SHOCK PAD FOR GUN BUTTS Filed Sept. 50, 1950 I INVENTOR. 1 67.45:??? 6. VVf/J.
Patented Jan. 26, 1954 UNITED 1 Claim. 1
The present invention relates "to improvements in gun stocks and primarily means for providing a storage cavity in the butt end of the gun stock.
It has for one of its objects that of providing a readily accessible storage space in the butt end of the gun stock which will not interfere in any way in the mounting of the heel plate on the gun stock or the mounting of the shock absorbing cushion carried by the heel plate.
Another object of my invention is to provide a closure for a storage space in the gun stock which when closed shall be moisture proof and which will be firmly held in position against displacement in the handling of the gun.
For the purpose of disclosing the invention I have illustrated an embodiment of the invention in the drawings, and Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of so much of a gun stock as is necessary for the disclosure of my invention.
Fig. 2 is an end view of the butt end of the stock showing the closed member opened to permit access to the storage chamber.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated the gun stock In at its butt is provided with a storage cavity II which may be of any suitable size and shape and which has a butt opening. This butt opening is closed by the heel plate I2 which, of course, conforms to the shape of the gun stock and, in the structure illustrated, the heel plate I 2 has secured thereon the butt cushion 13 which may be of rubber or other soft material.
The heel plate l2 closes the butt opening of the cavity or recess II and is swingably held in position so that it may be swung to one side to permit access to the storage cavity. To this end I provide a metal plate M which conforms in shape to the gun stock and is provided with an opening coinciding with the butt opening into the storage space or cavity II. This metal plate is secured to the butt of the stock by any suitable means as by maintaining screws l5 or the like.
The plate 14 at its upper end is provided with an inwardly extending semispherical socket l6 which projects into a recess l1 formed in the butt of the gun. This socket is adapted to receive a semispherical member I 8 which surrounds a pin I 9 projecting into the recess l1 and anchored to the heel plate l2 by being headed over, as at 20, a reinforcing plate 2| that is interposed between the cushion l3 and the heel plate I 2. A coiled spring 22 biases the heel plate 12 in closed position, this spring being interposed between the inner surface of the semispherical socket l6 and a collar 23 secured on the end of the pin I9.
The lower end of the plate 14 is provided with a, latch opening 24 which faces a recess 25 in the gun butt and is adapted to receive a hooked latch 26 anchored to the reinforcing plate 2| by being headed or riveted over the plate. The engaging face 2 1 of the latch 26 is inclined in such a manner that when the latch is in hooked position it will tend to draw the heel plate I2 into sealing engagement with the plate l4.
Under normal circumstances the heel plate I2 is maintained in its latched and closed position by the combined action of the latch 26 at one end and the coiled spring 22 at the opposite end. In order to release the heel plate so that it can be swung to one side to expose the storage space in the gun butt the upper end of the heel plate is pulled, by a right line movement, away from the plate M. This displaces the ball Hi from the socket It to such an extent that the heel plate then can be moved downwardly to disengage the hooked end of the latch 28 from the wall of the opening 25. When thus released the heel plate may be then swung with the ball and pivot pin I9 as a pivot to one side.
In closing, the heel plate is swung back to position until the hook 26 is opposite the opening 24 and then again by moving the heel plate l2 slightly downwardly the hook will enter the opening 24 and due to the camming action of the ball Is in its socket l6 under the influence of the spring 22 the parts will be securely locked together.
The invention claimed is:
In a gun stock having a butt end and a storage cavity formed in said end; a mounting plate secured to said butt end and having an inwardly projecting semispherical and apertured socket formed adjacent one of its ends and a latch opening formed adjacent its other end, said butt end having an elongated recess in alignment with and for accommodation of said so second recess in GILBERT C. WEIS.
