MUCILAG E- BOTTLE STOPPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,397, dated November 14, 1882. Application filed April 8, 1882. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. BIXBY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, United States of America, have invented new and useful Improvements in MucilageBottle Stoppers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which forms part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in that class of bottle-stoppers in which are combined a cork, a handle for said cork, and means to hold a sponge or other compressible porous vehicle for liquids.

In stoppers more especially designed for bottles that are to contain such liquids as liquid blacking or mucilage, or analogous substances, where a vehiclcsuch as sponge or other absorbing and compressible materialis employed to convey the liquid from the bottle for use, it has been the custom to attach the cork to a handle to prevent the soiling of the hands.

The object of my invention is to more securely attach the cork to the handle and prevent its being wrenched off when said cork is withdrawn from the bottle; and to that end the invention consists in the construction and combination of the cork, handle, and wire, substantially as hereinafter described, and speciflcally pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawing, A represents a cork which may be cylindrical or tapering, as desired.

B is the handle, preferably made of wood, though it may be made of any of the wellknown compositions from which such articles.

are or may be molded, and may be of any convenient form for handling. The lower face of the handle B is provided with an annular recess, b, forming a seat for one end of the cork A, and within which said cork is firmly attached by means of glue, cement,or analogous adhesive substance.

0 is a wire, to one end of which is attached a sponge, D, or other porous and compressible substance used as a vehicle for conveying from a bottle and for using a fluid or semi-fluid. The other end of the wire 0 is sharpened and driven through the cork into the handle B. In practice, to afford a better hold for the wire in the handle and prevent its becoming loose and pulling out, I force the wire 0 into or through the handle on a line at an angle with the vertical axis of said handle, as shown. Thus, on pulling upon the handle, or on giving the latter the usual twist in the act of withdrawing the cork from the bottle, the wire is not so readily loosened nor can it slip out of the handle when inserted therein as above set forth, as will be readily understood.

Having now described my invention, what I claim is y In a bottle-stopper, the combination of a cork, a handle provided with a recessed seat, 1), within which one end of said cork is secured, and a sponge-supportin g wire driven centrally through the cork into or through the handle on a line at an angle to the vertical axis of said handle, substantially as and for the purpose-specified.
