Description

(No Model.)
J. H. LYNCH.
BREAD CUTTER.
No. 266,851. Patented Oct. 31, 1882..
FIE I FIE IE- Jain ML 4% i 4 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. LYNCH, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
BREAD-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 266,851, dated October 31, 1882,
Application filed September 8, 1882.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN H. LYNCH, of the city of Baltimore, and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Bread-Outters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in applying to the frame of a bread-cutter a hinged wire-work guard to protect the hand of the person using the device in the bread-cutting operation.
In the description of my invention which follows reference is made to the accompanying drawings, forminga parthereof, andin which- Figure I. is a rear view of theimproved breadcutter, showing the hinged wire-work guard in an elevated 0r upturned position. Fig. II is a transverse section of the bread-cutter, illustrating the use of the wire guard.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in both views.
A is the frame of the machine, which is of ordinary construction, and B the sliding knife. 0 is the wire-work guard, hinged at a, and provided with springs b, arranged to retain the guard O, when the same is not in use, in an upturned position, as shown in Fig.1. \Vhen the guard is in this position the loaf may be i (No model.)
readily introduced and fed by hand to the knife until the loaf is so reduced in thickness as to render it dangerous to feed it further by hand Without protection. The guard is then turned down, as shown in Fig. II, which effectually protects the hand of the operator.
It will be seen that the wire-work guard 0 does not obstruct the view of the leaf from the rear side of the machine in the cutting operation, and owing to its rough surface it is better adapted to force forward the loaf without causing the same to slip than if a plain board were used.
I claim as my invention 1. In combination with the frame A and the sliding knife B, the hinged wire-work guard O, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The wire-work guard G, hinged to the frame A, and provided with springs b to retain it in an upturned position when not in use, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
JO HN H. LYNCH.
