This inventionrelates to an ornamental cross structure, and more particularly to. adevice of an ornamental material and shaped to. fit slidably within recessed faces formed in portions of the upright and transverse arm sections of the cross.

Afurther object of the invention is the provision in a device .of this character of recessed faces containing ornamental strips and having ornamental inserts adapted. to be positioned in portions of the recessed faces formed in the upright and-transverse sections of the cross for holding the ornamental strips in position and providing additional ornamental features in the Other objects and advantages of theinvention relate to various improved details of construction and novel arrangements of the parts as'will be morefully set forth in the detailed-description to follow.

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, a cross :I may comprise lower and. upper upright sections -3 and 4 and transverse arm sections 5 and 6. The,

cross may be; formed conveniently from (wood,

metal, plastic or other suitable material, and

may be of integral construction throughout or formed from separate elements suitablyfitted and. secured together.

The ornamentation may be applied both 'to front and side faces of the upright and transverse cross sections, 01".130 :any of .them, but is shown :herein as applied only to :thezfrontfaces thereof. The upright and transverse cross sections :are provided with mecessedrfaces llll whichlare to be overlaidiby thin: ornamental strips :11. Thefornament receiving. faces 1.8 may extend longitudinally of each upright and transverse arm section -of :the cross and :the'lcrossisections are provided with. oppositely ipositioned raised lateral :shoulders d2 projecting outwardly from each 'ornament receiving face portion. Each araised lateral .shoulder isprovided with a .groove 14 formed in -the face thereof adjacent to the ornament receiving face of the (section; the grooves formed inoppositely positioned shoulders being located in opposed relation with each other to receive the opposite lateral edges l6 of a-"thin, ornamental strip H adapted to overlie the ornamental receiv.- 'ing face of the cross section.

The strips ll may be formed of any :suitable ornamental material, such as, ornamented. or ,plain surfaced metal, :plastic, ivory, pearl, cellu- :loid, paper, fabric, orother desired material and formedof suitable width to extend across the ornament receiving face of a section-of thecross, and havetheir lateral edgestfi positioned within the opposed grooves 14. These strips may he slidably inserted from one :end of each or-certain cross sections -to .fit closely against the faceportion thereof lying between the opposed :lateral shoulders carried bythat portion of the cross, and with;the strip :en ds terminating at or adjacent tothe endsof the opposed shoulders J2.

In the :embodimentof the-invention above described the ornament receiving faces of theitransverse arms 5 and 6 lie in a commonsurfaceyas do the corresponding faces ofthe upright sections-3 and-Land asingle strip .l -l :maybe-employed either 'for the faces of the transverse sections or for the faces of -,theupright sections, with separate strips H =for-the remaining sections shaped .to engage closely with the lateral edges of the continuous strip in-the assembled position of the strips.

The ornamental strip elements employed as applied to the upright and transverse arm sections of a cross may .be similar in character to provide a uniform ornamental effect for each cross section, or the ornamental strips as applied tothe upright and transverse cross :sections'may be of a different or contrasting appearance throughout all, or portionsof-their extent, to

' provide contrasting ornamental effects for di'fferent portions -or =parts 1 of the cross :sections.

In any case, it is regarded asp-referable .that

,the oppositelypositioned grooves l4.formed in opposedshoulders 42 be located throughout a common plane which is uniformly arranged with cent to th side edges of each recessed face,

so that each strip I I may be located in proximity to or bear against the recessed face portion l covered thereby when in its display position.

The ornamental strips H may be inserted slida'biy from open ends of the grooves I4 terminating adjacent to one end of a. cross section and forced inwardly throughout such sectionor v into meeting engagement with a strip located in one or the other of the cross sections positioned at right angles relative thereto.--

In that form of the invention shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the

3, 4, 5 andB are provided with recessed faces ID to receive strips II as previously described, and raised lateral shoulders.l2 are provided with opposed grooves M .to. receive lateral edges I6 of the strips H as in the form of the invention previously described. In this form of the invention inserts I8 are provided which are adapted to be fitted into the outer ends of opposed grooves [4 over the ends IQ of the strips H to further contribute to the firmly in position and holding them securely against movement in directions longitudinally of their extent.

In either form of the invention shown, the raised lateral shoulders l2 having grooves 14 formed therein, and including the recessed face areas iii of the cross sections, may constitute an integral part of each cross section or may be in the form of a separate plat secured in any suitable or desired manner to faces of the underlying cross sections. When such separate elements are employed toprovide the lateral shoulders andrecessed faces, such elements may be formed from similar material to that constituting the main or base portion of the cross sections ormay be formed from a difierent material than that forming the base portions of the cross sections, as may be desired.

What I claim is:

1. A crossstructure of the character described comprising opposite upright and transverse arm sections each provided upon one side with a longitudinally extending recessed face spaced inwardly 'frorn the plane of its lateral edges and continuous with the corresponding face of the opposite section, lateral shoulders carried by each said section extending outwardly of the recessed face and provided with opposed grooves formed in the opposite side faces thereof and located in proximity to the recessed face area,

a thin strip of ornamental material of substantially uniform width throughout its extent having the lateral edges thereof interfitting within theopposed grooves formed in -the inner faces of oppositely positioned lateral shoulders and overlying the intermediate recessed-face area, andornamental inserts'overlying the free 'ends' vide an additional ornamental effect and hold said strip securely in position relative to said cross sections.

2. A cross structure of the character described comprising opposed, upright and transverse arm sections, which are provided upon oneside with longitudinally extending recessed areas of substantially uniform width located between their corresponding lateral edges,- aligned shoulders located adjacent to the lateral edges of opposed sections on opposite sides of said recessed areas and projecting outwardly from said areas, said shoulders being provided upon the inner faces thereof with oppositely positioned grooves located adjacent to the recessed areas formed in the sections, ornamental strips each of substantially uniform width throughout slidably mounted in the opposed grooves formed in said shoulders and having their central longitudinal areas located in proximity to said recessed areas, and means positioned within opposed grooves adjacent to the free ends of said arm sections and outwardly of said strips for holdingthe outwardly located free end portions of said ornamental strips securely in position relative to the arm sections.

3. A cross structure comprising oppositely positioned upright and transverse arm sections each having front faces the opposite free edges .of which are provided with raised shoulders having opposed grooves formed therein, the shoulders of each upright and transverse arm section being located in substantial alignment with the corresponding shoulders of the opposite upright and transverse arm sections respectively to define recessed areas in the front faces of the oppositely positioned upright and transverse arm sections continuous throughout the extent of said sections, and ornamental stri each of substantially uniform width slidably mounted in the opposed grooves formed in the raised shoulders of said sections and located in proximity with the recessed areas formed therein, one of said strips extending throughout the entire lengths of opposed arm sections and transversely of the recessed area formed in the other arm sections.

4. A cross structure comprising oppositely positioned upright and transverse arm sections each having front faces the oppositefreeedges of which are-provided with raised shoulders having opposed grooves formed therein, the shoulders of each upright and transverse arm-section being located in substantial alignment with the corresponding shoulders of the opposite upright and transverse arm sections respectively to defin recessed areas in the front faces of the oppositely'positioned upright and transverse arm sections continuous throughout the extent of said sections, ornamental strips each of substantially uniform width slidably mounted in with the recessed areas formed therein, one'of the' free ends" of the ornamental strip to pro- I said strips 1 extending throughout the entire lengths of opposed arm sections and transversely of the recessedarea formed in the other arm sections, and means engaging certain-of said strip-ends adjacent to the free ends of the arm sections and secured to the corresponding free ends of the arm sectionsto retain said strips in'position relative to said arm sections. it
