Description
Feb. 16, 1954 S. SMITH BY /I/Mwl Www A Trae/wens' Patented Feb. 16, 1954 ROTARY SWAGING R FORGING MACHINES samuel smith, Elmaon, England Application November 22, 1950, Serial No. 197,016
Claims priority, application Great Britain December 2, 1949 4 claims. (o1. '1s- 22) The present invention has relation to rotary swaging or forging machines adapted kfor hot forging or swaging of round and non-round bars, points, tangs, spikes and the like, more particularly those of the type in which a stationary -spindle or central die head is provided with radially displaceable die blanks which are acted upon by a rotatable flywheel or like device mounted upon the spindle or central die head with the intermediary of a plurality of circumferentially disposed rollers, and the present` invention has for its object to provide such a machine of generally increased eilciency and utility.
According to the present invention there is provided a machine of the type aforesaid incorporating a plurality of rollers certain of which are recessed the arrangement being such that certain non-recessed rollers shall operate the displaceable dies whilst other recessed rollers shall pass inoperatively over complementary dies the dies thereby being actuated alternately in pairs during the operation of the machine. Conveniently'four die blanks with associated hammer blocks may be mounted in the slots in the stationary spindle or die head in right angle relationship and twelve rollers may be used in the track alternate rollers being grooved so that two aligned dies are actuated simultaneously by non-grooved rollers whilst grooved rollers pass over the remaining two hammer blocks, these last being struck when the first mentioned dies have done their work.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into practice reference may be had to the appended explanatory drawings in which:
Figure 1 illustrates in vertical sectional elevation the pertinent part of `a rotary swaging machine constructed according to the present invention and Figure 2 is a vertical section elevation through the machine taken at right angles to the plane of Figure 1.
In a convenient embodiment of the present invention there is provided a rotary swaging or forging machine having a stationary spindle or die head a which is cross slotted at a1 (Figure 2) for the reception of dies b, hammer blocks b1 and Wedges c well known in the art. Surrounding this stationary spindle or die head a intermediately of the rollers d, d1 is a rotatable flywheel e or like device, the arrangement being such that on the rotation of the flywheel e the A rollers d operate the dies, which in turn shape the article. In the present invention the rollers d, d1 are journaled at d2 in the rotatable ywheel e or they may contact each other without end journals d2 and each alternate roller d1 is grooved, as shown, so that it operates in its track in the normal manner but misses the hammer blocks b1 whereas other alternate rollers d are plain and strike the hammer blocks b1. Twelve rollers are advantageously utilised, as illustrated, to ll or substantially fill the track so that when two plain rollers d are contacting hammer blocks b1 in alignment, grooved rollers d1 are disposed adjacent the hammer blocks at right angles thereto. These latter hammer blocks are contacted in turn by the plain rollers d and the grooved rollers come opposite the first mentioned hammer 'blocks b1; in this manner cross alternating blows are struck by the hammer blocks. Twelve, twenty or twentyeight rollers may be used as the machine size increases, the rollers being in multiples of four.
In order to restrict the outward movement of the hammer blocks b1 so that they do not foul the non-striker rolls d1 there is inserted a side key or cotter f in a suitable slot half of which is in the hammer block b1 and half in the head a, the side cotter extends from front to back of the hammer and is proportioned so that it restricts the outward throw of the hammer b1. To maintain pressure between the annular rolls and the dies there are interposed taper wedges c between the dies b and hammers b1. The wedges are controlled from the back end of the spindle by means of an adjustable tubular carrier c1 or alternatively may be pedal operated when used to obtain a steep reduction such as forging the tang on a flat le. In this class of Work it is an important feature of this invention that the pressure wedges would be applied only to the pair of dies which make the steep reduction on the tang. The spindle of the machine is hollow and provision may be made to introduce a blast of air from a motor driven blower or centrifugal fan mounted at the rear of the machine in order to expel scale from the machine.
In order to minimize the amount of scale likely to enter the working parts there may be extended the front end of the dies beyond the die retaining plate so that the first impact of the dies on the Work breaks the scale which falls clear of the Working parts.
I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, in combination, a stationary tubular spindle serving as an axle, said spindle having a plurality of transverse slots, a swaging die, a hammer and an adjusting wedge slidably mounted in each of said slots, a roller raceway surrounding the spindle and extending axially beyond each side of the transverse slots, a plurality of rollers having cy lindrical portions rolling on the raceway, alternate ones of said rollers being spool shaped and the remaining rollers being straight cylinders, a second v`racen/ay L surrounding and g journaled 'on said plurality of rollers, a flywheel surrounding and carried on the second raceway, said swaging hammers having end portions protruding int,0., the path of the straight cylindrical rollers.wh1: by all of said rollers serve to journal the flywlkieel and the straight rollers only cooperate with the swaging hammers.
