Description

T. MEIKLE. MACHINES FOR BENDIN'G FROG-PLATES FOR FLOWS.
No. 195,627, Patented Sept.25,1877.
N PETERS, FHOTO-LFHOGRAPNER, WIIHINGTON D C UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS MEIKLE, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR BENDING FROG-PLATES FOR PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent Noll95,627, dated September 25, 1877; application filed July 12, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS MEIKLE, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bending-Machines for Frog-Plates, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to manufacture frog-plates for plows from wrought-iron or steel by bending them into the proper form, instead of casting them, as is usually the custom.
In the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
The same letters are employed in all the figures in the indication of identical parts.
A is a stationary former, being cut in the required shape. B is a die, cut so as to fit the former. It is attached to a sliding platform, B, the whole being operated by means of the eccentric (3, which turns in the bearings D D, attached to side pieces on the stationary frame E. Instead of an eccentric, toggle-joints, levers, or any other suitable device may be employed. On each side of the stationary former A grooved cams F F are fastened, in which the axles of a roller, G,
are worked by means of the oscillating levers H H, which are pivoted to the stationary frame E.
The operation is conducted as follows: A piece of metal being placed on edge between the die B and former A, the die is forced up, and, the two blocks binding against the piece of metal, will bend it into the required form. After this operation is completed the levers H H are then brought down, and the roller G is made to pass over the top of the former, bending the metal plate, making it conform to the shape of the exterior surface of the former.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In a bending-machine. the combination of the former A, movable die B attached to the sliding frame B, slide plate F, oscillating levers H H, and roller G, for shaping the frogplate by their successive operations, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS MEIKLE.
