Martin and Otto L. Walter, as trustees of Beta Trust, Lake Worth, Fla. Original application April 30, 1952, Serial No.
285,098. Divided 24, 1954, Serial N 4 Claims.
This application is a divisional application divided out of my co-pending patent application Ser. No. 285,098 filed on April 30, 1952, for a Lounge Chair.
The invention relates to articles of furniture and more particularly to foldable lounge chairs.
An object of the present invention is to provide a foldable lounge chair with a link system including a movable back-rest and a movable sitting structure which may be readily and conveniently brought into different positions, when the lounge chair is set up.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a lounge chair having a back-rest and a sitting structure included in a link system, which lounge chair may be readily collapsed and set up.
Another object of the invention is to improve on the construction of foldable lounge chairs as now customarily made.
Other objects and structural details of the invention will be apparent from the following description when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a foldable lounge chair according to the invention, and
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the lounge chair shown in Fig. 1, wherein, however, the lounge chair is in collapsed condition.
Referring now to Figs. 1 and 2, I I generally indicates a support made of tubular material. Said support H0 comprises a rear portion I09 and a front portion III hinged to each other at I44. The side frames of the rear portion I09 are connected with each other by a cross-bar H2. The side frames of the front portion III of the support H0 are connected with each other by a cross-bar H3 which may be integral with the side frames. On each side of the chair one end of an arm I46 is swingably mounted at I48 on a lug I50 rigidly connected with the cross-bar II3 of the front portion III of the support I I0. When the lounge chair is set up, as shown in Fig. 1, said swingable arm I46 abuts against said cross-bar I I3 whereby it is held in a fixed position.
A disk-like controlling member I26 is swingably mounted on the other end of the arm I46 at I28.
The back-rest I I4 is pivoted to the rear portion I09 of the support H0 at H6. The rear end portion of the sitting structure I I8 including the seat I20 and the leg-rest I22 as a unit is pivoted to the back-rest H4 at I24.
and this application March A controllin link I32 is pivoted at one of its ends to the controlling member I26 at I34 and at its other end to the sitting structure H8 at I36.
One end of a guiding link I38 is pivoted to the controlling member I26 at I40, the other end of said guiding link I38 is pivoted at I 42 to a bracket I47 rigidly connected with the seat portion I23 of the sitting structure H8.
The three pivotal connections I28, I34 and I40 of the controlling member I26 are spaced from each other.
When the lounge chair is set up, as shown in Fig. 1, the movable members of the lounge chair may be readily brought from the sitting position, shown in full lines, into the reclined position, shown in dash and dot lines, and vice versa.
When it is desired to collapse the foldable lounge chair, it may be gripped at the leg-rest I22, whereupon the sitting structure I I8 may be swung about the pivot I24, whereby the front portion III of the support H0 is swung about the pivot I44 while the arm I46 swings about the pivot I48 so that finally the elements of the chair assume the position shown in Fig. 2.
I have described a preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is understood that this disclosure is for the purpose of illustration, and that various omissions and changes in shape, proportion and arrangement of parts, as well as the substitution of equivalent elements for the arrangements shown and described may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
For example, stopping means may be arranged on the chair for limiting the end positions of the movable members of the chair, i. e. the sitting position and the extreme reclined position.
Furthermore, locking means could be arranged on the chair for holding the movable members of the chair in any desired position.
What I claim is:
1. A foldable lounge chair, comprising in combination: a support, said support including a rear portion and a front portion pivotally connected with each other and an arm swingably mounted on said front portion at a point spaced from the pivotal connection between said rear and front portions of the support, holding means on the front end portion of said support for cooperation with said arm so as to hold same in a fixed position when the lounge chair is set up, aback-rest pivoted to said rear portion of the support, a sitting structure including a. seat and a leg-rest rigid with each other, the rear end portion of said sitting structure being pivoted tosaid backrest, a controlling member pivotally connected with said swingable arm of the support, a controlling link pivoted at one of its ends to said controlling gnembeinat a pointspaced. from the pivotal CODIlGCtlOiT of: the. latten with. said: swing able arm, the other end of said controlling link being pivoted to the front portion of said sitting structure and a guiding link pivoted at one of its ends to said controlling member at a point'spa-ced-ilm from the pivotal connection of the latter. with.
said swingable arm, the othergendgofnsaid "guid;
ing link being pivoted to a point, of .thesitting structure intermediate the ends thereof.
2. In a. foldable lounge chair as claimed in 15 claim 1, said holding means being'in the-shape of an abutment arranged on'said front portion-t of the support for abutting engagement with said" swingable arm.
3. In a foldable lounge chair as claimed in claim 1, the pivotal connection of the controlling member with the controlling link being spaced from the pivotal connection of the controlling membenwith the, guiding link 4. Insa z.f01dable loungev chair .as claimed in claim 1, said pivotal connection between the guiding link and the sitting structure being located in the seat portion of said sitting structure.
