UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOWELL M. EMERY, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
APPARATUS FOR BATH PURPOSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 266,981, dated November '7, 1882.
Application filed June 30, 1882.
reference being bad to the accompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side'view of my improved medicated-vapor-bathv apparatus. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, and Fig. 3 'is a vertical sectional view.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference. This invention relates to an improved medicated-vapor-hath apparatus, the construction of which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents a suitable heating apparatus, which, as shown, may consist of an ordinary gasolinestove. In the construction of this, however, no novelty is claimed.
B is a large steam-tightvessel, placedupon the heating apparatus A. Said vessel, which may be made ofcopper or brass in any suitable plain or ornamental shape, is provided with a series of radiating pipes, G, forming brackets, each of which supports a smaller suitably-constructed vessel, D, provided with a loose perforated bottom or strainer, E, and with a removable cap or cover, F. The pipes or brackets C have stop-cocks G, by which communication between the vessels B and D may be cut off, and the vessels D are all connected with a circular pipe, H. The vessel B has a tightly-fitting screw cap or cover, I, in which is fitted a vertical pipe, J, extending nearly to the bottom of the vessel, and having at its upper end a goose-neck and faucet for drawing 011' hot water from the said vessel when desired.
K is a vessel, arranged upon the heater A, for burning sulphur, arsenic, and other chemicals. Vessel K is connected by a tube, L, having a stop-cock, M, with a tube, N, extending (No model.)
from the circular pipe H, and having a stopcock, 0.
P is a pipe connecting the pipe H with the pipe J, and having a cock, Q, for blowing off medicated vapors when desired. Vessel B is also to be provided with several test-cocks, R.
S is a steam-pipe connected to a suitable boiler or steam-generator, which is not shown in the drawings. Said pipe is connected by a pipe, T, having stop-cock U, with the pipe N.
Visthebath-box,wlrich maybeofanysuitable construction and lined with zinc. The box V has a door, WV, for the admission of the patient, whose head may protrude through an opening, X, in the top of the box. The latter has a double back, Y, zinc-lined, and into the space Z thus produced the steam-pipe S extends, as shown, so that in cold weather steam may be admitted into said space,so as to warm the box previous to being occupied by the patient. Branches AofpipeNextend through thedouble back and into the box proper, into which the medicated vapors may thus be conveyed, the pipes A being provided with cocks B for controlling the ingress of said vapors. The pipe N extends under the box and enters the front end of the latter, opening into a foot-pan, O, placed transverselyin said box. The bath-box is provided with a seat, D, having a screwstem, E, by which it is vertically adjustable in a socket or upright, F, which is secured rigidly to the floor of the box.
G is a sleeve, adjustable upon the stem E, and having an arm, H, provided with a footrest, 1, for the use of children. Another footrest, J, is adjustable upon a rod, K, secured by brackets L upon the inclined front M of the box. The door W of the box has an opening, N, through which anything which the patient may require while in the bath may be passed to him. The top of the box has an opening, 0, surrounded by a flanged sleeve or collar, P, in which is fitted a horizontal revolving disk or plate, having a handle, 1%, by which it maybe manipulated. The plate Qhas a square 95 Q and a knob or handle, X, at the upper end of said rod, which is thereby forced in an upward direction.
Y is a sleeve or collar, adjustable upon the tube U by a set-screw, Z, and having an arm or lever, A carrying at its outer end a sponge,
.13 It will be seen that by manipulatiiig the rod T from the outside of the box the tube earrying the sponge-holder may be raised or lowered, while by turning said rod by the handled disk Q, in which it moves, the sponge may be held with any desired degree of pressure against the back of the patient.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. From the generating-vessels the vapors and fumes may be admitted, as desired, into the box occupied by the patient. In the vessels D herbs and chemicals of any kind may be placed for the purpose of medicating the steam, which, when the stop-cocks G are open, passes from vessel 13 through said vessels 1) and to the circular pipe H, whence it passes through pipe N to the bath-box.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination, with the vessel B, having pipes or brackets 0, ot' the vessels D, supported upon the same, and connected with a circular discharge-pipe, as set forth.
2. The vessel B, having radiating pipes 0, provided with stop-cocks G, in combination with the vessels D, supported upon said brackets, and having perforated bottoms or strainers E and removable caps or covers F, said vessels D being connected with a dischargepipe, as set forth.
3. The combination and arrangement,as described, of the vessel B, having pipes O, vessels D, discharge-pipe H, connecting said vesaccess sels with vessel K, having pipe L, dischargepipe N, connecting the pipes'H L, steam-pipe S, connecting-pipe T, and suitable regulating and stop cocks, as set forth.
4. The box V, having transverse foot-pan O, in combination with the pipe N, being the discharge-pipe from the vapor-generators, said pipe opening into the foot-pan O, and having branches opening into the body of the box, as Set forth.
5. The combination, with the bath-box V, of the seat D, having screw-stem E, by which it is adjustable in a socket or upright, F, secured to the floor of said box, and the sleeve G, adjustable upon stem E, and having an arm, H, carrying foot-rest I, as set forth.
6. The bath-box V, having vertically-adjustable seat D,'in combination with a foot-rest adjustable upon a rod secured by brackets to the inclined front end of said box, as set forth.
7. The combination, with the bath-box having opening 0, surrounded by a flanged sleeve or collar, 1?, of the revolving disk Q, the vertically-sliding rod T, having tube U, the guide-rod V, spring \V, and a sponge-holder adjustable upon tube U, all arranged substantially as set forth.
8. The combination of the bath-box, the vertically-sliding rod T, having tube U, the guide-rod V, spring W, adjustable sleeve Y, havingarm A, carrying sponge B, and means for turning the rod T in its bearings, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LOWELL M. EMERY.
