STUDENT'S TABLE 2 Sheets-Sheet l ll\\\\\\\\\\\ h INVENTOR Willis QJanes Y ATTORNEYS Patented Mar. 9, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE STUDENTS TABLE Willis 0. Jones, Sr., Jeflt'ersoritown, Ky.
Application February 12, 1951, Serial No. 210,527
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a table or desk.
An object of this invention is to provide a table or desk which is designed for students or the like and which is formed with a compartment beneath the top which is open at the front.
Another object of this invention is to provide a table or desk which is of the knockdown type so as to facilitate packing and shipping of the desk.
A further object of this invention is to provide a desk which in assembled form is rigid and strong so as to be able to withstand hard usage.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claim In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a students table or desk constructed according to an embodiment of this invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view taken on the line 4--4 of Figure 8.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary view taken on the line 8-6 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates generally a flat top which has fixed to the lower side thereof front and rear members, H and I2 respectively, and opposite end members, [3 and I4. The front, rear and opposite side members are secured to the lower side of the top II] by means of fastening member in the form of screws or the like and the adj c ends of the front, rear and opposite end members are disposed in spaced relation.
A plurality of legs I6 are disposed in abutting relation to the front, rear and opposite end members and detachably secured in operative position by means of screws I! which are threaded into the inner corner of legs l6 as shown in Figure 5 and project inwardly and diagonally with respect to the adjacent corner. A diagonal brace I8 is disposed across each corner formed by the front, rear and opposite end members and includes a flange l9 at each end thereof which is engageable in a slot formed in the inner side of the front, rear and opposite end members.
The bolt or screw 11 extends through the brac- 111g member 18 and is secured in operative position by means of a mu; 2!. A pair of inner depending compartment forming walls 22 are secured to the lower side of the top IE] and are disposed in inwardly spaced parallel relation with respect to the end members l3 and Hi. The opposite ends of the Walls 22 are formed with tongues 23 which are engageable in grooves 2e formed in the inner sides of the front and rear members H and I2 respectively.
The front member or wall H is formed with a cutout 25 projecting upwardly from the lower edge thereof so as to provide an entrance to the compartment 26 which is formed between the side walls 22. A bottom wall 27 is secured by fastening means 28 to the lower edges of the walls 22 and is formed with outwardly projecting arms 29 which are secured by fastening means SE] to the front and rear walls II and I2 respectively. The forward edge of the bottom wall 21 is formed with a cutout 3| which provides a space whereby a person may be seated in front of the compartment without the lower edge of the compartment wall 21 contacting with the person. The cutouts 25 and 3i are of substantially the same width and depth to provide a shelf space and at the same time allow adequate space for the knees both vertically and horizontally.
In the assembly of the table or desk hereinbefore described, the device is initially assembled by securing the top front and rear walls and opposite end walls to the lower side of the top with the compartment walls 22 and 21 also secured in a proper position. The diagonal bracing members l8 are also secured across the open corners of the depending walls. When it is desired to set up the desk or table in operative position, each leg is inserted in an open corner with the bolt ll projecting through the brace 18. The nut 2| is then threaded on the bolt H and tightened so as to draw up the leg tightly in abutting position with respect to adjacent ends of the front, rear and opposite side walls of the table.
What is claimed is:
A desk comprising a top member, front, rear and opposite end members secured to the lower side of said top, the adjacent ends of said front, rear and end members being disposed in spaced relation, legs abutting the adjacent ends of said front, rear and end members, an inner pair of walls fixed between said front and rear members, said pair of walls being spaced inwardly from said end members, and a bottom wall fixed to the lower edges of said pair of walls and to said front and rear members, said front member hav- 3 ing a cutout between said pair of walls and extending upwardly from the lower edge thereof, said bottom wall having a cutout extending inwardly from the forward edge thereof adjacent said first-mentioned cutout and of substantially 5 WILLIS O. JONES, SR.
