G. H. HAMILTON BOX Filed April 2. 1930 Geprya H- Ifamfl 701:0
Patented June 14, 1932 warren stares PATENT OFFICE GEORGE H. HAMILTON, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN SEAT- ING COMPANY, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF JERSEY Application filed April 2,
The present invention relates to boxes, and particularly to the construction and joining together of their walls at the corners thereof; and its object is, generally, to provide such a box construction that shall be simple and economical in manufacture, shall comprise few parts readily assembled, and which, when its parts are thus assembled, shall be very stable and rigid.
This and any other and more specific objects hereinafter appearing are attained by, and the invention finds preferable embodiment in, the structure hereinafter particularly described in the body of this specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which: 4
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a box structure;
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of a corner portion thereof, shown partially in section taken on line 22 of Figure 3;
Figure 3 is a sectional view of the same taken in line 33 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line t4 of Figure 8; and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary internal view of a corner portion of the structure.
The particular box structure illustrated by this drawing as one embodiment of the invention is the box top of a desk, such as are installed in schools and the like. This structure comprises a bottom 1, end walls 2 and a side (front) wall 3, said walls being sheet metal and said bottom being a wooden board. Each end wall comprises a body portion 4, an inwardly extending curled-over top flange 5 having a downwardly extending end portion 6, and comprises also an inwardly extending flange 7 which is angularly disposed (in this particular embodiment of the invention, inclinedly from the vertical), and also a bottom flange 8 extending inwardly beneath the bottom 1 of the box.
The side (front) wall 3 comprises a body portion 9 seated in the angle 10 between the body 4: of the end wall and the flange 7 there of, and comprises also an inwardly extending curled-over top flange 11 having a keeper socket, in the form shown of a slit or kerf 12, receiving said end portion 6 of the end 1930. Serial No. 440,912.
walls flange 5 in contacting relation there with at angularly spaced points of said curled-overtop flange, in the assembled position of the parts illustrated by the drawing, this side wall 3 also comprising a bottom flange 13 extending inwardly beneath the bottom l of the box.
In assembling the parts, the side wall 3 is slid upwardly relatively to the end walls, behind the flanges 7 thereof, and along the angle 10 between said flanges and the body portions 4 of the end walls at either side edge of the side wall, the downwardly extending end portions 6 of the end walls top flanges 5 being in this movement inserted into the keeper sockets or slits 12 of the side walls top flange 11 thus providing a rigid connection between these parts. The parts are thereupon fastened together as by screws 14 extending through the bottom flanges 8, 13 of the end-walls 2 and side wall 3 as clearly seen in Figures 2 and 3.
7 It will be seen that the parts thus assembled and fastened together provide a very stable and rigid construction suitable for boxes of various kinds as well as for box tops for desks and the like; and that the curled-over flanges 5 and 11 provide a top edge of the end and side walls of the box structure which is ornamental and which prevents injury to persons handling'the same.
The invention being intended to be pointed out in the claims, is not to be limited to or by details of construction of the particular embodiment thereof illustrated by the drawing or hereinbefore described.
I claim:
1. In a box: a bottom; an end wall comprising a body, an inwardly extending top flange having a downwardly extending end portion, an inwardly extending flange angularly disposed relatively to the first-mentioned flange, and a bottom flange extending inwardly beneath said bottom; a side wall comprising a body seated in the angle between the body of the end wall and the second-mentioned flange thereof, an inwardly extending curled-over top flange having a keeper socket receiving the downwardly extending end portion of the top flange of the end wall in contacting relation therewith at angularly spaced points of the curled-over top flange, and a bottom flange extending inwardly beneath said bottom; means extending through said bottom flanges and into said bottom for fastening said parts together.
2. In a box: a bottom; an end wall comprising a body, an inwardly extending top flange having a downwardly extending end portion, and an inwardly extending flange angularly disposed relatively to the first-mentioned flange; a side wall comprising a body seated in the angle between the body of the end Wall and the second-mentioned flange thereof, an inwardly extending curled-over top flange having a keeper socket receiving the downwardly extending end portion of the top flange of the end wall in contacting relation therewith at angularly spaced points of the curled-over top flange, and a bottom flange extending inwardly beneath said bottom; means extending through the bottom flange of the side wall and into said bottom for fastening said parts together.
3. In abox a bottom; an end wall comprising a body, an inwardly extending top flange having adownwardly extending end portion, an inwardly extending flange angularly dissed relatively to the first-mentioned flange, and a bottom flange extending inwardly beneath said bottom; a side wall comprising a body seated in the angle between the body of the end wall and the second-mentioned flange thereof and an inwardly extending curled-over top flange having a keeper socket receiving the downwardly extending end portion of the top flange of the end wall in contacting relation therewith at angularly spaced points of the curled-over top flange; means extending through the bottom flange of the end wall and into said bottom for fastening said parts together.
4. In a box: a bottom; an end wall comprising a body, an inwardly extending top flange having a downwardly extending end portion, and an inwardly extending flange angularly disposed relatively to the first-mentioned flange; a side wall comprising a body seated in the angle between the body of the end wall and the second-mentioned flange thereof, and an inwardly extending curled-over top flange having a keeper socket receiving the downwardly extending end portion of the top flange of the end wall in contacting relation therewith at angularly spaced points of the curled-over top flange; means for fastening said walls and bottom together.
5. In a box an end wall comprising a body, an inwardly extending top flange having a downwardly extending end portion, and an inwardly extending flange angularly disposed relatively to the first-mentioned flange; a side wall comprising a body seated in the angle between the body of the end wall and the second-mentioned flange thereof, and an in-
