cr'wcIFIx HOLDER Filed April 2, 1945 John W. Blame Patented Apr. 26, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CRUCIFIX HOLDER John W. Blume, Hammond, Ind.
Application April 2, 1945, Serial No. 586,249
2 Claims.
This invention relates to religious symbols and more particularly a crucifix holder.
The primary object of this invention resides in the provision of a crucifix holder adapted to be removably disposed on the curved tops of caskets so as to prevent a crucifix resting thereon from tilting and slipping off the casket.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a crucifix holder having its bottom surface coinciding with the curvature of the top of a casket.
A further object of this invention resides in the provision of the particularly constructed top of the crucifix holder.
A still further object of this invention resides in the combination of the crucifix holder and crucifix.
With these and other objects in view this invention resides in certain novel features of construction, arrangement of elements to be hereinafter fully set forth in the specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims and, While this disclosure depicts my present conception of the invention, the right is reserved to resort to such changes in construction and arrangement of elements as fall Within the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application:
Fig. 1 is an end view of a portion of a casket showing a crucifix holder constructed in accordance with this invention disposed on the top thereof.
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the crucifix holder with a crucifix disposed thereon.
In the present illustration of this invention the letter C indicates a portion of a conventional casket having a top T provided with a curved upper surface S on which is usually disposed during burial services of certain religions a crucifix of conventional construction which is herein supported on a casket by a crucifix holder indicated by the numeral 5.
The crucifix holder 5 constituting the subject matter of this invention, consists of a base 6 of cross shape configuration having its staff provided with a channel shaped seat 7 and its bottom curved as indicated by the numeral 8, the arms 9 thereof also having a channel seat Ill therein intersecting the channel 1 with their bottom surfaces being curved as indicated by the numeral H so as to conform to the curvature 8 of the staff, the same being adapted to coincide with the curvature of the casket top so as to fit closely thereagainst and prevent slippage therefrom.
Disposed on the aforesaid seats is a removable crucifix [2, which may be ornamented to display characters appropriate to the burial ritual of different religions and fraternities.
With this invention fully set forth it is manifest that a crucifix holder is provided which will fill in the usual spaces between the arms of a crucifix extended over the curved cover of a casket and retain it on a horizontal plane so as to prevent rocking thereon and dislodgment therefrom.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A crucifix holder having the upper surfaces of its stafi and arms disposed on a substantially horizontal plane and the bottom surfaces of said staff and arms grooved laterally on an arcuate line having a center common to the curved and grooved surfaces thereof.
2. An article of manufacture in the form of a cross shaped crucifix holder having a cross shaped seat in its upper surface with the bottom surface of its staff and arms lying on a curved line.
