This invention relates to a door holder and more particularly to a device for holding a door in its opened position.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved door holder having novel advantages over such related devicesas have heretofore been produced and which isl easy to manufacture, more edcient in. its operation and durable.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will be more clearly understood fromthe following description and from they accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a bottom view of a door and casing with my improved door holder' installed thereon.
Fig. 2 is a sectional plan View, on line2-2 of Fig. 3, showing the device embodying my present invention in latched condition.

In the embodiment which is illustrated in the drawings, the numeral ii denotes the casing of a door and 5 denotes the door which is hinged to said casing in the conventional manner.
My improved device includes a mounting plate l that is adapted to be secured to the door casing and a supporting sleeve 8 which has an upright portion S by which the said sleeve is pivotally'mounted upon the plate I and preferably secured thereto by means of a retaining washer It.
A slide bar Ii extends longitudinally through the said sleeve fi and is slidable therein. This bar has, adjacent its end portion, a stop collar I2 which abuts a` holding pin i3 that extends transversely through the said slide bar and is received in longitudinal slots ill-*Id in the forward portion of the supporting sleeve. A compression spring I5 is mounted over the end portion of the said slide bar, between the said stop collar l2 and an anchoring nut i6 which is threaded to the slide bar and is adjustable thereon for varying the tension of the said spring I5 against the stop collar.
The said supporting sleeve also carries'thereon a latch member Il which is disposed adjacent the bottom of the supporting sleeve and has up*- right side portions Ill- I8 by means of which it is pivotall'y mounted at I9 upon the upright portion 9. This latch member has, at its front end, upright inverted cam-shaped portions 2%-20 which areV disposed at the opposite sides of the forward portion of the supporting. sleeve 8; the said portions each having a cam surface 2'I at the forward edges thereof and a similar cam surface 22 at the rear edges.
The slide bar II is provided with a latching pin 23 which extends transversely therethrough, projects from the opposite sides thereof and has a roller sleeve 24 rotatable on each end thereof for engaging the cam edges ZI and 22 of the latching member. This latching pin 23 is adapted to be also received within the longitudinal slots I4.
Upon the rear portion 25 of the supporting sleeve there is slidably mounted a sleeve 26 which is urged in the direction of the latch member I1 by means of a spring 2 that is disposed between the said sleeve and an anchoring nut 28 that is threaded to the portion 25 for adjusting the tension of the said spring 21.
The rear end of the bar I I is pivotally secured to a suitable bracket by means of which the said device may be attached to the door as shown.
The operation of my improved door holder is as follows:
The latch member l'l is biased into its latching position by means of the spring 2l which forces the sleeve 2E against the latch and rocks it against they bottom of the supporting member 8. Compression of the spring 2l may be adjusted by thel nut 28 so as to regulate the force applied to the latching member.
When the device is in unlatched position, as shown in Fig. 9; the collar l2, which is under the tension of the spring I5, will abut the stop pin I3 as shown. The force exerted by the said spring I5 may be regulated by the anchoring nut I6 which is adjustable on the threaded portion of the bar II..
When the door is opened or closed normally, the bar II will simply slide through the supporting member `8v without any effect on the door. When it is desired to have the door held in opened position by my improved device, the said door is'swung towards the position shown in Fig. 1. This will cause the bar Ii to be pulled and the pin 23 to engage the cam surface 2| and thereby rock the latch member on the pivot I9, against the forceof the spring 21. The said pin will then .move into its latched position wherein it will be in engagement with the cam surface 22, as clearly shown in Fig. 5. When in this position, the pin I3 will have entered the slot I4 and the collar I2 will engage the end of the supporting member 'I so as to prevent movement of the door in either direction.
Should the door be forcibly swung so that the bar II will be pulled beyond its normal latching position, the further movement of the door will be checked by means of the compression spring I5 since the collar I2 will abut the end of the supporting member 8 and then slide on the .bar Il against the force of the said spring. During the said checking movement of the bar II, the pins I3 and 23 will move with the bar I I and in the slot I4. If an excessivelystrong push is applied to the swinging of the door, the pin I3 will engage the cam surface 2| and thereby swing the latch member I'l downwardly and apply the tension of the spring 2?, in addition to that of the spring I5, in further checking the movement of the door.
It will be readily understood that the latching tension which is applied by the latch member' I1 may be varied entirely by the adjustment of the nut 23 and that the checking resistance of the device is adjusted entirely by the nut IB so that independent adjustments of the device for latching and checking the movement of thev door may be readily made to provide smoothness and efficiency of operation.
I claim:
l. En a door-holding device, 'the combination of a. supporting member, a latch member pivotally mounted upon said supporting member, adjustable spring means carried by said supporting member for variably forcing said latch member towards iatching position, a rod slidable on said supporting member, a projection on said rod engageable with said latch member, separate spring means cooperating with said supporting member for checking movement of the rod beyond its normal latching position, and cooperating means on said latch member and rod operating against the force of the first spring member for additionally checking the movement of the rod beyond its latching position.
2. In a door-holding device, the combination of .a mounting plate, a supporting member pivotally mounted upon said mounting plate, a latch member pivotally mounted upon said supporting member, a sleeve slidable upon said supporting member and engage-able with the latch member', a spring member urging said sleeve against the latch member to force it toward latching position, a rod slidable through said supporting member, a collar slidable on said rod and abutting said supporting member, and separate spring means associated with said collar for resisting the movement of the rod beyond its latching position.

For a door which is mounted to a casing, a holding device comprising a mounting plate, a supporting member pivotally secured to said mounting plate and adapted to be mounted on the said casing by means of said mounting plate, a rod swiveliy secured to said door and slidable through said supporting member, a latch member pivotally mounted upon said supporting member, spring means carried upon said supporting member for adjust-ably forcing said latch member towards latching position, a projection on said bar engageable with said latch member, a collar slidable on said bar and engageable with the end of the supporting member, and a spring member urging said collar to resist the sliding movement of the bar beyond its latching position.
4. In a device for holding a door in opened position relatively to the casing thereof, a supporting member adapted to be mounted upon the said casing, a bar pivotally secured to the door and slidable through said supporting member, a latch member pivotally mounted upon said supporting member, a sleeve slidable upon said supporting member, a spring urging said sleeve against the latch member to force it towards latching position, a projection on said bar engageable with said latch member, a collar slid- .able on said bar and adapted to abut the end of the supporting member, a spring resisting the sliding movement of said collar to check the sliding movement of the bar when pulled beyond its normal latehing position, and cam means on said latch member engageable by a projection on the bar to cause the iirst spring member also to resist the movement of the bar beyond its normal latching position.
5. In a door-holding device, a mounting plate, a supporting member having an upright portion pivotally mounted to said mounting plate and a horizontal portion, a bar pivotally secured to the door and slidably extending through said horizontal portion, a cross-seetionally U-shaped latch member disposed at the bottom of the supporting member and extending to the opposite sides thereof and pivotally mounted to the said upright portion, latching cam means upon said latch member at opposite sides of the supporting member, the said supporting member having a longitudinal slot in the forward horizontal portion thereof, a pin extending transversely through said bar and movable into said slot and into engagement with the said cam means to secure the bar in its latching position, an abutment collar slidable on said shaft, a stop pin slidably securing the abutment collar to the bar,`
a spring surrounding said bar and resisting the sliding movement of said collar to thereby check the movement of the bar beyond its latching position, and means for adjusting the tension of said spring.
6. in a door-holding device, the combination of a mounting plate, a supporting member pivotally mounted upon said mounting plate, the said supporting member having a tubular horizontal portion, an upright portion, and horizontal slots in said horizontal portion, a latch member disposed under said supporting member and having upright side portions at opposite sides thereof, a pin extending transversely through said upright portion and side portions for pivotally securing the latch member to the supporting member, opposed cam surfaces upon said latch member, a spring carried on said supporting member and urging the latch member towards latching position, means for adjustinr the tension of said spring, a bar slidable longitudinally through the supporting member, a latching pin extending transversely through the said bar and engageable with the said cam surfaces or" the latch member for moving it against the force of the spring to permit movement of the latching pin into latching engagement with the said latch member, an abutment collar slidable on said bar and engageable with the end of the supporting member when the bar is moved into its latching position, a spring resisting the movement of said abutment collar to thereby check the movement of the bar, an anchoring pin for anchoring the abutment collar against force of the spring, the said anchoring pin being movable into the slot in the supporting member and engageable with the cam means upon the latch member for rocking the said latch member against the force of its spring to thereby further resist the checking movement of the bar when the said bar is pulled beyond its normal checking position.
