JALOUSIE WINDOW LOUVER Filed Aug. 18, 1950 INVENTOR. day/v M 5/ /70 W Patented Jan. 26, 1954 UNITED STATE T OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in jalousie windows, and more particularly to means for removably mounting individual louvers of such windows in the frames thereof, the primary object of the invention being to provide such mounting means in the form of clips composed of two sections which are frictionally engaged in such a manner that the sections can be quickly and easily separated to enable removal of a damaged louver and can be quickly and easily reengaged to install a replacement louver, all without removing or working upon the window frame or in any way damaging or defacing the frame or subjecting the louvers, which are usually of glass, to marring or breakage.
Other important objects and advantageous features of the invention will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein merely for purposes of illustration herein, a specific embodiment is set forth in detail.
In the drawing, wherein like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary transverse vertical section taken through a jalousie window frame showing louvers mounted therein in accordance with the present invention, only one of the side members being shown;
Figure 2 is an enlarged inside elevation of one of the mounting clips;
Figure 3 is an outside elevation thereof;
Figure 4 is a top plan view of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is an outer end elevation, looking from right to left in Figure 3;
Figure 6 is an inner end elevation, looking from left to right in Figure 3; and
Figure 7 is a transverse vertical section taken on the line 7-1 of Figure 2.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 9 generally designates a jalousie window frame having the vertical side members I0, only one of which is shown, between which the glass or other similar material louvers II are horizontally disposed in vertically spaced relation in declining planes. In accordance with the present invention the opposite ends of the louvers II are secured in clips, generally designated I2, which mount the louvers on the window frame side members I0.
The clips I2 are similar but are reversed in position on the opposite ends of the louvers II. Each clip I2 comprises a bracket section A, adapted to be secured in place on the frame side member ID by means of rivets I3 or other suitable means, and a holder section B, in which the outward longitudinal edges by a web 22.
adjacent end of the louver is supportably inserted and confined.
The bracket section A comprises a plane vertical plate I4, adapted to engage the inner side of the frame member I flatwise, formed with vertically spaced holes l and It to pass the securing rivets I3. The plate It has a perpendicular rear edge I! and a forwardly declining forward edge i8, and a forwardly declining and less angulated lower right angular edge on which is a laterally inwardly projecting plane flange :9 having a free edge I9 parallel to the plate I 4. The flange I9 has the declination corresponding to the desired declination of the louver I I.
The holder section B comprises a channel form comprising upper and lower parallely spaced sidewalls or flanges and 2| respectively, spaced to snugly receive therebetween an end of the associated louver II, and connected at their The lower flange 2I is plane and unindented and its elevated end 23 terminates in downwardly or laterally inwardly spaced relation to the elevated end of the elevated flange 20. The upper end of the upper flange is has a downturned upper stop flange 24 while the depressed end of the lower flange 2| has an upturned stop flange 25, the stop flanges 24 and 25 being spaced to snugly engage the upper and lower edges, respectively, of the louver I I when inserted between the flanges 20 and 2|.
The depressed end of the upper flange 28 of the holder section B is spaced upwardly or laterally inwardly from the depressed end of the lower flange 2i and is bent upwardly and inwardly to provide a lower hook 26. At a point intermediate its elevated and depressed ends the upper flange I0 is slit transversely to define a lower transverse edge 2's in the plane of the flange 20 and the upper edge 28. A portion adjacent to the upper edge 28 is directed upwardly at right anles from the flange 20 to define a shoulder, and the shoulder 30 terminates at its upper end in a downwardly directed terminal 2! which is parallel to the flange 20 and is upwardly spaced from the flange 20 at a distance such that the flange I9 of the bracket section A can be snugly and frictionally received between the terminal 29 and the upper surface of the flange 20. The shoulder 30 is spaced upwardly from the lower hook 25 at a distance corresponding to the length of the bracket section flange I9 so that when the bracket flange i9 is engaged between the shoulder 30 and the stop hook 26 there is a minimum of lost motion of the holder section 3 in a direction lengthwise of the bracket section flange l9. The stop hook 26 is not initially in the form of a hook, but in the form of a straight piece extending upwardly from the depressed end of the flange 20, the terminal part of the piece being adapted to be bent downwardly or laterally inwardly to form the stop hook 26.
Two of the bracket sections A having been mounted in longitudinal alignment on the Window frame side members, In, and holder sections B having been slipped onto the opposite ends of a louver II, the louver is installed by passing the holder sections B upwardly under the flanges [9 of the bracket sections A and engagingtheter;
minals 29 over the elevated ends of the portions of the flanges which are below the shoulders 39. Then, with the shoulders l engaging the said elevated edges of the flanges 2B, the lower portions of the flanges 2 are brought up-agai'n'st the undersides of thesefportions of the flanges er nl l rmin so e nd por ions of the pieces are bent laterallyinwardly oyer and; downwardlympon; the depressed; ends of; the bracket flanges .19 and pigeferably sgueezedtight to securely grip the flanges] 9:,and formthe lower hooks. v v g In the event that it be desired to removethe louver H, it is necessary, only to bend up, the terminal or free endportion of the hook 25., This frees the holder sections 13 to be removed from theflanges I9 0 f the bracket sections A by a removal of the 1ou ve 3s described above. It is to be observed thatin; installing and removing a, louver no manipulation of, o mutilation of the bracket sections A is; involved, and that, in the event that the; hook, 25 05, any holder section should break; oifinbeingbent in installing or removing av louver, the-pffending holder section B can be readily removed and replacedrelativeto e ve t ut in: an lw vi volvin the bracket sections A on; the. window frame side members [0,
