Jan. 6, 1931. o. KENT MACHINE FOR BENDING TROUSER HOOKS Filed June 1, 1928 Patented Jan. ,5, 1931 ownn KENT, or'nownnns GROVE; rumors; nssrenon To ammonia nosovsan, or
CHICAGO,- immorsrjn w. r. noeovsny lippiica'tio l filed .l'une l,
Heretofore it has been common practice to make hooks for trousers, or the like, and then fasten the completed hook to the goodsby sewing but as set forth in my application for Method and apparatus for applying trouser hooks, filed March 26, 1928, :Serial No,
264,727, I provide a. new system of applying hooks whereby the hook blanks are made and fastened to the goods and then the blank is bent to form the hook. 'The present invention relates particularly to means for, bending or completing such hook members. i
he objects of this invention are to provide a simple and effective mechanism for bending trouser hooks and the like; to provide means whereby ablank or partially formed hook is bent to complete the hook after such blank has been secured in position on the Figure- 4 is a similar View showing the completion'of the bending;
.Figure 5 is a detail planview of the bending devices; and
Figure 6 is a. view showing the hook blank in dotted lines applied to the garment and the completed hook portion in full lines.
In the particular form of the machine as shown in these drawings, the frame 7 is pro vided with'a support or anvil'S upon which the garment 9 with the hook blank 10 is supported, as shown in Figures 3 and 4. It is understood that the blank or partially formed hook is secured in position in the trouser corner or garment by sewing or otherwise preparatory to bending. A foot or clamping member 11 coacts with the anvil or clamping member 8 for holding the gar- The foot ment and hook blank in position. 11 has a forwardly extending projection or forming member 12 over which theproject- COPA BTNERSHIP CONSZSTING OF HENRY J. BRIEDE AND MACHINE. ma nnivnme i'r nonsER HOOKS ing end of the'blank is bent to form the-hook as shown in Figure 41. The foot 11 is carried on arod-or shaft'l which passesthrough A lever 18 is pivoted at 19 toan arm 20 on the frame 7 and is suitably attached to the rod13 as by means of a pin 21 for reciprocating the rod. The lever 18 may beactuated in any convenient manner, asby means of a rod 22 and pedal (not shown). y g r lguide-23is'arranged at the front of the anvil 8 and is secured theretoinany convenient manner, as by-me'ans of a screw 24 which passes through a slot 25' in a flange 26 at the. lower port on of the guide. An adjusting screw 27 is also provided for accurately a,d Justmg the positionof the guide in order to;
insurethe bending of the hook at theproper point. The guide 23 is shaped to conform with the outer port-ion of a hole 28 in the blank 10 so that when the blank is fitted thereover'it will be held accurately in position.
A yoke 29' is pivoted at 30 to the anvil 8 and is adapted to swing in a vertical plane.
This yoke has two inwardly projecting -rol lers 31 which are pivoted to the sides thereof,
'asshown particularly in Figures 3 and 5,and
which'are adapted to engage with the outer end ofthe blankto complete the bending operation. These rollers preferably approach the guide 23 as'closely as possible in order to engage with a substantialportion of the hook blank. The yoke 29 has a bent arm or rod 32 which is provided with a handle 33 which isa-rrangedsothat the yokemay be easily swung by the operator and the handle will not interfere with the garment or operating parts. y WVhen the hook is to be completed, the operator places the trouser or garment, as indicated at 9,011 the anvil with the hook blank? lOfitting over the body-23 and engagingclosely'therewith.- I The, foot 11 is then" brought 'downand held securely in position on'the garments during the forming operation. While the garment is thus clampedsecurely inposition, thehandle' 33 isswungto raise the yoke, and the rollers 31 engage the projectingend of the blank 10. As the rollers move upwardly and inwardly they bend the blank overthe foot 12, as shown in Figure 4, andjpressit closely against the foot which is preferably slightly curved or shaped to give the outer-portion the desired form.
As soon as the hook is completed the yoke swung downwardly to its original position, the foot raised and the garment removed therefrom. This operation maybe rapidly done even by unskilled labor and the completed hooks will be uniformlypositioned f with respect to the goods to givethe' b'est'results. I
While the hooks'referred to herein are intended particularly for trousers, it isobvious that they may be applied to other garments and my improved machine utilized for formand suitably shaped ing'the same. Changesmay be made in the designer arrangement of the parts in order adapted to lit in a hole in the hook blank, a forming member pivoted to the support, bending and forming .rolls'carried'by said forming member," and means, for swinging thefor'm n' member,- the arrangement being such that W ien the forming member is swung upwardly the rollers will engage with the projecting p'orti'onof the blank and bend and press the same against said clam-ping and forming member. 7 r
4. In a device as per claim 3, a guide vformedto fit a; holerin the hook blank and means for adjustably supporting said guide.
" r OWEN KENT.
, toadapt the machine for different sizes or' I forms of hooks for different conditions therefore I do not wish to be limited to the exact arrangement herein shown and described, except asspecified in claims, in which I claim:
1. In a machine for bending garment v hooks having holes therein, the combination of a frame having ananvil for supporting a hook blank, a presser foot coac'ting with the anvil for holdingthe blank, means for actuating said presser foot, a guide adjacent to the anvil for engagement with the holes in the hookblank, and a movable formingmember adapted to engage with the blank for bending the same over a portion of the Presser foot.
the following 2. A machine for bending trouserhooks,
comprising a frame having a clamping member adapted to support a portion of the trousers with ahook blank secured thereto, a presser foot adapted toengage ,With the garment and blank for clamping the same on the clamping member, means for actuating 1 said presser foot, an adjustable guide adjacent to the clampingmember for guiding the blanks, a yoke pivoted to theclamping mem- 1 her, rollers on said yoke for engagement with member carried by the shaft and adapted to coact wlth the support for holding the trouser corner with a hook blank secured therein, a'guid'e mounted on the support and
