Application February a, 1949, Serial No; 74,454
3 Claims. (01. 155-365) This invention relates to bath apparatus to be used primarily by invalids or feeble persons to facilitate their entering and leaving an ordinary bath tub.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a bath tub chair which may be simply and easily manipulated by the person seated in the chair for raising and lowering the same.
Another important object of this invention is to provide a bath tub chair of the character described in which the raising and lowering of the chair are hydraulically operated by hand levers.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a chair of the character described in which both the seat member and the standard for supporting the seat are both rotatable so that the seat can be properly positioned over the bath tub for lowering therein and also properly positioned outside the bath tub when the occupant is leaving the latter.
These, together with various ancillary objects and features of the invention which will later become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by the device, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated by way of example only in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bath tub chair of the instant invention; and
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially in the plane of section line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Specific reference is now made to the drawings. In the several views in the accompanying drawings and in the following specification similar reference characters indicate corresponding elements throughout.
Indicated generally at H) is a conventional, hollow tapered base which is secured by means of nails or screws l2 to the floor I4 adjacent a bath tub I6. Pivotally supported upon the base by a means to be later described is a vertical standard l8 upon which is slidably supported a cylinder or housing having a suitable hydraulic mechanism thereon substantially similar to that of United States Patent No. 2,563,912, issued to J. A. Belinkin on August 14, 1951, and operated by a lever arm 22 for lowering the housing 20 and a lever arm 24 for raising the housing.
Secured to the housing 20 by means of an appropriate collar 26 is a relatively long arm 28, preferably arcuated and of channel construction having a collar member 38 at its free end in which is slidably received a pin 32 depending from the seat portion 34 of a chair 36. Thus it will be seen that the chair can be raised and lowered by the lever arms 22 and 24 and the chair is additionally pivotal on the supporting arm 28.
In order to make it possible to urge the seat member or chair 36 toward or away from the bath tub I6 a means for rotatably or pivotally supporting the standard l8 upon the base I2 is provided which consists of the following elements. As will be seen clearly from Figure 2, the base I2 is hollow and the standard l8 extends through the base which is provided in a suitable recess at its top end with a bearing 38 having appropriate races and rollers 40 therein. Adjacent the bottom of the base [2 are internal shoulders 42 upon which is supporteda plate 44 by means of appropriate screws 46. The top of the plate 44 is appropriately recessed to retain a friction plate 48 therein. The bottom of the standard I8 is provided with a complementary plate 50 which is rotatable on the plate 48 by means of balls or anti-friction rollers 52 appropriately positioned in aligned races in both the plates 48 and 58. Thus it will be seen that the standard l8 can rotate relative to the base so that the chair 36 can move toward and away from the bath tub l6 when the occupant is either entering or leaving the bath tub.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A bath tub chair comprising'a base, a standard, a cylinder slidable vertically on said standard, means for rotatably supporting said standard upon said base, an arm supported on said cylinder, hydraulic means for raising and lowering said cylinder, a seat member, and means for pivotally supporting said seat member upon said arm, said first-named means including a bearing having a first plate carried by said base, a second plate carried at the bottom of said standard rotatable on said first plate, and antifriction means between said plates.
2. A bath tub chair comprising a base, a standard, a cylinder slidable vertically on said standard, means for rotatably supporting said standard upon said base, an arm supported on said cylinder, hydraulic means for raising and lowering said cylinder, a seat member, and means for pivotally supporting said seat member upon said arm, said first-named means including a bearing having a first plate carried by said base, a second plate carried at the bottom of said standard;rotatable'on said first plate, andrantifriction-means between said plates, said antifriction means including races in said plates and anti-friction rollers in said races.
3. A bath tub chair comprising a base, a stand.-
ard, a cylinder slidable vertically on said'sta'ndard, means for rotatably supporting saidi s'tanda" ard upon said base, an arm supported on saidm cylinder, hydraulic means for raisingandloweb,
ing said cylinder, a seat member, and means for pivotally supporting said seat member, upon said 4 second plate carried at the bottom of said standard rotatable on said first plate, and anti-friction means between said plates, said anti-friction means including races in said plates and anti-friction rollers in said races, said lastnamed means including a collar carried at the free end of said arm and a pin depending from said seat member and rotatably received in said collstit;
