SNATCH-BLOCK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent'No. 267,153, dated November 7, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD J. F. COLEMAN, of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Snatch-Blocks; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawings, making a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

Figure 1 is a side view of my improved block. Fig. 2 is a front view.

The present invention relates to that class of snatch or tackle blocks which are provided with a hinged device arranged in proper relation to the sheave chamber or space, so that by unlocking said device and moving it aside the rope can be placed on the sheave.

The invention consists in a snatch or tackle block having two cheek-pieces of equal length, to the inner sides of which are secured straps, also made of equal length, and extending above the cheek-pieces of the block. An arm, pivoted to one of the straps and adapted to be locked to the other by a key or pin, carries a swiveled suspension-hook. By Withdrawing the key or pin the pivoted arm can be raised or moved away from the sheave-space of the block in order to permit the rope to be inserted therein. I

The letterA designates the entire snatch or tackle block, which is constructed with cheeks B B of equal length. To the inside of the cheeks B B, I attach straps O, which project above the cheeks and terminate in two pairs of ears, D D. The straps C also extend below the end piece of the block, which prevents them from springing into the mortise.

E is the hook, which swivels in a cross-bar, F, the latter being hinged at one end to the strap 0 and secured at the other by means of. a key-pin, G.

H is the sheave, and I the axis of the same.

When it is desired to insert the rope the key-pin G is removed and the hook thrown back to the position indicated by the dotted lines, Fig. 1. After the insertion of the rope the hook is brought back to its former position and secured.

The cheeks B B, being of equal length, will permit the block to be used either side up, and will not allow the rope to come in contact with any sharp edge. The parallel portions of the strap G, being much nearer together than they would be it surrounding the block, furnish bearings for the axis I, which are near enough together to ettectually prevent any bending or springing of the axis.

1f, when it is desired to insert the rope, the hook E is engaged, the block may be lifted until the same relative position shown between the block and the hook by the dotted lines, Fig. l, is obtained.

In case the block was made of iron it might be desirable to place the strap around the same, retaining, however, the other features of my invention.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The snatch-block herein described, consisting of the cheek-pieces B B, of equal length, the strap 0, extending above the same and terminating in ears D D, the cross-bar F, pro- .Vided with suspension-hook E and pivoted to the ear D, the fastening-pin G, fitted in the other ear, D, and the sheave H. journaled between the cheek-pieces, as and for the purpose herein set forth.
