UNITED STATES FATE T UFFrcn,
ROBERT MILBY, OF MORALES, TEXAS.
Wl RE-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 266,864, dated October 31, 1882.
Application filed July 11, 1882.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT MILBY, of Morales, in the county of Jackson and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vire- Stretchers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same, illustrating its use.
'The object of this invention is to facilitate the stretching of the wires of wire fences.
A are the two sidebars, which are bent edgewise at an obtuse angle at or near their centers. The bars A, near the salient angle, are connected by a bolt, B, and at their rearends, near theedge in which is formed the re-entrant angle, by a bolt, 0. The bolt 0 (or both bolts) is provided with a hand nut, D, for convenience in applying and removing it. To the forward ends of the bars A is pivoted a roller or shaft, E, to one of the pivots of which is attached a lever or crank handle, F, for convenience in turning it.
To the other pivot of the (N0 model.)
roller E is attached a ratchet wheel, G, with the teeth of which engages a pawl, H, secured to the bar A.
In using the instrument the rear bolt, 0, is detached and the rear ends of the bars A are placed upon the opposite sides of a post, I, through which or across the side of which the wire J passes. The wire J is then secured to the roller E, and the roller E is turned by means ot'the handle F, winding the wire J upon the said roller and drawing the said wire to any desiredtau ness. When the wire has been drawn sufficiently taut it is held by the ratchet- Wheel Gr and pawl H until the said wire is secured by a staple or other suitable means.
Having thus descl ibed inyinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of two obtuse-angled bars, A A, connected at one end by a detachable rod, 0, provided with the straining devices at the other end, and having the vertices of the angles connected by a rod, B, as shown and described.
ROBERT MILBY. \Vitnesses JAS. I-l. TUCKER, N. W. KEITH.
