This invention relates to ioldedblhflk paperboard bottle carriers of the kind that are PIP- vided with a bottle partition having a handle portion adapted to extend above the tops of the bottles in said carrier.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a bottle carrierof the aboye type haying a fixed partition with a handle portion which normally extends above the tops of the bottles in the carrier and is yieldaple downwardly under the pressure exerted thereon by another carrier seated on the tops of the =bottles; i n the lower carrier and tends to return to its normal posi tion when the upper carrier is removed, Other objects are to provide a reusable folsled-plank posed in and permanently and irnrnovably setoured :to said box section and whose handle portion normally extends above the level of the to ps of the bottles in the carrier and is :yielda'lqle downwardly under vertical pressure thereon to bring :the top of the handle portion flush with o the tops .of the bottles in said box section. The invention also vconsistsin the bottle carrier and in the parts and arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
2 Claims. (01.229228) In the accompanying drawings, which form;
part of this specification and wherein like symbols refer to like parts whereyer they occur,
Fig. 1 is a perspective ,view of a pantitioned folded-blank bottle carrier embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing the three se t on of the carrier in pos tion for assemb y.
f e-131m end v t oaa la o h -c rri a portion of the end wall nap being shown broken away,
Fig, 4 ;is an end elevational yiew of theearrier, showing the handle portion of the longitudinal portion depressed; and
Fig. ,5 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view .on the line 5-5 in Fig, 3.
qI n .the accompanying drawings my invention is shown embodied in a folded-blank paperboard bottle carrier comprising a permanently open box section A, a transverse partition section B and a combination longitudinal partition and. carrying handle section C.
"'I';he open box section A of the bottle carrier comprises a bottom panel 1 having upward-1y folded end wall panels =2 terminating in ripper marginal flaps 3,' and side wall panels 4 having folded upper marginal flaps 4 adhesively or otherwise permanently secured to their inner faces and having overlapped inturned end wall flaps with interlocked locking tongues 45. The end wall panels =2 entirely cover the outer faces of the overlapped and interlocked end wall flaps 5. r
The transverse partition section B of the carrier is in the form of a relatively deep openended channel having a bottom panel l with'upstanding partition panels 8 along the longitudinal edges thereof. The transverse partition =B extends from side to side of the box section A midway of the .ends thereof with its bottom panel :I seated on .the bottom panel I of said box section and with its tupstanding partition panels 18 disposed crosswise of the latter flush with the upper {edges thereof. As shown .on :the drawings, the two transverse partition panels 8 are each proyided midway of the side wall panels d of the hex section A with relatively deep il-shaped -;notches- 29 that extend downwardly from the upper ed efi of said transverse partition panels to a P in substantially midway of the height thence-fli-hc te mination lon itudina p t n a d handle am mber G of the c r comprises wo cqn l ting i flng tudinal partition p nels 1! t that ex end E9 1 and 7 a d f the box section A m dway of the sid wa panels 14 th f a d r ersely xt ndin ri ht .an ular y disposed .end flanges Ll that extend from top to bottom of said Joox section. The ,upper marginal flaps 3fof the end wallpanels ;2.of the :box section .Aa io edo a th tops and a st he inner faces ot the end flanges .Ll of the section C on opposite sides of the longitudinal-partition panels l0 thereof. The flaps 3, end iianges M, inter loc ed and wa {flap a d e w pan l 2 are all permanently secured together at the ends of thecarrierpreferably 10y means of staples 4-2. Th two iflatwise contacting n tud nal partition panels 1.9 are provided opposite the two -cm s patt t q ane s w th e a i e y deep isteringinverted tvrshaped notches J3 which extend npwardlyirom the lower edges of said longitndinal partition panels and cooperate with the inwar y ope in notche i sai ro -pawn tion panels to form an interlocking connection therewith which serves to prevent relative sidewise movement of said longitudinal and crosspartition panels.
As shown in the drawings, the two longitudinal partition panels I are extended, as at I0 above the level of the top of the box section A of the carrier to a point normally disposed above the level of the tops of the bottles located in the compartments formed by said longitudinal panels and the transverse partition panels 8 where the two longitudinal partition panels are integrally connected along the upper edges thereof by a longitudinal fold M. The handle portions l0 of the two longitudinal partition panels I0 are also provided with registering hand holes [5; and said hand holes may also be provided along their upper edges with flaps [6 adapted to be bent inwardly through said hand holes to provide a smooth round surface for the fingers.
By the arrangement described, the ends of the lower box section engaging portions of the two central longitudinal partition panels I0 are rigidly secured to the ends of the box and are thus held against vertical and horizontal movement relative thereto, the fixed lower portion of the two longitudinal partition panels serving also to hold the transverse partition section B in proper position in the box section. The securing means for the longitudinal partition and handle section C also serves to secure the elements of the box section A in assembled relation, thereby providing a strong and durable reusable carrier. The upwardly extending handle forming portions ID of the two longitudinal partition panels [0 nor-' mally extend upwardly in substantially flatwise contact to a point located above the level of the tops of the bottles supported in the carrier so as to provide ample room for inserting the hand between the rows of bottles on the opposite sides" of said handle portions and for insertion of fingers in the registering hand holes I5 therein. The upwardly extending handle forming portions Ill of the two longitudinal partition panels 10 are connected and strengthened by the fold I4 along the upper edges thereof. However, when the carriers are stacked one upon another with the bottom of one carrier seated on the tops of the bottles in th carrier immediately therebelow, the upper carrier presses downwardly against the longitudinal connecting fold l4 along the upper edges of the handle portions Ill of the two longitudinal partitions [9, thereby spreading said handle portions apart and permitting them to be depressed along their upper edges far enough to enable the upper carrier to seat on the bottles in the lower carrier. When the handle portions l0 are depressed, they bow outwardly away from each other far enough to permit the required downward movement of the integrally connected upper edges thereof. The depressed handle portions, however, due to the inherent resiliency thereof, tend to spring upwardly into their normal fully extended position when the downward pressure thereon is released.
What I claim is:
l. A bottle carrier comprising an open foldedblank box section having side walls with upper marginal flaps that are permanently secured flatwise to the inner faces thereof and end wall flaps that are folded into overlapped and interlocked engagement and a bottom panel having end wall panels that are folded upwardly against the outer faces of said end wall flaps, a transverse partition member disposed within and extending transversely of said box section with its upper edge 4 l flush with the upper edges thereof, and a longitudinal partition section having a lower portion disposed within said box section in interlocking engagement with said transverse partition section and a handle portion extending above said box section, said lower portion of said longitudinal partition section having end flanges that extend from top to bottom of said box section and seat flatwise against the inner faces of the overlapped and interlocked end wall flaps thereof, said end wall panels having upper marginal flaps thereon that are folded over the upper edges of said end wall flaps and end flanges and are secured thereto, said box sec-tion being adapted to hold bottles, said longitudinal partition comprising two side panels that are connected together along the upper edge of said handle portion and are adapted to bow outwardly from each other, said handle portion normally extending above the level of the bottles and being yieldable under downward pressure.
2. A bottle carrier comprising an open foldedblank box having a bottom panel structure, a pair of oppositely disposed side walls and a pair of oppositely disposed end walls forming a box section, a separate partition member consisting of connected together panels substantially coextensive in dimensions with each other and having the lower portion thereof disposed within said box section and with a handle portion thereof extending above the box section, said lower portion of said partition having end flanges extending vertically and substantially at opposite right angles from each end of each partition panel thereof and constituting two pairs of such flanges that extend over the inner faces of said pair of end walls, said pair of end walls each having an upper marginal flap extension for substantially its full width and the distance between the other of said opposed walls, each flap having an open-ended straight slot therein substantially intermediate of its ends extending at substantially right angles to its inner edge and folded downwardly over the flanges of the partition and fixed to its respective end wall so as to be substantially parallel with the inner face of said wall, and with opposite edges thereof formed by the slot engaging adjacent substantially vertically disposed opposite portions of each panel forming the partition member, whereby the partition member is flxed in the box section against vertical and lateral movements relative thereto.
