To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LnoN CHEVALLE, citizen ofthe United States, residing at Sardis, in the Province of British Columbia, Dominion of Canada, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sterilizing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sterilizing apparatus, and the object of my invention is to provide a sterilizing apparatus which shall embody a container within which may be disposed fresh milk, and which apparatus shall be adapted to operate to sterilize such milk and to maintain all of it, or such portions of it as may not be withdrawn from said container, in an untainted sterilized condition, whereby such milk shall be preserved fresh and sweet.
I accomplish these objects by devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings where- 1n- Figure 1 is a plan view of one form o f apparatus embodying my invention;

Referring to the drawings, throughout which like reference numerals indicate like parts, 6 designates a supporting table upon which is disposed a container 7 of cylindrical form whose vertical cylindrical wall eX- tends downwardly lower than its bottom wall 8 to rest its bottom edges on the top of the table 6, as shown in Figs; 2 and 3.
The container 7 is provided with a removable 'cover 9 that is adapted tightly to close the top end thereof.
The centralportion of thebottom wall 8 ofthe container is provided with an outlet passageway 410 that is controlled by a faucet 11 whose outlet -end is provided with a removable` cap 12 which serves to protect the inner surface ofl said outletendfrom dust when the container is not in use.V
As shown only in Fig. 2, the rotatablecoek 13 of the faucet 11 is connected'with one bfurcated* endi of: a spindle^14' which; ex-
tends horizontally to and through a'bearing 15b-formed inthe lower portion of the vertical cylindrical Wall of the container 7 to extend therethrough, within which bearing 15 is rotatably disposed the other bifur` cated end of said spindle 14, rotative movements ofwhich spindle 14 may serve to open and close the oui let passageway of the faucet 11 through which liquid contents of the container 7 may bewithdrawn as required.
'A tank 16 adapted to contain air under pressure is disposed adjacent to the container 7 with the lower edge of its vertical cylindrical wallresting on the table 6.
Like the conta ner 7 the tank 16 is provided with a bottom wall, as bottom wall17, which is disposed at a considerable distance higher' than the bottoni edge of its vertical cylindrical'wall, as shownV more clearly inFig, 3, and the central-portion ofthe bottom wall17 is provided witll a passageway therethrough which is controlled by a valve 'A1'81that' is actuated by a, valve-cock 19, through which" end of a lever 24 which is pivotallym'ounted in a bracket 25% and whose other end". is articulated to the top end of' a vertically disposed connecting' rod' 2.6 which extends downwardly to a point where its lower endj is articulatedwith alhand lever27.

The faucet cock 13,' thezspindl' `14:"and'the Shaftiasare-,Saafeiaeveiyuispfpseaeinen@ thailand' lever 27 is niits uppermost posi"- tion, as shown in Fig. 4 (in which position it is normally maintained by a helical spring 30) then the needle valve 23 is tightly closed and the passageway through the faucet 12, which is controlled by the faucet cock 13, is also tightly closed; but when the hand lever 27 is swingingly moved downwardly to its lowest position then in the course of such movement, the needlevalve member 23 will first be raised to ope-n the passageway through the valve-case 22, and afterward (as the hand lever 27 passes the horizontal plane indicated by broken lines 31 in Fig. 5) the passageway through the faucet 12 will open and will be wholly opened when said hand lever 27 reaches its lowermost position indicated by dotted lines 32 in said Fig. 5.
Also when the hand lever 27 is returning to its uppermost position, in response to the force of the helical spring 30, the passageway through the faucet 12 will be wholly closed before the passageway through the valve case 22 can be closed by the needlevalve member 23.
The unner portion of the vertical cylindrical wall of the container 7 is provided with an inlet passageway 33 through a valve 34 that is controlled by a cock 35, of well known form.
4 The outer end of the valve 34 is releasably connected by a union 36 to one end of a conduit pipe 37, whose other end is connected to the outlet passageway ofthe valve-case 22, as shown more clearly in Figs. 2 and 3, thus, when the valve 34 is opened by turning the cock 35, thence compressed air may How from the interior of the tank 16 into the upper portion of the interior of the container 7 in response to a raising of the needlevalve member 23 from its seat in the valvecase 22, which needle-valve member23 will be raised in response to a downward move- .mentof the hand lever 27 as hereinbefore ex lained.

Extending through the cylindrical wall of the pipe 38, adjacent to the cap 40, is a steam ipe 41 that may be extended to a steam? oiler, not shown, 'through y:which steam pipe 41 steam may be admitted to the interior of the larger steam pipe 38.
Extending through the wall of the pipe 38 adjacent to the cap 39 is a valve-controlled outlet passageway 42 .through which steam or water mayv be permitted to escape from the interior of the pipe 38.
Disposed within the pipe 38 is a great length of smaller pipe 43 which I have shown as being disposed in the form of a helix, one of whose end portions projects outwardly through the cap 39 and the other of whose end portions projects outwardly through the can 40, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3, which latter end portion is extended to a source of highly compressed air, not shown.
That end of the pipe 43 which extends through the cap 39 is connected to one end of a T fitting 44, whose opposite end is connected with a pipe 45 that extends to and connects with the union 21 on the lower end of the valve 18, and to the side outlet of the T fitting 44 is connected a pipe 4G that is extended to and connects with a thermomel'er 47 which may indicate a temperature of the compressed air within the pipe 43.
The pipes 45 and 46, the T fitting 44 and the outwardly projecting end of the pipe 43 are provided with a lagging 48, of nonheat-conducting material, in a manner well known, and preferably the steam heater (comprising the large pipe 38 and caps 39 and 40) is also lagged with non-heatcon ducting material. 4
To 'utilize the apparatus thus illustrated and described, lthe faucet 11 and the valve 34 being closed the cover 9 is removed and such quantity of fresh milk is disposed within the container 7 as will cause its surface to be lower than the passageway 33, whereupon said cover is replaced tightly to seal said container 7 and thereupon said container 7 is heated to such temperature as will sterilize the milk and air therein contained, such process of heating being accomplished by any convenient well known means, not shown, as, for instance, by the flames of gas burners.
The valve 18 being closed steam is admitted into the large pipe 38 through the V pipe 41 under such pressure as will adequately heat the s'team pipe 43` therewithin, the passageway 42 being opened suiiiciently 'to givecirculation to said steam, then air under high pressure is admitted into the pipe 43 from a source of highly compressed air and after such compressed air within the pipe 43 is suiiciently heated thoroughly to sterilize it then the valve 18 is opened to admit such hot compressed air into the tank 16 to sterilize the air already contained therein.
Thus the tank 16 will be filled with highly compressed, sterilized air and the container 7 will contain sterilized milk and the air above its surface and within the pipe 37 will have been sterilized by other heating means, as described.
Under such conditions no unsterilized air can gain access to the interior of the container 7 during the operation of withdrawing milk from the container 7 in response to manipulations ofthe hand lever27 by which manipulations air is always admitted into the container -7 through the valve-.case 22 is closed.
Obviously, many changes may be made in the forms, dimensions and arrangement vof parts of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.

1. In a sterilizing apparatus of the class described, the combination with a container provided with an outlet faucet in its lower portion and an inlet passageway in its upper portion, of a tank containing compressed sterilized air; a valve-controlled pipe connecting the interior of said tank with said inlet passageway; and mechanism operatively disposed to connect the valvecock of the valve of said valve-controlled pipe with the valve-cock ofsaid faucet and adapted to be manually operated first to admit' said sterilized air into said container and thereafter to open the passageway through said faucet.
2. In a sterilizing apparatus of the class described, 'the combination with a container provided with an outlet faucet in its lower `portion and an inlet passageway in its upper portion, of a tank containing compressed sterilized air; a valve-controlled pipe connecting the interior of saidtank with said inlet passageway; mechanism operatively disposed to connect the valve-'cock of the valve of said valve-controlled pipe with the valve-cock of said faucet and adapted to be manually operated first to admit said sterilized air into said kcontainer and thereafter to open the passageway through said faucet; a valvecontrolled pipe one terminal of which connects with the interior of said Copies o! this patent may b e obtained for ve cents each, by addressing Washington, D.
