Claims priority, application France March 1'7, 1951 8 Claims.
The present invention relates to a lip-stick case of the type which comprises an outer cover containing a working tube fast with the base of the case and in which is located the stick-holding socket, said working tube comprising a projection which cooperates with a guiding device inside the cover of the case so that it may slide longitudinally downwards while carrying along with it a closing flap for the case, whereafter it may be shifted angularly when at the end of its stroke downwards in order to become fast with the closing flap and with the stick-holding socket and vice versa.
The. present invention has for its object to provide an improved case of this type of a substantially simplified and, consequently, less expensive manufacture.
The case in accordance with the present invention fundamentally comprises an outer cover in which a guiding element of a generally tubular shape is fastened, inside which a working tube fast with a base is slidably and partially rotatably mounted inside which tube a socket provided to receive a lip-stick is slidably and partially rotatably mounted, the guiding element comprising a guide in which a control member slides to which a flap is pivotally secured, said flap sliding in the cover and being arranged so as to close an opening provided at one end of said cover for the passage of the lip-stick, the
working tube comprising a projection capable, through rotation of said tube, to engage the control member of said flap and to disengage from said member according to the direction of said rotation and the stick-holding socket comprising a projection capable of sliding in two longitudinal slots provided in the working tube and the guiding element respectively, said slots being provided with side extensions substantially perpendicular to their longitudinal axis and directed towards the same side, the side extension of the slot in the working tube being at that end of said slot which is farthest to the base whilst the side extension of the slot in the guiding element is at the end opposed to this latter slot.
A mode of realisation of the invention will be more particularly described hereunder with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figs. 7 and 8 are two perspective views of the case as seen from two opposed sides in the course of this latter working step. I is a cover in which a guiding element 2 is arranged. Located in this guiding element is a working tube 3' provided with a base 4 and containing a stick-holding socket 5 intended to receive the lip-stick '6 which is maintained therein through lugs I obtained through punching the wall of said socket.
The cover I is provided with a rectangular face 8, a half-cylindrical face 9 and two parallel parts II) which connect the half-cylindrical face to the side edges of face 8. This latter is extended through an upper part II substantially showing the shape of a quarter of a cylinder the axis of which is perpendicular to the side faces II). An opening I2 provided in part II forms an outlet for lip-stick *6. This opening I2 may be closed through a flap I3 fitting the shape of the upper part I I of the cover.
The general shape of the guiding element 2 inside cover I is that of a tube the diameter of which is such that said tube fits into the halfcylindrical part 9 of cover I and which comprises on its whole length a slot along both edges of which checks I4 and Ida extend which are longitudinally turned down in order to form flanges I5 and I511 capable of resting against the inner part of the rectangular face 8 of cover I. Element 2 is maintained in cover I by means of a plate I 6 which fits over the lower part of the cover and which is provided with a hole I! for the passage of the working tube 3. Upper part I8 of element 2 is so shaped that when the slide is in position in cover I, a free interval substantially corresponding to the thickness of shutter or flap I3 and of its linking members which will be described later on, is provided between said part I8 and the inner wall of the cover, while considering the shifting which is necessary for the movement of said shutter.
In the tubular part of element 2 and along flange I4, a small longitudinal tongue I9 is cut, which is turned down against said flange I4, a slot 20 which is parallel with the axis of element 2 being provided through this cutting. Tongue I9 and flange I 4 are, furthermore, notched at 2! in order to provide a side extension of slot 20 at one of its ends. Another longitudinal slot 22 is provided in the tubular part of element 2, said slot being substantially diametrically opposed to slot 20 and terminating in its lower part in a side extension 23.
Slidably mounted between cheeks I 4 and I 4a of element 2, is a slide 24 of Ushaped crosssection the legs of which rest on the inner wall of face 8 of cover I Whilst its middle part is curved in order to be able to apply against the working tube 3 when the latter is introduced into element 2. Said slide 24 comprises a longitudinal recess 25 in the shape of a slot, extending both in its middle part and in one of its flanges, the slide 24 being extended to form a small tongue 2 carrying a small axis 21 inserted in a bearing 23 formed through rolling up of a small tongue 23 fast with shutter I 3.
Working tube 3 carries, on one side, a side stud 33 which may slide in slot 23 of element Z'and in the recess 25 of slide 25. On the other side of tube 3 a longitudinal slot 3I is provided which has a side extension 32 at its upper end.
Finally, extending diametrically through the lip-stick carrying socket '5, is a rod '33 one end 35 of which projects on one side of said socket and enters slot 3| of working tube 3 and slot 22 of element 2.
The above lip-stick works in the following manner:'
'In its closing position shown in Figure 2, the working tube 3 is pushed home into the guiding element 2, stud 30 of said tube 3 being inserted in the longitudinal recess 25 of slide 24, which is then in the upper part of the passage provided between cheeks I4 and Ma of element 2, flap I3 obstructing the upper opening I2 of cover I.' On the other hand, the lip-stick carrying socket 5 with'lip-stick 6is also pushed home into tube 3; the end 34 of rod 33 being inserted through slot 3| of said tube 3 in the side extension 23 of slot 22 of guiding element 2' (Figure 3).
In order to cause the lip-stick 6 to move out of the case, base 4 is first drawn with one hand in the direction'indicated by arrow f1 in Figures 4 and 5 while maintaining cover I, not shown in Figures 4 and5, with the other hand. The end 34 of rod 33 (Figure 4) slides'in slot 3! of tube 3 which is drawn downwardly but remains held fast in the side extension 23 of slot 22 of guiding element 2, which is held fast at the same time as cover I. It results therefrom that the lipstick carrying socket 5 is also held fast with respect to element 2 and to cover I and that lip-stick 6 is extracted from working tube 3. Stud 33 carried by tube 3 slides in the longitudinal recess 25 of slide 24 till the position shown in Figure 5,
in which position said stud comes into contact with the lower 'end of recess 25. 'By still further pulling on base 4 the end in the direction of arrow f1, slide 24 and, with it, shutter I3 are carried along by the stud 3B, slide 24 sliding in the passage provided between cheeks I4 and Ma of element 2 till shutter I3 reaches the position shown in Figure 7, in which position it completely uncovers the opening I2 of cover I. At this moment the lower end of recess 25 of slide 24 is-opposite the side extension 2| of slot 23 of guiding element 2. The movement of tube 3 in element 2 is interrupted owing to the fact that the end 34 of rod 33 is at the same time at the 3 lower end of slot 22 of element 2 and at the upper end of slot 3! of tube 3.
Base 4 and working tube 3 are then pivoted in order to bring said base to the angular position shown in Figures 6, '7 and 8. During this movement, on the one hand, stud 30 of working tube 3 passes through the side extension .2! of slot 20 into said slot and, on the other hand, the end 34 of rod 33 of the lip-stick carrying socket passes from the side extension 23 of slot 22 of the guiding element 2 into the side extension 32 of slot 3! of tube 3 with respect to which it is then held fast.
The following operation consists in pushing back base 4 with tube 3 in the direction of arrow {2 (Figures 7 and 8). In this movement stud 30 of tube 3 rises freely again in slot 29 of guiding element 2 (Figure 7) and, on the other hand, the end 34 of rod 33 of the lip-stick carrying socket 5 freely slides in slot 3| of element 2 (Figure 8) and the lip-stick 6 which is fast with socket 5 held fast with respect to tube 3 is pushed out of cover I through the opening I2.
In order to cause the lip-stick 6 to re-enter cover I and to close the opening #2, the above described operations are repeated in a reverse direction, i. e. base 4 is pulled upon anew; this causes the lip-stick to re-enter the cover, then said base is pivoted in order to' bring it again to the initial angular position which has for its effect, on the one hand, to separate socket 5 from tube 3 and to hold it fast with guiding element 2 and, on the other hand, to bring stud 30 of tube 3 into recess 25 of slide 24 whereafter base 4 is pushed back in order to cause tube 3to reenter' the guiding element 2. In a lip-stick case, a cover having at one end an opening for the passage of the stick, a guiding member secured inside said cover and formed of a generally cylindrical sheet having confronting edges folded back parallel to each other thereby forming a longitudinal guiding channel, a first longitudinal slot in said guiding member, extending along one of said folded back edges, said folded back edge having an opening communicating between said guiding channel and the end of said slot adjacent the other end of said cover, a second longitudinal slot in said guiding member having a lateral extension located at the end of said second slot which is adjacent said other end of said cover, a tube slidably and rotatably mounted in said guide to move between an inner position within said cover and an outer position in which it projects partially out of said other end of the cover, a hand-grip base secured to the end of said tube adapted to project out of said cover, said tube being provided with a longitudinal slot extending substantially the whole length of said tube and having a lateral extension located at the end of said slot opposite said hand-grip base, said lateral extension extending on the same side of said slot as the lateral extension of said second slot in said guiding member, a stick-holding socket mounted to rotate and slide in said tube, a laterally projecting pin-like member on said socket, adapted to extend and slide in both the second slot in said guiding member and in the slot in said tube, a slide movable in said guiding channel of said guiding member, having two faces applied against said two folded back edges forming said guiding channel, and one face applied against said tube sliding in said guiding member, a flap hingedly connected to said slide and adapted to close said opening in the cover, a longitudinal slot in said slide, opening both on the face of said slide which is applied against said tube and on the face of said slide which is applied against that of said folded back edges of the guiding member along which extends the slot in said member, and a pin-like member extending laterally from said tube and adapted to penetrate respectively the slot in said slide upon rotation of said tube in one direction and the first slot in the guiding member upon rotation of said tube in the other direction.

In a lip-stick case, a tube having a base at one end, a lip-stick socket slidable in said tube, a generally cylindrical guide surrounding said tube and slidable and rotatable relative thereto, a cover slidable over said guide and having an opening in the end thereof opposite said base, said tube and said guide each being provided with a longitudinal slot, the slot in said tube having a laterally offset end at the end of said tube remote from said base, and the end of the slot in said guide towards said base being laterally offset, said ends of said slots being laterally offset in the same direction, a pin carried by said socket and projecting through said slots and normally arranged in the offset end of the slot in said guide, said cover frictionally engaging said guide, whereby when said pin is in said normal position, movement of said guide away from said base transmits movement to said socket through said pin to withdraw it from said tube until said pin registers with the offset end of the slot in said tube, whereupon said guide may be rotated relative to said tube to position said pin in the offset end of said tube, and then slidingmowa ment of said cover and said guide toward said base will take place with said pin remaining in the offset end of the slot in said tube to hold said socket in withdrawn position relative to said tube whereby the lip-stick will project through the opening in said cover.
4. A lip-stick case constructed in accordance with claim 3 provided with a flap within said cover to close the opening therein, a slide to which said flap is pivotally connected, and means cooperating between said guide and said slide for holding said flap away from the opening in said cover upon sliding movement of said pin in said slots away from its normal position.

A lip-stick case constructed in accordance with claim 3 provided with a flap within said cover to close the opening therein, a slide to which said flap is pivotally connected, means cooperating between said guide and said slide for holding said flap away from the opening in said cover upon sliding movement of said pin in said slots away from its normal position, said cooperating means and said guide having portions engageable when said pin is adjacent the offset end of the slot in said guide and said guide is rotated, to engage said pin in the last named offset end for fixing said slide against endwise movement relative to said guide.

A lip-stick holder constructed in accordance with claim 3, wherein said guide is provided with spaced parallel edges defining a channel, a slide mounted in said channel, a flap pivotally connected to said slide and normally arranged within and closing the opening in said cover, and means cooperating between said guide and said slide for effecting movement of said slide relative to said guide away from the opening in said cover to uncover such opening upon sliding movement of said pin in said slots away from said nor-- mal position of said pin.

A lip-stick holder constructed in accordance with claim 3, wherein said guide is provided with spaced parallel edges defining a channel, a slide mounted in said channel, a flap pivotally connected to said slide and normally arranged within and closing the opening in said cover, and means cooperating between said guide and said slide for eifecting movement of said slide relative to said guide away from the opening in said cover to uncover such opening upon sliding movement of said pin in said slots away from said normal position of said pin, said cooperating means comprising a stud carried by said tube, said guide having a slot in which said stud is slidable to provide lost motion connection between said tube and said slide which lost motion is limited to substantially less movement than the total movement of said pin in the slots in said tube and said guide whereby, prior to movement of said pin in the last named slots to its limit of movement, said stud will engage said slide to move it longitudinally relative to said guide to move said flap out of registration with the opening in said cover.

A lip-stick holder constructed in accordance with claim 3, wherein said guide is provided with spaced parallel edges defining a channel, .a slide mounted in said channel, a flap pivotally connected to said slide and normally arranged within and closing the opening in said cover, and means cooperating between said guide and said slide for effecting movement of said slide relative to said guide away from the opening in said cover to uncover such opening upon sliding movement of said pin'in said slots away from said normal position of said pin, said cooperating means comprising a stud carried by said tube. said guide having a, slot in which said stud is slidable to provide lost motion connection between said tube and said slide which lost motion is limited to substantially less movement than the total movement of said pin in the slots in said tube and said guide whereby, prior to'movement of said pin in the last named slots to its limit of movement, said stud will engage said slide to move it longitudinally relative to said guide to move said flap out of registration with the opening in said cover, the slot in said guide in which said stud operates having a laterally SOPHIE FRYDLEN'DER.
