' O R SHARPE DENTIFRICE DISPENSING DEVICE Filed Aug. 25
Patented Nov. 4, 19 24 UNITED STATES 1,514,018 PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR B. BHABPE, 01! EAST BAN GABRIEL, CALIFORNIA.
DENTIFEICEDISPENSING DEV-ICE.
Application filed August 25. 1922. Seriafl No. 584,868.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OSCAR R. SHARPE, a c tizen of the United States, residing at East San Gabriel, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dcntifricc- Dispensing Devices, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to and has for its purpose the provision of a combined dentifrice dispensing device and tooth brush holder of extremely simple, durable and efficient construction.
It is also a purpose of my invention to provide a dentifrice dispensing device particularly adapted for the dispensing of tooth paste from a tube, the mechanism including a roller operable to compress the tube so as to dispense the amount of paste required.
It is also a purpose of my invention to provide a tooth brush holder incorporated in the dispensing device and including a chamber for hous ng the head of the brush which is controlled by a door constructed to maintain the casing closed irrespective of whether the brush head is within the casing or removed therefrom.
Although I have herein shown and de scribed only one form of dentifrice dispensing device and tooth brush embodying my invention, it is to be understood that various changes and modifications may be made herein without departing from the spirit of the invention and the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a view showing in front elevation one form of dispensing device and brush holder embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical. sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the operating yoke comprised in the dispensing device shown in the preceding views.
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of the locking bar comprised in the dispensing device.
Referring specifically to the drawings in which similar reference characters refer to similar parts, my invention in its present embodiment comprises a frame including a back 15, side walls 16, and bottom and top walls 17 and 18 respectively. This frame is formed of any suitable material, such as metal or the like, and is of suitable length to accommodate a compressible tube 19 for dentifrice or the like with the bottom wall 18 provided with an opening adapted to receive the neck 20 of the tube with the latter in inverted position within the frame. The side walls 16 of the frame are provided with longitudinal extending slots 21 in which is adapted to slide and rotate the ends of a pintle or shaft 22 upon which is carried a roller 23. Fixed to the opposite ends of the roller are spur gears 24 which constantly mesh with rack bars 25 secured to the inner side of the back 15 at points adjacent the side walls 16.
The roller is adapted to be rotated so as to move longitudinally of the frame by means of pawls 26 pivoted upon the parallel portions of the U-shaped yoke 27. The yoke in turn is pivoted at the freecnds of the parallel portions on the shaft 22 so that by gripping a handle 28 formed on the yoke and oscillating the latter, the pawls will be actuated to engage the gears 24 in effecting rotation of the roller along the rack bars 25.
For securing the closed or upper end of the tube 19 within the frame, and more particularly to prevent curling or outward movement of the tube end when a major portion of the tube has been compressed. a locking bar 29 is provided. As clearly shown in Fig. 5, this lock ng bar is provided at its ends with extensions 30, while along one horizontal edge, a co-extensive lip or ledge 31 is provided. In the applied position of the locking bar as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the extensions 30 are adapted to slide within slots 32 formed in the sides 16 and to thus slidably sustain the bar in transverse position within the frame. With the bar so arranged, the ledge 31 is disposed innermost so as to engage the upper edge of the tube 19 and thus prevent downward sliding movement of the bar.
From the foregoing arrangement it will be seen that the locking bar serves to prevent outward movement of the upper end of the tube so that when the major portion of thetube has been compressed and flattened. it will not move forwardly and curl and thus interfere with the proper operation of the dispensing device.
For normally closing the neck of the tube to prevent accidental dispensing of its contents, an auxiliary closure member 32 is mounted upon a spring arm 33 secured to the of the tube so that by manipulation of the bottom wall 18 of the frame. .It will be clear that when dentifrice is being dispensed from the tube 19, the closure member 32 can be dis laced from closingposition w1th.respect to 5m neck forcing the member downb wardly and shifting the same to one side or the other. 7
In the operation of the dispensing device,
the roller 23 is moved to the upper end of the dispensing frame to allow the application of 'the tube 19 within the frame. The roller is now adjusted so as to engage the upper end yoke 27, rotation of the roller 23 can be effected to'compress the tube in effecting an ejection of the paste from the neck 20. B
virtue of the mounting of the roller, it wi 1 be clear thatit can be moved the entire length of the tube so as to causethe complete ejection of the paste therefrom.
In conjunction with the dispensing device Y 'Iemploy a tooth brush holder which, as illustrated to advantage, in Fig. 3, comprises a.
'casingor housing 34 having a bottom wall the insertion of the head'of the brush into the casing. The casing 34vis' rovided with an open front side which is ate 1 times closed by a door including a pair'of right angul'arly disposed panels 36 and '37, rigidly connected to each other and pivotally mounted upon the casing by means of a pin 38. The head 0f-the tooth brush when in position within the casing 34, is interposed between the panels 36 and 37 so that when movingthelorus'h from the casing thebrush head will engage the panel 36 so as to swing the latter outwardly. As the panel 36 moves outwardly, a corresponding movement is imparted to the panel 37 so. that when the brush is finally removed, the panel 37 will occupy a closingl position with respect to the open side of t e casing.
When applying the brush to the casing, the
brush headis placed against the panel 37 and forced inwardly into the slot 35 thereby moving the panel '37 inwardly and the panel 36 to closing position with respect to the open side of the casing. I
From this operation it will be seenthat irrespective of whether the brushis within or without the casing 34, the open side 'of, the casing is closed to prevent passage of dust and foreign matterinto the casing. 4
As clearlyshown in Fig. 3, the casing'34 is adapted to be secured to the side of the frame. of the dispensing device, and that side of the casing 34 adjacent the dispensing frame is bent to provide a groove 39 adapted to accommodate. the adjacent end of the shaft 22 so that the roller and associated mechanism can: 'move downwardlyv to the lower end of the dispensing frame.
p f a What is. claimed is: provided with a slot 35 adapted to accommo date the shank of a tooth brush to-allow of;
A. dentifrice dispensing device comprising aframe having slots therein and an op ening adapted-to. "receive the neck of a tube, a
locking bar slidably mounted 'in certain of said slots and engaging one end of the tube to prevent curling of the latter, a shaftslid-
