2 Claims.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in ornamental stands. More specifically, the invention concerns itself with a relatively low stand which may be used either per se in the nature of an. ornament, or as a support for lamps, flower planters and other similar articles. In addition, the relatively low and substantially flat form of the instant device renders the same well adapted for use as an ornamental platter or tray.

Generally speaking, the stand in accordance with the instant invention consists of two readily separable components, namely, a supporting base and a flat platform which is removably positioned thereon. The platform is preferably in the form of an ornamental ceramic tile, while the supporting base is of a wire rod construction which creates the well known wrought iron effeet.

The primary object of the instant invention is to provide a stand of this nature wherein the structure of the base is extremely simple and, consequently, well adapted to expeditious manufacture. Some of the important features of the invention, therefore, reside in the structural arrangement of the base wherein novel means are provided for supporting the platform in position and preventing the platform from horizontal displacement.

With the above more important objects and features in view, and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts as shown in the accompanying drawings wherein correspond ing reference numerals are employed to indicate corresponding components and wherein:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention;

Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof, the platform being shown by dotted lines;

Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the subject shown in Figure 2;

Figure 4 is an end view of the subject shown in Figures 2 and 3;

Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective view, on an enlarged scale, illustrating a corner portion of the stand; and

Figure 6 is a cross-sectional detail, on an enlarged scale, showing one of the side members and an end portion of one of the cross members used in the invention.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the stand is designated generally by the reference numeral l0 and embodies in its construction a supporting base l2 and a substantially flat platform 14.

The platform 14 is preferably in the form of a ceramic tile, provided with a suitable ornamental design Ma which may be in color if so desired. However, it is to be understood that any plate-like body may be employed for use as the platform in place of the tile. vAs will be apparent, the platform is substantially rectangular in shape.

The essence of novelty of the invention resides in the structure of the base 12, the same comprising a pair of spaced parallel side members l8 which are formed from wire rod and have down- ,turned end portions !8 constituting legs. If desired, the latter may be provided at their lower ends with rubber feet 20, or the like.

A pair of cross members 22 extend between the side members [6 adjacent the upper ends of the legs l8, the cross members 22 also being formed from wire rod and each including a pair of horizontally disposed, substantially L-shaped end portions 24 and an upwardly projecting, substantially U-shaped, inverted intermediate portion 26.

The free extremities of the end portions 24 are secured by welding, or the like, to the respective side members It, more specifically, to the underside of the side members, so that the end portions 24 are disposed in a horizontal plane which underlies the side members. The intermediate portions 25 project above the platform M when the latter is installed in position on the base as will be presently explained. In this manner, the portions 26 afford convenient handles for the device as a Whole.

The angulated, L-shaped end portions 24 of the cross members 22 supportably engage the underside of the corner portions of the platform [4, while the side members is are disposed at the side edges of the platform to prevent the platform from being displaced in a lateral, horizontal direction. Simultaneously, the intermediate portions 25 of the cross members 22 are disposed at the end edges of the platform and prevent the latter from being displaced in an end-wise horizontal direction.

Thus, the side members It coact with the portions 26 in sustaining the platform against horizontal displacement, while removal of the platform in an upward direction will be facilitated, so that the platform may be readily separated from the base, when so desired. It is to be also noted that the portions 26 perform a double function, namely, that of preventing displacement of the platform and affording convenient handles, as already explained.

Although in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, various modifications may be resorted to, such as may lie within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

What is claimed as new is:

1. An ornamental stand comprising in combination a supporting base and a substantially rectangular platform positioned thereon, said base consisting of a pair of spaced parallel side members having downturned end portions affording legs, and a pair of cross members extending between said side members adjacent the upper ends of said legs, each of said cross members including a pair of horizontally disposed end portions which underlie and are secured to the respective side members and an upwardly projecting intermediate portion which is offset outwardly from said horizontally disposed end portions, the horizontally disposed end portions of said cross members supportably engaging the underside of said platform, said upwardly projecting intermediate portions being disposed at the end edges of said platform, and said side members being disposed at the side edges of the platform, whereby to prevent horizontal displacement of the platform relative to said base.

2. An ornamental stand comprising in combination a supporting base and a substantially rectangular platform positioned removably thereon, said base consisting of a pair of spaced parallel side members having downturned end portions affording legs, and a pair of cross members extending between said side members adjacent the upper ends of said legs, each of said cross members including a pair of substantially L-shaped horizontally disposed end portions which underlie and are secured to the respective side members and an inverted U-shaped upwardly projecting intermediate portion which is offset outwardly from said horizontally disposed end portions, the horizontally disposed end portions of said cross members supportably engaging the underside of the corner portions of said platform, said intermediate portions being disposed at the end edges of said platform and projecting above the latter to afford a pair of handles, said side members being disposed at the side edges of the platform and coacting with said intermediate portions to prevent horizontal displacement of the platform relative to said base.
