This invention relates to lipstick holders of the type adapted to be operated entirely by one hand and has for its object to make a light weight, compact construction Which is easy to open and close and in which the cover is positively actuated for both the opening and closing movement so that no spring opposes motion of the cover in either direction.
There have been several suggestions for lipstick holders which are adapted for one-hand operation in which the cover is removed and the material ejected all by a sliding knob actuated by the thumb While the device is held in the fingers of the same hand.v One such suggestion has contemplated a thin exible `metal ribbon which is bent across an opening at one end and attached to a carrier at the opposite end, an actuating knob being 'secured to the ribbon intermediate its ends and projecting through a slot in the casing. The objection to this construction is that it has proven too heavy and bulky and the ribbon too fragile to withstand hard usage.
Another construction has contemplated a spring pressed cover but it has been found so diicult to open the cover against the action of the spring that tivo hands are generally necessary in order for the device to be operated.
In contrast to these constructions the present g l. invention provides a more compact, light-weight,
strong construction which uses no thin and easily deformed ribbon nor any spring actuated cover, the cover of the present invention being easily opened and closed with little eiort by movement One factor contributing to the ease of opening the cover in the present construction is that the force to lift the cover is supplied at a substantial distance from the pivot with the result that the greater leverage requires less effort to raise the cover.

In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 to 10 inclusive, the outer casing I0 is shown as being provided With two cover portions II, actuated by the knob I2 to open for ejection of the lipstick material I3, the knob I2 being slidable in the slot I4 of the outer casing I0.
The outer casing I0 is comprised of two portions, the outer portion shown in Fig. 5 and the inner portion shown in Fig. 6. The device is assembled by telescopically inserting the portion I5 within the outer part I0 when the stamped-out projection I6 on the inner portion I5 engages the inside of a correspondingly stamped-out portion il on the outer part, whereby the two parts of the outer tube or casing are resiliently or yieldably connected to function as a single part. At the top of the inner portion I5 are provided the knuckles I8 carrying the cover4 pintles. The sides between the knuckles are recessed or cut out as shown at I9 so that the downwardly extending side flange portions of each cover may engage within this recessed part when the cover is closed as shown in Fig. 9. The slot 20 in the inner portion I5 is wider than the slot I4 in the outer portion II] for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
Slidably received within the portions of the outer tube or casing, that is within the tube I5, is the carrier guide tube or cover actuator 2l. This tube also has an inclined longitudinal sloiI 22, the lower end of which is provided with a transversely extending portion 23, as shown in Fig. 7. Outwardly extendingr pins 24. are provided to' actuate the covers II. Slidable within the inner tube 2I is the carrier 25 having the transverse slot 26, said carrier holding the lipstick material or pencil I3.
As shown in Fig. 4 the actuating knob I2 is provided With a shank, pin or stem 2'I having a reduced portion 28 adjacent the knob and where the stem passes through the outer portion I of the outer casing. The slot I4 in the outer portion IIJ is narrower than the slots 29, 22 or 26, with the result that when the reduced portion 28 of the knob stern is engaged within the narrow slot I4 the knob is prevented from being withdrawn or falling out of the device. The upper end of the narrow slot I4 is enlarged to permit insertion of the stem 2'! during assembly.
The cover portions II are mounted on pintles 29 passing through the knuckles I8 and each cover portion II has side anges 3D, shown in Figs. 9 and 1G. One of these side flanges 30 of each cover portion is provided with a curved slot 3| of the general shape indicated. In each slot 3| is placed one of the pins 24.
To assemble the device illustrated, the inner portion I5 of the outer tube or casing is placed within the outer portion I0 and yieldably locked therein when the projection I6 engages the recessed portion I 'I. The inner tube 2l is then placed within the outer tube. The carrier 25 and material I 3 may then be inserted in the inner tube. Before pushing the carrier 25 well down inside the inner tube 2I it is desirable to insert the actuating knob I2 into the upper end of the slot I4 so that the stem 2'I of the knob I2 passes through the slot 29, the slot 22 and engages the slot 26 in the carrier 25. The cover portions I I are next mounted on their respective pintles 29. with the pins 24 engaging the slots 3l, as shown in Fig. 3. When the device has been thus assembled the actuating knob may be pushed down, withdrawing the carrier and material I3 within the inner tube 2I. During the first portion of the downward movement of the actuating knob I2 there will be no relative movement between the inner and outer tubes because their slots are all in alignment but after the stem 2I of the knob I2 reaches the end of the slot 22 in the inner tube, it then causes the inner tube 2| to slide with the carrier 25 during the balance of the downward movement of the knob. This downward movement of the inner shutter tube 2l closes the slot I4 and also causes the pins 24 sliding in the slots 3| to close the covers I I. As shown in Fig. 9 the pins 24 are only the thickness of the anged portions 30 of the covers.
During the latter part of the downward movement of the actuating knob I2 the shank 2'I is guided by the coaxial slots I4 and 20 of the outer tube and these slots cause the shank 21 to be moved transversely Within the lower end portion oi the slot 22, as well as transversely within the slot 26 of the carrier 25. The dotted lines in Fig. 1 show the position of the slot 22 of the inner tube 2l when the carrier is completely lowered and the covers closed. In this position it will be seen that the inner tube 2I closes the slots I4 and 29 of the outer tube or casing.
On moving the actuating knob I2 upwardly from, the position shown in Fig. 1 the shank 2l first causes the carrier 25 and inner tube 2l to be simultaneously raised until the shank Z'I is within the inclined slotl 22 of the inner tube and this slot 22 is aligned with the slots I4 and 20 of the outer tube. As soon as these slots are aligned, outward movement of the inner tube ceases and Y as that in the inner tube of Fig. 7
continued raising of the knob I2 functions only to raise the carrier 25 and material I3. Since the pintles 29 are carried within the knuckles I8 of the outer casing, it will be appreciated that outward movement of the inner tube 2l, raising the pins 24, simultaneously raises the cover portions II. The device is preferably proportioned as indicated so that the covers raise a suilicient amount to allow the material I3 to be ejected without the material contacting with the cover, since this material is of a soft cake type that would otherwise be worn away by the covers.
Among the advantages of this invention may be enumerated the fact that the device is readily operable by the thumb while the outer casing is held in the fingers of the same hand, thus requiring the operator to use only one hand. Inasrnuch as a lady frequently carries packages or a pocketbook or gloves or other articles in one hand, the value of this device will be better appreciated.
Another advantage is the ease of opening the covers since there are no springs which oppose movement of the covers in either direction.
Another advantage is the compact design and arrangement in order that the device may occupy small dimensions.
While plated brass or other readily stamped metal may be used in forming this invention, nevertheless aluminum or aluminum alloys may be used to provide additional lightness in weight.
The use of two covers instead of one necessitates less movement of the inner tube before both covers are opened a sufficient amount for ejection of the material I3. The pins 24 which transmit the opening thrust to the covers are spaced from the pintles and this leverage is another reason why the covers are easy to actuate. It will be seen that a notable eature is the positive actuation of the covers in both the opening and closing movements.
Another feature is the arrangement of the slots I4 and 20 so that the constricted width to the slot I4 prevents the shank 21 of the knob I2 coming out and causes it to be locked in position during normal operation.
The device shown by Figs. l1 to 19 inclusive is another embodiment of this invention which is similar in purpose and function to that shown by Figs. 1 to 10 inclusive. The drawn metal casing or outer tube 32 is closed at its lower end and provided with a slot 33 along which moves the actuating knob for the covers, lipstick carrier and inner tube. The casing 32 is provided with integral bent metal knuckles 34 on opposite top edges as shown in Fig. 16 for the purpose oi having .the cover portions 35 pivotally secured thereto. The actuating knob 36 passes through the cover actuating and carrier guide tube 3l and into the lipstick carrier 25 as in the previous construction of Figs. l to 10. The tube 31 also functions as a shutter for the slot 33.
The inner tube 3`I is made of bent metal strip having a longitudinal slit 38 of the shape illustrated where the ends of the metal strip contact. Here again the inner tube is provided with an inclined longitudinal slot 39 of the same shape and is provided with a transverse lower end portion 40 for the same purpose. In order to space the inner tube from the walls of the casing the inner tube is shown as being provided on three sides with stamped out iingers lugs or tongue portions 4I which frictionally engage the casing walls. Instead of having such tongues on the front side of the inner tube containing th-e slot 39 a separate friction or shutter'plate is used as shown in Fig. 17. This plate 42 is also provided with an inclined slot ifi and a series or stamped out tongue portions 43. The plate i12 moves with the inner tube 3i' in closing the slot 33 in the casing 32 in the position shown in Fig. 11 when the cover portions 35 `are closed and the lipstick I3 withdrawn into the inner tube and casing.
A pair of siots t are provided one side of the inner tube adjacent its upper' edge as shown in Fig. 18. These slots receive the cover pin IMS there being one pin in each slot. This pin and slot connection is the same as that shown in the preceding embodimentof Figs. l to 1G except that the slots are here located in the inner tube while the pins are carried by the cover iianges t3, just the reverse of what is shownin Fig. 3. Instead of being curved the slots t5 in Fig. 18 are shown of nonuniform width. Preferably these slots and the pins are located' far enough away from the cover pivot to provide suiiicient leverage for easy operation of the covers when the actuating knob 36 is moved by the thumb while the device is held in one hand.
The shank of the actuating knob 3E is shown as being provided with a reduced portion El around which its a washer #i8 of any convenient form. This washer i8 is placed in position after the lipstick holder has been assembled but without the lipstick material being in place.
To assemble the device of Figs. 1l to 19 the inner tube 37 and the friction plate i2 are together inserted within the casing 32. The cover portions 35 are then secured by pivot pins to the casing knuckles Bil with the pins d5 engaging the slots 45. The carrier 25 is of the same shape as that shown in Figs. 4 and 8 and is neXt inserted within the inner tube. The actuating knob 35 is then inserted through casing 32 plate d2, inner tube 3i' and the transverse slot of the carrier. The actuating knob is then moved to a position at the upper end of its travel when said knob and its shank can have the washer i8 attached.
Stamped out tongue portions may also be provided, if desired, adjacent the top of the inner tube in order to space the top of the tube as well as the bottom from the casing walls, but such tongues must be shaped so as not to catch on the knuckles of the cover hinges. W'hen the pin and slot connection between the inner tube and covers are shaped as illustrated, these connections may also serve to position and guide the upper end portion of the inner tube and prevent its catching on the cover hinge knuckles. The slot in the friction plate is of the same size and shape as the slot in the inner tube. The inner and outer tube etc., may be made of brass provided with chromium plating or other suitable nish, or if desired they may be made of German silver or other alloys capable of presenting an attractive finish.
We claim:
l. A dispensing holder comprising a casing, a carrier for material to be discharged and slidv,able within said casing, 'a pivotal closure for said casing where the material is ejected, an inner tube, an actuating knob projecting through a longitudinal slot in said casing, and means connecting said closure with said knob whereby the closure may be positively opened and closed by movement of said knob and sair carrier simulaneously moved to eject material from said casg, said knob having a reduced portion where passes through the casing and said casing ving-at least a portion of its slot of smallerwidth than the slot in said inner tube whereby said knob is retained in place.
2. A dispensing holder comprising a casing, a carrier for material to be discharged and slidable within said casing, a pivotal closure for said casing where the material is ejected, an inner tube, an actuating knob projecting through a longitudinal slot in said casing, and means connecting said closure with said knob whereby the closure may be positively opened and closed by movement of said knob and said carrier simultaneously moved to eject material from said casing, said knob having a reduced portion where it passes through the casing and said casing having at least a portion of its slot ci smaller width than the slot in said inner tube whereby said knob is retained in place, said slot in the outer casing having an enlarged end through which said knob may be removable.
3. A lipstick holder comprising an outer tube, an inner tube, a carrier for lipstick material slidable within said inner tube, a cover, an actuating knob extending through the outer tube land connections between the inner tube and carrier and between inner tube and cover for simultaneously raising said cover and sliding the inner tube partway out of the outer tube and on continued movement of said knob moving the carrier to eject the lipstick material, said connections including a pin on said knob engaging said tubes through parallel inclined slots, the slotA in the inner tube being provided with a transversely disposed end portion to effect a movement of said inner tube during only partial movement oi the carrier.
4. A dispensing holder comprising a casing, a carrier for material to be discharged and slidable within said casing, a pivotal closure for said casing where the material is ejected, an actuating knob projecting from said casing, means connecting said closure with said knob whereby the closure may be positively opened and closed by movement of said knob and said carrier simultaneously moved to eject material from-said casing, said means including an inner casing slidable in the rst mentioned or outer casing by means oi said knob, both of said casings being provided with slots which do not coincide throughout their lengths whereby the inner casing may be movable b-y said knob to close the slot in the outer casing when said closure is shut, said slots being parallel and inclined, the inner slot being provided with a transverse offset portion at its end remote from the closure.
5. A lipstick holder comprising an outer tube, an inner tube, a carrier for lipstick material slidable within said inner tube, a pivotal cover, an actuating knob extending through the outer casing and connections between the inner tube and carrier constructed for simultaneously raising said cover and sliding the inner tube partway out of the outer tube and on continued movementof said knob moving the carrier to eject the lipstick material, said cover being connected to said inner tube by a pin and slot connection on a side non-parallel with the cover pivot, said tubes having inclined parallel slots and one oi said slots having a transverse oiset portion in and out of which said actuating knob may be moved by the other parallel slot.

A holder comprising an outer casing having a longitudinal slot therein, a carrier within the casing, an actuator for the carrier extending out of the casing through said slot, a shutter within the-casing for closing -fthe'slot when the carrier is retractedand opening the slot as the carrier is moved outwardly, said shutter having a longitudinal slot therein adapted for registration with at least the major portion of the casing slot, said shutter slot also having an offset portion xed out of alignment with respect to the major portion of the shutter slot and said casing slot, whereby movement of said actuator in the lower portion of said casing slot and at the same time in said offset portion of the shutter slot causes the shutter to close said casing slot.

A holder comprising an outer casing, of polygonal cross section having a longitudinal slot therein on one face, a carrier within the casing, an actuator for the carrier extending out or the casing through said slot, a cover movable in response to travel of the actuator in said slot, said slot being inclined from adjacent one corner of one side of the casing to adjacent a diagonally opposite corner of the same side of the casing.

A container of the class described comprising a casing having a longitudinal slot, a closure for said casing, a closure operator longitudinally movable in said casing, a carrier longitudinally slidable in said casing, said carrier constructed to move independently of said closure operator, means for erlecting releasable engagement between said closure operator and said carrier dur ing the initial movement of the latter to impart motion to the closure operator, means for arresting the movement of said closure operator while permitting continued movement of the carrier, said rst named means including a longitudinal slot in said closure operator having a lateral extension at its lower end to provide a shoulder, and means engaging said carrier and extending through said slots for manual operation of said carrier.
9. A cosmetic holder comprising an exterior casing, an interior sleeve slidable longitudinally of the exterior casing, a closure for the exterior casing movable to open and closed position in response to movement of said interior sleeve, a spring strip between the exterior casing and the interior sleeve, and a cosmetic carrier reciprocable in said interior sleeve to alternately project cosmetic for use and withdraw it for carriage.

A holder comprising a casing having a 1ongitudinal slot therein, a cover for the casing, a carrier within the casing, an actuator for the carrier extending out of the casing through said longitudinal slot, a shutter within said casing and between said carrier and casing for closing the longitudinal casing slot as the carrier is retracted and for opening the casing slot as the actuator and carrier are moved outwardly, said longitudinal casing slot being inclined and said shutter being of a size and so proportioned relative to the casing that the casing forms a guide for the same, said shutter also having a lateral recess in an end portion whereby said actuator may move the shutter to uncover the casing slot.
ll. A holder comprising a casing having a longitudinal slot therein, a cover for the casing, a carrier within the casing, an actuator for the carrier extending out or the casing through said longitudinal slot, a shutter within said casing and between said carrier and casing for closing the longitudinal casing slot as the carrier is retracted and for opening casing slot as the actuator and carrier are moved outwardly, said shutter being provided with a lateral recess at one end portion thereoi into which said actuator may be guided for moving said shutter, said lateral recess being of greater width than the casing slot and the portion of the actuator contiguous the shutter being larger than the portion passing through the casing slot, a portion of said casing slot being enlarged toy allow insertion of said actuator through the casing.
12. A holder comprising a casing having a 1ongitudinal slot therein, a cover for the casing, a carrier within the casing, an actuator for the carrier extending out of the casing through said longitudinal slot, a shutter within said casing and between said carrier and casing for closing the longitudinal casing slot as the carrier is retracted and for opening the casing slot .as the actuator andcarrier are moved outwardly, said shutter being provided with a lateral recess at one end portion thereof into which said actuator may be guided for moving said shutter, a pivotal connection between said shutter and cover, and guide means for each end portion of said shutter so arranged that movement of each end of the shutter is substantially parallel with the movement of the opposite end thereof.
13. A holder comprising a casing having a longitudinal slot therein, a cover for the casing, a carrier within the casing, an actuator for the carrier extending out of the casing through said longitudinal slot, a shutter within said casing and between said carrier and casing for closing the longitudinal casing slot as the carrier is retracted and for opening the casing slot as the actuator and carrier are moved outwardly, said shutter being provided with a lateral recess at one end portion thereof into which said actuator may be guided for moving said shutter, a pivotal connection between said shutter and cover, said connection being entirely within the casing when the cover is closed, and a pivotal connection between the cover and casing located at substantially the top of the casing and said shutter extending slightly out of the casing when the cover is fully opened, said cover when open being substantially close to the plane of the sides of the casing.
14. A holder comprising a casing having a longitudinal slot therein, a cover for the casing, a carrier within the casing, an actuator for the carrier extending out of the casing through said lonf gitudinal slot, a shutter within said casing and between said carrier and casing for closing the longitudinal casing slot as the carrier is retracted and for opening the casing slot as the actuator and carrier are moved outwardly, said shutter being provided with a lateral recess at one end portion thereof into which said actuator may be` guided for moving said shutter, a pivotal connection between said shutter and cover, and guide means for the end portion of the shutter adjacent said cover, which is independent of the cover, and which causes that end of the shutter to move parallel to itself, the cover and shutter having a pin and slot connection therebetween.
15. A holder comprising a casing having a longitudinal slot therein, a pair of covers for the casing, each closing substantially half the casing, a carrier within the casing, an actuator for the carrier extending out of the casing through said longitudinal slot, a shutter within said casing and between said carrier and casing for closing the longitudinal casing slot as the carrier is retracted and for opening the casing slot as the actuator and carrier are moved outwardly, said shutter being provided with a lateral recess at one end portion thereof into which said actuator may b guided for moving said shutter, a pivotal conn tion between said shutter and covers, said nection being entirely within the casing Wh covers are closed, and a pivotal connection between the covers and casing located at substantially the top of the casing and said shutter eX- tending slightly out of the casing when the covers are fully opened, the covers each having a movement of substantially less than 180 and each having a flange insertable between said casing and carrier.'
16. A holder comprising a casing having a longitudinal slot therein, a pair of covers for the casing, each closing substantially half the casing, a
carrier within the casing, an actuator for the car- Y rier extending out of the casing through said longitudinal slot, a shutter within said casing and between said carrier and casing for closing the longitudinal casing slot as the carrier is retracted and for opening the casing slot as the actuator and carrier are moved outwardly, said casing slot being substantially symmetrically disposed with respect to the casing axis, the shutter having a lateral recess adjacent one end and with which the actuator is engaged in moving the shutter with respect to said casing slot, a pivotal connection between the shutter and the covers, each cover being provided with side flanges adapted when the covers are closed to be close to the casing.
17. A holder comprising a casing having a longitudinal slot therein, a cover for the casing, a carrier within the casing, an actuator for the carrier extending out of the casing through said longitudinal slot, a shutter within said casing and between said carrier and casing for closing the longitudinal casing slot as the carrier is retracted and for opening the casing slot as the actuator and carrier are moved outwardly, the shutter having a lateral recess adjacent one end and with which the actuator is engaged in moving the shutter with respect to said casing slot, and frictional spring fingers on the shutter.
18. A holder comprising a casing having a longitudinal slot therein, a cover for the casing, a carrier within the casing, an actuator for the carrier extending out of the casing through said longitudinal slot, a shutter within said casing and between said carrier and casing for closing the longitudinal casing slot as the carrier is retracted and for opening the casing slot as the actuator and carrier are moved outwardly, the shutter having a lateral recess adjacent one end and with which the actuator is engaged in moving the shutter relatively to said casing slot, a guide tube for the carrier, and means for yieldaloly spacing at least one end portion of said tube from said casing.
19. A holder comprising a casing having a longitudinal slot therein, a cover for the casing, a
carrier within the casing, an actuator for the carrier extending out of the casing through said longitudinal slot, a shutter within said casing and between said carrier and casing for closing the longitudinal casing slot as the carrier is retracted and for opening the casing slot as the actuator and carrier are moved outwardly, the shutter having a lateral recess adjacent one end and with which the actuator is engaged in moving the shutter relatively to said casing slot, a guide tube for the carrier, located inwardly of the shutter.
