1 Claim. 1
My invention pertains to a snapping roll construction,
An object of my invention is to provide a pair of snapping rolls, in which the lowermost ends of the snapping rolls will turn in an opposite direction to that of the upper portions of the rolls, such lower portions turning upwardly in order to prevent injury or crushing to the corn near to the ground, and to furthermore assist in forcing the lower corn quickly upwardly to the other roll portions.
A further object of my invention is to provide an arrangement whereby the lower roll portions are turned in a properly synchronized and balanced manner to secure eificient operation thereof.
A further object of my invention is to provide the foregoing objects in a simple construction.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts of my device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the snapping roll construction, with portions thereof being taken in section,
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken along the lines 2-2 of Figure l, and on an enlarged scale, and
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary detail showing how the lower roll section is secured.
This application is a continuation in part of my copending application Serial No. 142,188, filed February 3, 1950 on a Snapping Roll Construction, now abandoned.
I have used the character ID to designate the side frames or aprons of a corn picker, the chains as well as other portions not being shown for clarity. I have further used the character H to designate the upper portions of a pair of snapping rolls which rolls are rigidly secured to the through shafts I2, thereby providing means for rotating the rolls, the driving arrangement not necessarily being shown as it is well known in the art. The shafts 12 are attached at I 3 to the upper beveled gears I4. The shafts l2 continue downwardly and are journaled at their ends l5 within the ends l6 of the further lower snapping roll portions H, which portions [1 include suitable journals at 18 for rotatably receiving the shafts l2 therein at Ill.
The shafts I2 are rotatably received within the bearing members 20 which bearing members include the small spindle shafts 2| attached thereto, and journaled on the small shafts 2| are the small pinion beveled gears 22, such gears 22 meshing with the upper gears l4 and with the further lower beveled gears 23, which lower beveled gears include the hub portions 24 which rotatably receive the shafts 12, the hub portions 24 being integrally attached by means of suitable ribs, etc. 25 to the lower roll portions [1.
The various gears M, 22, and 23 are enclosed by means of cylindrical housings 26 which housings are attached at 21 to the bracket portions 28, which bracket portions are attached at 29 to the frame members I9, the brackets 28 being also attached at 30 to the bearing members 2|].
The upper roll sections II and the lower roll sections I! are provided with slight clearances at 3! to allow relative rotation thereof with respect to the housings 26, and the housings 26 include suitable openings for the reception of the shafts l2. For supporting the lower roll sections I! on the shafts I2, I provide the openings 36 in the ends of the roll sections, and received within these openings are the heads 31 of the lengthened bolts 38, which are tightly and threadably engaged at 39 with the ends of the shafts. The bolts 38 pass through clearance openings 40, and the heads 31 bear against the hardened steel washers 4!. This arrangement will permit the sections IT to rotate while still supporting the sections.
It will now be noted from the foregoing construction that the upper roll portions I3 which rotate in the direction of the arrows 33 will provide the snapping action against the ears of corn in the usual manner, however, it will be noted that the meshing engagement of the gears I4, 22, and 23 will cause the lower snapping roll sections 1 l to rotate away from each other upwardly as indicated by the arrows 34. In this manner the lower ears are forced upwardly and are prevented from being crushed, and are also forced upwardly towards the upper roll sections in a desirable manner for the reasons as stated above, thereby preventing the objectionable features above mentioned. The character 35 designates the usual ribs on the snapping rolls.
The positioning of the three or more gears 22,
provides a smooth driving arrangement all around the roll insuring a driving engagement at all the peripheral points thereof.
It will now be seen that I have provided the various advantages mentioned in the objects of my invention with further advantages being readily apparent.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts of my invention without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my claim any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents which may be reasonably included within their scope.
I claim as my invention:
A snapping roll construction comprising a pair of snapping roll sections, means for rotating said sections toward each other as viewed from a position upwardly of the same, a further pair of lower sections normally positioned close to the ground level, means for rotating said lower sections in an opposed direction to that of the upper sections or in a direction away from each other said upper and lower sections, beveled pinion 7 gears meshing with said beveled gears to thereby provide opposite rotation between the sections, driving shafts for driving said sections attached to the upper sections, the lower sections being rotatably journaled on said shafts, brackets journalling said shafts, said brackets being positioned between said beveled gears, said brackets being attached to side frameworks adjacent to said snapping roll.
