SPECIFICATIN forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,820, dated November 21, 1882.
Application filed May 2, 188:2.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, URIAH H. BALCOM, of Downers Grove, in the county of Du Page and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windows; and I do hereby declare that the following is av full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in window frames and sash intended to be used in connection with outside blinds.
The object of the invention is to provide a construction in the frame for the admission of a full-length sash between the blinds and the divided or meeting sash, making a double windowV for winter use, and also to provide for the insertion of "a screen for summer use in place ofsaid outside sash.
The invention consists in features ot construction in the window-frame and in the sash, and in the removable or interchangeable screensash, as will be hereinafter pointed out in the claims. f
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertical transverse section ot' the frame and sash, showing the full-length closed outer. sash in position; and Fig.2is a similar section, show ing the screen in'place of the outer sash. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the outer winter-sash detached, showing the broad bottom rail, an aperture therein, and cover or slide for said aperture.` Fig. 4t is an elevation ot the screen detached, showing certain peculiar features ofcoustruction therein,by which the same is adapted for the improved frame herein described.
A A is the window-frame, B B are theoutside blinds. G C' are the meeting-sash. D is the additional sash applied between the blinds and thewindows C G,andE is a screen which in summer takes the place of theV sash D.
For the purposes of this invention the frame A is vprovided with three removable stops, a a. a2, in addition to the outside or blind stop, A. This gives three sash-grooves, F, Gr, and G', in lthe latter two of which run the meeting-sash G and C'. In the outer of these grooves, F, the sash D, of the fulllengthof theframe,is inserted from the inside after the removal of the stops aa a2 and the interior meeting-sash, C G. Said (No model.)
sash D being full length, and therefore not adapted to be raised or lowered, and being used in connection with the outside blinds, B B, provision is Iliade for reaching the blinds from the interior ofthe frame by providing said sash D with the broad bottom rail, D,in which is cut the aperture d, of sufficient size to allow the hand to be passed out through the same to reach and manipulate the blinds and their fastenings. The aperture d is covered or closed by any suitable form of slide or lid. In this case said lid consists ofthe thin gate D", pivoted at don the inner face ofthe rail D', and is therefore adapted to be raised and lowered to open and close the aperture d. Bythis means the outer sash, D, is calculated to serve its purpose of aftordingadditional protection from the weather, and at the same time it allows the blinds to be manipulated from the inside.
The screen E is not unlike ordinary screens, except that it is provided with the inner bead e at the top, securei y fastened in place throughout its length, and also with the inner beade centrally pivoted to the screen-frame near the bottom. The object ofthe beads is obviously upper or outer ofthe two meeting-sash @,whether said screen occupy the upper or lower half of the window-frame. Said beads must ot' course be ot such length as to entirely till the space between opposite beads a. rIlhe object ot' pivoting the lower bead e with the screen-frame is to enable the stops a to be inserted after said screen-sash is in place in the outer groove, for said bead, unless allowed to swing out of the way temporarily, being ofthe length required, would stand in the way of the stops a when being returned to their grooves and prevent their insertion. With theconstruction describeditis only necessary to raise the screensash to the top ot' the frame, rotate the lower bead, e', on its central pivot, insert the stop a, upper end iirst, and then return the bead e to its horizontal position. Said beadnnay be secured in this position until it is required-to remove the screen by means of one or more screws or nails. v
I am aware that it is a common thing to insert an outer continuous sash, corresponding in purpose with sash D, externally to the blindstop and in the place of lthe blinds, and I am to close the space between the screen and the IOO support a second set of meeting-sash.
also aware that it has been common to provide windows with double sets of sash or with four grooves for double sets ot' meeting-sash.
I am further aware that to a frame of ordinary constructionthat is, having one set of meeting-sash-has been added a broad, separate, and removable inside stop contrived to These are not my invention, which consists in constructing the permanent frame A, having an outer or blind stop, A',with thethree., and only three, grooves, F, G, and G', interior to said blind-stop, and with the permanent sash of the/ window itted to and located in the two inner grooves, G and G', leaving the single outer groove, F, to be occupied as above set forth. This is a construction cheaply made, adapted to the usual depth of Window-frames, and calculated to meet the requirements of both summer andsvinter by admitting either the fulllength Window-sash D or the screen-frame E without necessitatingtheremovalot'theblinds, it' present. In other Words, myinvention consists in constructing the frame A to receive the usual pair of permanent meeting-sash C and C'fartherinwaxd than has been done in frames intended for a single pair of such sash, and providing a single groove external thereto for the accommodation of said full-length outer sash and screen-frame.
I claim as my invention- I. Ilhe Window described, consisting of the frame A, provided with the blind-stop A' and the three inner sash stops, a, a', and a2, combined With the meeting-sash C and G', located in the grooves G and G', and a single sash or frame in the groove F, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with the frame provided with the three grooves F, G, and G', the blinds B, and the meetingsash C C', the outer sash, D, having the broad rail D', apertured to give passage to the hand, and provided with aclosingslide, D", substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myinvention l affix my signature in presence ot' two Witnesses.
URIAH H. BALGOM.
