UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEMUEL E. EVANS, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
BARBED FENCE-WIRE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,067, dated November 7, 1882.
Application filed April 28, 1882. (Model) To ail whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEMUEL E. EVANS, of East Orange, Essex county, New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Barbed Fence-Wire, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to that class of barbed fence-wire in which two barbs are formed from the ends of a separate short piece of wire, which piece is suitably combined with the cable.
The invention consists inthe mode of attaching the barb-piece to the cable, as hereinafter described. V
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents the barb-piece detached. Fig. 2 shows the cable with the strands opened for the reception of the barb-piece. Figs. 3 and 4 show the barbpiece attached to the cable, as seen from opposite sides.
Similar letters indicate like parts.
The barb piece shown in Fig. l is bent twice at Aand B, and its ends 0 Bare crossed at E. The cable, which may be composed of two strands, F and G, or more, as desired, has its strands opened or separated for the reception of the barb-piece, and afterward closed in their normal position when the barb-piece is secured in place.
The manner of connecting the barb-piece and cable is as follows: The two ends 0 1) of the barb-piece are inserted between the strands F G until the portion A B of the barb-piece meets the cable. The end 0 is passed under and bent around the strand or strands G, and the end-D is passed under and bent around the strand 0r strands F, bbth ends being brought out in the same plane and standing at right angles to the line of the cable. The bights A and B of the barb-piece are then each bent around the cable, as shown, thus completing the fastening of the barb-piece and tightly securing it in place.
I claim as my invention- In combination with a fence-wire cable of two or more strands, a barb piece formed of a short piece of wire, and attached to said cable by crossing the two end portions of the barb'piece and bending said end portions separately around each of two strands or two sets of strands of the cable, and also by bending two bights formed in said barb-piece around the cable, substantially as described.
