SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,444, dated November 14, 1882.
Application filed May 18, 1881. (ModelJ To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MILTON B. MONTGOM- ERY, of the borough of Mercer, county of Mercer, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and useful Improvementin Corn-Brooms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in brooms, in which the broom and handle are made separate and apart from each other and can be easily and speedily attached, so as to form the broom and handle ready for use.
My object is, first, that while the cost of manufacture is not increased to any material extent, much will be saved to those who use the broom through being able to replace a handle which has been broken, it being apparent that most brooms of any other form of manufacture now in use are worthless when the bandle is broken.
My object is, second, to afford facilities for stowing, packing, and shipping brooms, as it will be seen that when the broom and handle are in one piece much more space will be occupied in stowing and shipping than when they are detached.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustratedin the accompanying drawing, in which- A represents the wooden part of broom-head.
B represents the beveled hole or socket in broom-head A. v
0 represents broom-handle with beveled lower end or tapered lower end to fit socket B.
D represents galvanized-iron-wire screw, attached to lower end of handle by tacks E and F.
The handle is attached to the broom by in:
serting the tapering end thereof into the tapering socket and then turning'it toward the right, and at the same time forcing it down into the socket. By this movement the wire screw will secure a hold in the socket and prevent the handle from being withdrawn. To withdraw the handle it will only be necessary to unscrew and pull the handle at the same time.
What I claim is- In a corn-broom, the combination, with a socket-piece having a tapering socket, of a tapering handle having a spiral wire attached thereto to form a screw, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
