BENDING BRAKE ATTACHMENT FOR VISE JAWS Filed April 28. 195o 2 sheets-sheet a @Mimi vPatented Jan. 26, 1954 BENDING BRAKE ATTACHMENT FOR VISE JAWS Peter Kilham, Plainville, Mass. Application April 28, 1950, Serial No. 158,775
2 Claims.
My invention relates to an improvement in bending brakes. One purpose is to provide a bending brake of simple, efficient structure.
Another purpose is to provide a bending brake which may be applied readily to or used with a bench vise.
Another purpose is to provide such a brake which may be removably applied to a bench vise or the like.
Another purpose is to provide an easily demountable bending brake which .may be transported readily and which may be efficiently used on any work bench.
Other purposes will appear from time to time in the course of the specification and claims.
I illustrate my invention more or less dicgrammatically in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure l is a plan view;
Figure 2 is a side elevation;
Figure 3 is a section at the line 3--3 on Figure 2, on an enlarged scale; and
Figure 4 is a section at the line 4*4 on Figure 1, showing the parts in a different position.
Like parts are indicated by like symbols throughout the specification and drawings.
Referring to the drawings, I indicates any suitable supporting surface, such as the top member of a work bench or the like. 2 generally indicates a vise base shown, for example, as secured to the bench I by any suitable screws 3. 4 indicates the normally fixed member of the vise to which is opposed the movable member 5, shown as integral with or secured to the guiding bar 6 which passes through the fixed member 4. 'I is any suitable actuating screw with its actuating head 8, through which passes the manual slide rod 9 with its movement-limiting ends or knobs I0.
It will be observed that the vise members 4 and have opposable, generally parallel gripping surfaces 4a and 5a.
So far, I have described a conventional vise, it being understood that my invention is not limited to any particular vise structure, but may be applied to a variety of structures in which opposed clamping members may be moved toward and away from each other.
I2 indicates a bending brake base or member shown as including a front plate or portion I3, a top plate or portion i4, and side or end portions I5. The brake base is shown as being so formed as to t over and conform to the upper surface of the member 4, while its portion I3 abuts against the front surface 4a of the fixed vise member 4.
When the brake base is dropped into the position in which it is shown in Figures 3 and 4 it may be locked, for example, by tightening the screws I8 in the threaded apertures ia of the end members I5. The result is to lock the parts firmly in position, particularly in view of the fact that the member I4 of the brake base conforms to the downwardly curved shoulder to the rear of the vise member 4. When the sharp points of the screws I8 enter the opposite sides of the vise member 4, the brake base is positively locked it is shown in the drawings.
Pivoted to the ends of the brake base, as by the headed screws 20, is a yoke, generally indicated at 2 i, and having parallel outer end members 22 connected by inclined members 23 which converge upon an enlargement 24, carrying a sleeve 25 into which any suitable brake operating handle 25 may be removably inserted. The yoke may be pivoted upon the cylindrical heads or enlargements 20a of the screws 2B, which are received in appropriately formed bearing apertures 22a.
The side members 22 of the yoke are angleshaped, as shown, for example, in Figures 2 and 4. At the angle I provide a connecting bearing bar 30 about which rides a roller 3|. The ends of the bar 30 pass through apertures 32 in the end members 22 of the yoke. They may be circumferentially channeled, or otherwise suitably formed, to receive locking members, such as the split rings 33. The roller 3I is free to rotate on the bar 3D, and is confined between the end members 22. It will be understood that when the parts are secured together, as shown in the drawings, a rotation of the yoke about the centers formed by the bearing members 20a., moves the roller 3| across the gap between the vise members, when they are in the open position of Figure 2. Similarly, clockwise movement of the yoke will move the roller 3| against any piece of material, such as sheet material, which is gripped between the movable vise member 5 and the front surface of the yoke base. Whereas, in Figure 4, I illustrate a piece of sheet metal 50 being bent to the right, referring to the position of the parts shown in that figure, I may equally readily bend the metal to the left by positioning the yoke initially in the position in which it is shown in Figure 4, and then inserting a piece of sheet metal into the space between the yoke Ybase member I2 and the movable vise member 5. It will be understood, also, that in situations where there is an advantage of having the vise member 5 terminate at the plane or elevation of the yoke thereby in the working position in which trative or diagrammatic, rather than as limiting.
me to my precise Showing.
The use and operation of the invention are as follows:
I illustrate a simple bending brake, structure which may, for example, be removably applied to a work bench vise. It will be understood that it may also be used on a permanent base, as a light bending brake. The user has the optionof employing the vise itself to grip the articles being bent, or of leaving sufcient clearance to position or drop the sheet members into'the open space between the relatively movable vise members.
In order to bend a piece of sheet metal wider than the width of the vise member 5a thin angular member 5i', of suficient length,v and as shown in dotted lines in Figures 1 and2, may be used for the holding or bending edge.
I claim: f
l. In a demountable bending brake structure, a brake base having a front portion formed to engage and conform to the front surface of a vise member, a top portion adapted to engage and conform to the upper surface of the vise member, end portions spaced laterally from the ends of said vise member, locking Velements adapted to extend between said end portions and the end surfaces of the vise membena yoke pivoted on said brake base for rotation'about a center positioned substantially below'the top ofthe vise member and at a greater distance below said top member than said locking elements, and a transverse material engaging member on said yoke movable, in response Vto rotation of said yoke, through a pathextending abovev and across the 4 gripping face of said front portion and the adjacent gripping face of a relatively movable second vise member.
2. In a demountable bending brake structure, a brake base having a front portion formed to engage and conform to the front surface f a vise member, a top portion adapted to engage and conform to the upper surface of the vise member, end portions spaced laterally from the ends of said vise member, locking elements adapted to extend between said end portions and the end surfaceseof thefvise member, a yoke pivoted on said brake base for rotation about a center positioned substantally below the top of the vise member and at a greater distance below said top member thansaid=locking elements, and a transverse material engaging member on said yoke movable,l in response to rotation of said yoke, through a path extending above and across the gripping face of said front portion'and the adjacent gripping face ofa relatively movable second vise member, the yoke having angular ois'ets, said material engaging member being rotatably mounted between angular offsets whereby, when said yoke is in a generally horizontal position, the material engaging" member is" positioned' 'forwardly at the front wall of the brake base. l
