WASHING-MACHINE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 266,696, dated October 31, 1882,

Application filed June 1, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, MATHEW J. JONES, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Martinsburg. in the county of Berkeley and State of \Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vashing-\Iacl1ines, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings. 4

My invention has relation to washing-machines; and the object of the invention is to provide a machine for family use that shall be simple and cheap in construction, effectual in operation, and easily operated; and to that end my invention consists in the construction of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation, and Fig. 2 a top plan view with the rollerframe thrown back.

A is the tub or box, provided with legs a a. In the washing-box A is a semicircular frame, B, hinged to the sides by the pivots b, and this frame is held together by the crossbars b.

O G are a series of rollers, which form the rubbingbed of the machine, and are arranged in a semicircular form in the frame B.

D is a rectangular frame, secured to the box A on its outside by the same pivots, b, which secure the roller-frame B. In the frame D is mounted a roller, E, provided with a series of rigid round bars, 6. This roller E is operated by the-crank-handle e, and the roller and frame are raised or lowered by .the frame-handle F.

(Modeh) In operating the machine the roller-frame D is raised and the clothes placed in the box; or they may be secured on the outside of the roller E, and by taking hold of the frame-handle F while the right operates the crank-handle e a greater or less pressure may be brought to bear on the clothes between the roller and the bed, thus effectually and rapidly washing the clothes.

If necessary, the roller E may be oscillated instead of rotated, when it is necessary to wash a particular portion of a garment, without subjecting the whole to the rubbing operation, thus saving the wear and tear on those parts which do not require washing.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

In a washing machine, the semicircular frame B, provided with a series of rollers, O, in combination with the frame D, having rollers E 0, adapted to operate in close contact with the rollers C at all points, said frames B and D being hinged to the box A by a common pivot, b, whereby both frames are adapted to be conveniently swung back upon each other or detached from the tub, all combined and arranged substantially as set forth.
