Description

April 20, 1954 J. R. COLLIER BED JACKET Filed Oct. 3l, 1952 .wak
INVENTOR .JOHN RoLusR ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 20, 1954 UNITED Nr OFFICE 1 Claim.
The invention relates to bed jackets and more particularly to a jacket designed to cover the shoulders, arms and chest of a person sitting up in bed.
It is among the objects of the invention to provide an improved bed jacket which is suitable for wear by either men or Women, and effectively covers and protects the shoulders, arms and chest of a person reclining in bed with the upper portion of the body in a raised position for reading or other activities; which opens in the back where the body is protected by the bedding on which the wearer reclines and has a continuous front for covering the chest of the wearer and long sleeves for covering the wearers arms; which has a length such that its lower portion is retained under the upper portions of the bed covers; which is comfortable to wear and provides full freedom of the Wearers arms; which is easy to put on and take olf while reclining in bed; and which is simple and durable in construction, economical to manufacture, and neat and attractive in appearance.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the following description and the appended claim in conjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevational View of a bed jacket illustrative of the invention;
Figure 2 is a back elevational View of the jacket illustrated in Figure l; and
Figure 3 is an elevational view of an end portion of one of the jacket sleeves With portions broken away to illustrate the construction of the sleeve.
With continued reference to the drawing, the bed jacket is preferably formed of a heavy fabric material providing adequate warmth for the person wearing the jacket, and includes a body portion, generally indicated at I0, the front II of which is continuous to extend across the chest of the wearer and the back of which is discontinuous providing two separated back parts I2 and I3, having convexly curved opposed edges, as indicated at Ill and I5 respectively. The bottom edge of the front part II of the jacket body portion is preferably substantially straight, as indicatedat Iii, and provided with a stitched hem Il and the top edge is provided with a rounded notch or opening I constituting the front part of the neck opening of the jacket. The curved edge of the notch I3 is continuous with the curved edges It and I5 of the back parts I2 and I3 of the jacket, so that the curved inner edge of the jacket extends around the throat of the wearer, over the shoulders and downwardly along the back. The opposed edges I4 and I5 of the back part of the jacket are preferably separated for increased comfort and facility in putting the jacket on and taking it oif, the space between these edges being overlapped by the bedding on which the wearer reclines, so that the wearers back is not exposed.
The body portion I0 is provided with sleeve openings I 9 and 2G, one in each side thereof and extending to the top portion of the jacket body, which extend over the shoulders of the wearer and long sleeves 2| and 22 are attached at their inner ends to the body portion I0, one at each side of the body portion and in surrounding relationship to the corresponding sleeve openings I9 and 2B.
At their outer ends the sleeves are hemmed to provide two or more thicknesses of material at the outer ends of the sleeves, and elastic bands, as indicated at 23 in Figure 3, encircle the sleeves near the outer ends thereof to bind the sleeves tightly about the wrists of the wearer, these elastic bands being disposed between the several layers or thicknesses of material at the hemmed, outer ends of the sleeves.
A pocket 24 is mounted on the front part of the body portion I0 of the jacket between the top and bottom edges of the front part and to one side of the center of the front part to contain small articles for the convenience of the wearer of the jacket.
The Ibody portion Iii of the jacket, in addition to being hemmed along its bottom edge, as indicated at I'I, is also hemmed along the curved edges of the back parts I2 and I3 and along the curved edge I3 of the neck opening, as indicated at 25, so that the jacket, While simple in construction, has adequate structural strength to continue in use for a long period of time.
The invention may be embodied in other specie forms without departing from the spirit or essential characteristics thereof. The present embodiment is, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claim rather than by the foregoing description, and all changes which come within the meaning and range of equivalency of the claim are, therefore, intended to be embraced therein.
What is claimed is:
A bed jacket comprising a body portion continuous in the front and discontinuous in the back thereof and provided with sleeve openings 3 4 one in each side above the bottom thereof, and References Cited in the file of this patent long sleeves attached at their inner ends to said UNITED STATES PATENTS body portion one at each end of the latter and in surrounding relationship to the corresponding Number Name Date 6 sleeve openings, the front of said body portion 5 11100451 Rosema'n July 14 193 having a, concavely curved top edge providing the 11524345 Du Bose Jan 27 1925 front portion of a, neck opening and the ends o-f 2,523636 Shennan Sept' 26 1950 said body portion at the back of the jacket each FOREIGN PATENTS halvnfg a Widthdess than one-half the Width of Number Country Y Date said -ront portion and havmg convexly curved 1o 8861,81 France une 21 1943 edges continuous With the concavely curved edge of said neck opening.
