J. COSTELLO.
BUTTON.
No.266,611, Patented Oct. 31, 1882.
WITNESSES INVENTF! Unire STATES JOHN COSTELLO, OF ATTLEBOROUGH,MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO VATSON 55 NEWELL, OF SAME PLACE.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 266,611, dated October 31, 1882.
Application filed September 14, 1882.' (No model.)
To all lwhom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN OosrELLo, of Attleborough, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buttons; and l do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of thc same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to means for attaching the backs ot' buttons to heads or face members composed of pearl, ivory, hard rubber, 85e.; and my improvement consists in a fasteningplate which is adapted to be secured to the post or shank ot' a button-back, and has a ribbed edge adapted to be swagcd outwardly to engage the beveled wall ot' a cavity in the button-head, and thereby hold the parts in combination, as will hereinafter appear.
Tteferring to the drawings, Figure l represents in partial section a button embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 shows the fasteningplate in perspective, a portion being cut away the better to show the ribbed edge. Fig. 3 shows said plate attached to a two-arm post.
A is the button-head,which is provided with a cavity, a., having a beveled wall, c. B is the fastening-plate, having a ribbed edge, b. O is the post, secured to the plate B; and D is the shoe, which is attached to the post in any preferred manner. Normally the diameter of the plate B is slightly less than that of the top ot' the cavity c, so that the plate can enter the cavity. The plate B is secured to the buttonhead by placing the plate in the cavity in the head and attening the rib with a proper tool or tools in a well-known manner, so that the edge of the rib will engage the wall of the cavity, as shown in Fig. 1.
Fastening-plates which are curved over their entire area have heretofore been employed; but since the diameter of the cavities in a detinite size of button-heads varies more or less, comparatively considerable curvature has to be given to such plates in order that sufticient expansion or spread may be obtained to cause them to tit cavities ot' a maximum diameter within the usual limits of variation. When such a plate is combined with a head having a cavity of a minimum diameter the plate often becomes crimped, thereby rendering it unsightly, and the post soldered to said plate is liable to become detached or its attachment to the plate be rendered insecure during the fastening operation.
My improved plate possesses advantages over one curved over its entire Iarca,in that thinner, and therefore less expensive, stock may be used, owing to the rigidity imparted to the plate by the rib. The ribbed plate will not be crimped or the attachment of the post soldered thereto be disturbed by the fastening operation, and the ribbed plate will expand to till cavities of greater variation in diameter.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the head of a button or other article having a cavity with a beveled wall, as described, of a back member provided with a fastening-plate, B, having a rib, b, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
JOHN COSTELLO.
