Description

Jan. 12, 1954 R. G. SCHMIDT PROTECTIVE GARMENT Filed June 5, 1950 INVENTOR.
B aff-47 Patented Jan. 12, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT QE'FICE PROTECTIVE GARMENT Ruth G. Schmidt, Pittsburgh, Pa. Application June 3, 1950, Serial No. 166,019
1 Claim.
This invention relates to protective garments for wear when handling infants, and it is among the objects thereof to provide a protective garment that is shaped to cover the portions of the wearer most likely to be exposed for contact with the infant.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a garment that may be readily put on and which by its shape and fastening means adjusts itself to the body of the wearer.
The invention will become more apparent from a consideration of the accompanying drawing, constituting a part hereof, in which like reference characters designate like parts, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a rear elevational view of an embodiment of the invention as worn;
Fig. 2 a front elevational view of the garment with its fastening means attached; and
Fig. 3 a rear elevational view of the garment in its attached position.
With reference to the several figures of the drawing, the garment consists of a one-piece shoulder and lapel portions, the shoulder portion being indicated by the numeral l and the lapel portions by the number 2, the shoulder portion forming a deep collar 3 at the back of the wearer as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The shoulder portions are of substantial width, extending from the neck to beyond the shoulders to overlap the arm 4 of the wearer so as to afford protection when an infants head is resting on the garment as shown in the drawing.
The lapel portions of the garment are fastened to the ends of an elastic waist band 5, or other suitable tie-bands, and are provided with a snap button fastener 6 at the front as shown in Fig. 2. The garment is put on by unfastening the snap button 6 and slipping the arms under the shoulders and between the shoulder and the waist band 5. It is then adjusted to the body of the wearer and fastened by snapping button 6 as shown in Fig. 2. The waist band is more of a back band as shown in Fig. 1, as it is not necessary to extend the lapels 2 all the way down the front to the waist line. In this manner the protective garment does not lend undue warmth to the wearer in hot weather and does not cover the dress or garment of the person to any great degree, so as to itself lend the appearance of being a garment instead of protective wearing apparel.
By means of the wide shoulder portions protecting the shoulders and the back portion protecting the back, with the wide lapels at the front, the garment truly protects the wearer from any moisture emitted from the infant's mouth at such times when the infant has to be carried to relieve it of gastronomical distress. The protective garment may be sterilized for hospital use to protect the infant from the clothing of the wearer, and affords sanitary protection in home use. By means of the one-piece back, shoulder and lapel construction with the connecting waist band, the garment will retain its position on the wearer, which is difficult when handling small infants in the customary manner.
The garment is cut out by doubling the material along the dotted line 8 shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing, which is for illustration only and is not a seam. The double material is then cut straight across the shoulder line 3, Fig. 1, and is cut out curved to form the neck and vest portion. It may be constructed of a soft inner-,
lining material with a more or less moisture-proof outer material, and sewn with a bias tape designated by the numeral 1, Fig. 3 of the drawing.
It is evident from the foregoing description of the invention that protective garments made in accordance therewith are of simple and economical construction and fully protect the wearer in use.
Although one embodiment of the invention has been herein illustrated and described, it will be evident to those skilled in the art that various modifications may be made in the details of construction without departing from the principles herein set forth.
I claim:
A protective garment for handling infants comprising an integral shoulder and back portion with separate front panel portions extending from opposite sides of the, back portion to cover the upper chest portion of the wearer and tailored to conform to the neck and shoulders of the wearer, the back portion extending a sub stantial distance from the neck opening down the back entirely across the back and shoulders and beyond the shoulders to cover the upper arm portions of the wearer, the said front panel portions having a single fastening means at the bottom thereof on the adiacent inner edges thereof and being connecterd across the back of the garment by an elastic waist band attached to the outer edges of the front panel portions and adapted to lie below the lower edge of the shoulder and back portion.
