DOOR HOLDER Filed July 23, 1959 Rufus 7. Han! 1N VEN TOR.

ire Stat This invention relates to new and useful improvements in door holders for use particularly although not necessarily, by carpenters and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, novel means for firmly securing a door in a desired position in a frame while scribing said door for dressing the edges thereof prepartory to hanging the same.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a holder of the aforementioned character which may readily may be used on doors and frames of various sizes or dimensions.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a door holder of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, com pact, of light weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a front elevational view, showing a plurality of holders embodying the present invention in use;
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged view in vertical section, taken substantially on the line 2-2 of FIGURE 1; and
FIGURE 3 is an elevational view, taken at right angles to FIGURE 2.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that reference character 4 designates a convention l door to be scribed for dressing preparatory to hanging said door in a frame 5.
The embodiment of the present invention which has been i lustra ed comp ises a bracket of suitabe met l which is desi n ted generally b reference character 6. The bracket 6 includes a generally U-shaped member or b r 7 comprising a flat or straight bight portion 8, a lower or inner le 9 and an upper or outer leg 10.
Fixed longitudinally as by welding on the leg it) and proiecting be ond the bight portion 8 of the bar 7 is a metallic arm 11. A door engaging screw 12 is threadedly mounted for adjustment in the outer or free end portion of the arm 11. A lock nut 14 secures the screw 12 in adjusted positi n.
The le s 9 and it! of the bar 7 and the inner end portion of the arm 11 have formed therein aligned openings 13. A spike 15 is slidably mounted in the openin s 13. At o e end the spike 1L5 terminates in a point 16 for penetr ti g the frame 5. A coil spring 17 encircles the spike 15 and has one end en ved with the le 9 of the b r 7. The other end of the spring 17 is en aged with a stop pin 18 on the spike 15. The spring 17 yieldingly urges the p in ed end 16 of the spike 15 into the door frame 5. The stop pin 18 is insertable selectively in spaced openings 19 which are provided therefor in the spike 15 for adjusting said spike on the bracket 6. On its other end the spike 15 is provided with a handle 29 for retracting said spike against the tension of the spring 17.
It is thought that the use of the invention will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, as many of the holders as desired may be used at spaced points on the vertical edges and the upper end of the door 4 for engagement with the jambs 21 and the header 22 of the frame 5. The screw 12 is adjusted as desired in the arm 11 and secured by the lock nut 14-. The screw 12 Patented J nn. 23, 1962 is then driven with a hammer or other tool into an edge of the door for mounting the bracket 6 thereon with the bight portion 8 of the bar 7 abutting the adjacent face of said door, as shown to advantage in FIGURE 2 of the drawing. The spike 15 is then driven in the frame 5 for firmly holding the door 4 against movement relative to said frame in an obvious manner. Holes 23 are provided in the upper or outer end portion of the spike 15 in either of which holes a stop pin may be inserted for engagement with the leg It} for securing said spike in either of two retracted positions against the tension of the spring 17 while the door, with the holder thereon, is being positioned in the frame 5.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be restorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A holder for securing a door in a frame, said holder comprising: a bracket for mounting on a marginal portion of the door, said bracket comprising a generally Ushaped bar including a flat bight portion for abutting a face of the door and further including a pair of parallel legs having aligned openings therein, an arm fixed longitudinally on one of said legs and projecting beyond said bight portion of the bar, a screw threadedly mounted for adjustment on the free end portion of said arm and adapted to penetrate an edge of the door for mounting the bracket thereon, a spike slidably mounted in the openinns p ral el with said door face and including a point on one end adapted to penetrate the frame for retaining the door a ainst movement relatively thereto, a coil spring encirclin the spike and operatively connected thereto for yielding v urging the same toward an operative position. a handle on the other end of the spike for manually r tract nr he same ag inst the tension of said spring, said spike having spaced openin s therein adjacent one end of the spring, and a pin selectively insertable in the openinns and en aged with the spring for adjusting the tension thereof. said spike further having spaced openings in an end ortion thereof adapted to receive a stop pin for releasab y securing the spike in one of a plurality of retracted positions.
2. A ho der for securing a door in position in a door frame preparatory to scribing the marginal portions of the door on one side thereof, said holder comprising a generally U-shaped bracket for mounting on the other side of the door adjacent one edge thereof, means engageable with said one edge of the door for securing the bracket in position on the door, a spike slidably mounted on the bracket, and a spring operatively connected to the spike for driving same into the frame for anchoring the holder therein, said means comprising an arm fixed longitudinally on one of the legs of the U-shaped bracket and extending from the bight portion thereof in a direction opposite to that of the legs of said bracket, and a fastener on said arm adapted to be driven into said one edge of the door.
