular in form, and the extreme point or end a of the body A is made to project beyond the face of the support on the opposite side of the opening or recess a, as shown in Fig. 2, and this face of the body receives the clamping-screw, theshank of which enters a screw-threaded opening formed in the body in proximity to the opening a, and in such relation thereto as that the head of the screw will project part-1y over the opening. The screw 1) maybe of the form shown, having its head provided with a notch for the reception of a screw-driver; or such head may be formed like an ordinary thumb-screw, the inner face of the head being so formed as that it will bite or impinge on the face of the rod, bar, or other device which enters the opening a.
device, and causing it to bite thereon, such ac-.
tion will draw the portion of the arm or support A around the recess or notch a in close contact with the face of the rod, bar, or other device in the recess a.
In Figs. 3 and 4 the set-screw is located in a screw-threaded opening formed in the head a on the outer end of the body or support, and the point or projecting portion a of the recess, which coacts with the head of the set-screw,is located on the opposite side of the recess from that shown in Fig. 2, such change in location bein g necessitated by thelocationof the clamping-screw b. The head or support A (shown in these Figs. 3 and A) is provided with aside arm or extension, A, to the end of which may be attached any device which may be desired.
In Figs. 5 and 6 the body A is formed from a plate, and the recess a is formed by turning The open-.
' the end of the plate around, so that its ex- I and a clamping-screw having a straight or flat 30 treme end will form the coacting end or part a, and, as shown, the body of the arm or plate A is provided with a blade portion, 0. The device shown in Figs. and 6 is designed for use as a thread-cutter, to be applied to the presserfoot bar of a sewing-machine, the body of such bar entering the recess a and the device being held thereon by the action of the clampingscrew 1), the head of which is brought in contact with the face of the bar.
Other forms of supports or devices than the 7 three shown can be provided with the notch or recess a, and projecting point a, and clampingscrew 1), arranged in such relation to each other as that the notch will receive the device to which the attachment is to be made, and the set-screw, when forced down, will firmly unite the parts together.
This clamping device furnishes a ready and quick means for making an attachment, is very simple in construction, requiring only a notch or recess, an engaging-point, and a clampingscrew. The attachment is very strong and firm, and by the use of the device named the device having the parts constituting the clamp thereon can be readily attached to or detached from the receiving device.
By using a square notch'of the proper size engaging face instead of a diagonal, the attachment can be made to a square bar, rod, or
other device, the same as to a round rod, bar, or
other device, and by changing the form of the notch or recess to coincide with the device to which the attachment is to be made the clamping-screw and the notch can be used for producing a firm attachment.
The needle of a sewing-machine has heretofore been arranged in a recess in the needlearm and confined in place by a screw having its head extended over the needle to bite thereon, and thus hold the same in place. Such therefore I do not claim.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A clamping device consisting of an attachable and detachable plate, having at one end a semicircular recess, a, forming the engaging point a at one side thereof, and a set-screw attached to said plate and having its head extending partly over the recess to bind against a rod or other device on which the plate can be adjusted, substantially as described.
