SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 266,633, dated October 31, 1882.

To all whom @t may concern:

Be it known that I, CHANDLER MCWAYNE, of Colfax, in the county of Placer and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds or Cribs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in swinging beds, cribs, or cradles, the object of the same being to provide a device that will combine simplicity and economy of construction with durability and eiticiency in use; and with these ends in view my invention consists in certain details in construction and combination of parts, as will be more fully described, and-pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of my improvement, and Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.

A represents asuitable frame, consisting of four upright standards, a., and two horizontal beams, Z), the said standards and beams being connected together in their proper relative positions by suitable horizontal, transverse, and diagonal braces. The frame thus formed is of size sufticient to enable the bed, crib, or cradle to rest lengthwise the same and have a free longitudinal swinging movement therein without encountering any obstacles. The two sides of the frame A are open above the position occupied bythe bed, when the latter is placed in position, to enable the vibrating or swinging frames D D to pass freely, and each vibrating or swinging frame is so constructed as to enable the foot and head boards of the bed or crib respectively to pass through the same at each vibration or swinO. 'lhesevibrating or swinging frames D D are each composed of the transverse base-beams e, two vertical bars, f, pivoted beams g, and two diagonal braces, h, the whole being secured together in the positions shown. The pivoted beams g of the swinging frames D D are each provided on their outer extremities with the pivot-bolts h', which latter passthrough the metallicstraps or bearings i into the transverse beams band form the pivotal support for the frames D and D.

The lower transverse basebeams, c, are each provided at suitable distances apart with the metallic bearing-pieces j, which latter are secured to the said basebeams in any ordinary manner. Each bearingpiecej is provided centrally with an indentation or recess, 7o, into which the downwardlyprojecting lugs l of the crib-base E rest. This crib or bed base E is slightly longer than the crib or bed, and is provided with the side arms or extensions, m, into which the downwardlyprojecting lugs l are secured. The side arms or extensions, m, ot' the crib or bed base are curved on their under surfaces, and somewhat resemble a cradle-rocker, and when a vibrating motion is imparted to the crib the curvature of these arms always enables them to rest firmly on the metallic pieces of the beams, and always forms a sure and safe bearing therefor throughout the entire movement of the crib or bed, while the projecting lugs l firmly hold the parts together and prevent the crib or base from slipping from position. The crib-base E is provided centrally with an upwardly-projecting lug, adapted to pass centrally through the bottom ofthe crib, cradle, or bed and form the axis therefor, on which the bed, crib, or cradle is moved. It also holds the same firmly in position thereon. By this means I am enabled to place the crib, Snc., longitudinally on the base E, so as to get a lengthwise movement, or transversely, so as to get a side or lateral movement similar to that of a cradle, excepting that the crib, &c., is always retained in a horizontal position, which obviates the liability of the occupant falling out or of making him or her sick.

Instead of having the lug projecting from the base E up through the crib or bed, the construction can be reversed and answer all the necessary purposes.

By the arrangement ofthe parts above described I am enabled to take the bed and bedbase from the swinging frame, when desired, and also remove the crib or bed from the base E and place instead thereot` an ordinary mattress.

F is a suitable guideway secured to the frame A in any ordinary manner, and adapted to rest under the base-beams e when the swing- IOO ing frames D and D are in their normal position. These guideways are sufciently large to admit of the passage ofthe arms G, secured to the under side of the said base-beams. Now, when the parts are in their normal position these arms G rest in the guideways F, which in this instance are composed of bent metallic bars a, secured to the transverse brace o, and hold the swinging frames and bed or crib in position and prevent it from tilting when a person is getting into or out 'of the crib.

I have described the frame A in connection with my improvement for the sake of convenience; but I do not limit myself to the construction thereof, as my improvement can be securedrto the ceiling of a room, or toany suitable structure and answer all the necessary purposes.

My improvement is simple in construction, requires very little power to keep it in motion, and can be manufactured at a comparatively small initial cost.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The colnbination, with two swinging frames, of a bed or crib base removably secured thereto, and a bed or crib secured on the said base.

2. The combination, with two swinging fra-mes, the base-beams of which are provided with indented metallic pieces, of a bed' or crib base provided with downwardly-projecting lugs adapted to rest in said indented pieces, and a bed or crib removably secured to said crib-base.

3. The combination, with two swinging frames, the base-beams of which are provided with indented metallic pieces, of a bed or crib base having arms or extensions at the four corners thereof, the lower faces ot the said arms CHANDLER MCVVAYNE.
