Binding 46 is a strip of flexible material folded over the lower end edge 44 of the shell and over the lower edge portions of sides 42 and 43 of the cover strip 4|, the side edges 41 and 48 of binding 46 being upwardly disposed. Stitches 49, through the binding 46, cover trip and shell [5 secure the cover strip 4! and edging roll 35 to the shell.
Cover strip 4| is of a width sufficient to provide 'a retainer space 50 (see Fig. 5) between the inner upwardly disposed side edge 4! of binding 46 and the upwardly disposed edging roll 35 to receive the peripheral edge 5! of bottom member or plate 34 of the handbag. In this manner, the flexible upwardly disposed edging roll 35 is secured to the shell 15 and spaced from the binding of the bottom plate 34.
The retainer space 50 between the binding 46 l and the edging roll 35 Will securely hold bottom plate 34. Moreover, the flexible binding 46 will permit the bottom plate 34 to be inserted through the open bottom end of shell l5 without separating the shell and after the shell has been fully formed. The bottom plate34 need only to be turned and inserted edgewise into the shell and then straightened into position to seat in the re tainer space 50. The binding 48 will prevent the. plate 34 from going out the bottom of the shell and edging roll 35 will prevent the plate from moving upwardly in the shell.
The modification illustrated in Figs. 7, 8 and 9 is characterized by the provision of a shell 52 having an upper edge binding 53 and a lower edge binding 54 with an edging roll 55 secured to the shell 52 and spaced from the lower edge binding 54 a distance slightly greater than the thickness of the bottom member 56 of the handbag. No cover strip is used, the flexible sheet 57 of the edging roll 55 being folded around the flexible fibrous cord 58 and being sewn together and to the shell 52 at the same time by stitches 59.
While I have illustrated and described th preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims. Having thus described my inventionywhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In a handbag, a stiff perimetral shell having open upper and lower ends, a stiff bottom plate, a flexible binding secured to the shell at its lower end, and a flexible upwardly disposed edging roll secured to the shell and spaced from the binding a distance slightly greater than the thickness of the bottom plate to hold the plate'in the shell after it has been inserted through the lower end of the shell into the shell between'the binding and the edging roll, said edging roll being afibrous cord covered byandsecured in a strip of foldedflex le I naterial ahd another" strip offlexible material" folded over said edging roll'with edges secured together beneath the'roll. V 2.: In a handbag, a stiff perim'etral shell havingi open upper and lo'wer"ends,-'a stiff bottom plate, a flexible binding secured to thesh'ell at its lower end, and a flexible upwardly disposed edging roll secured to the shell and spaced from the binding a distance slightly greater than the thickness of the bottom plate to hold the platein the shell after it has been inserted throughthe lower endof the shell into the'shell between the binding details and the edging roll, said edging roll being a fibrous cord covered by and secured in a strip of folded flexible material and another strip of flexible material folded over said edging roll with edges securedtogether beneath the roll, said other strip of flexible material having its secured edge portions disposed beneath the bindifig on the lower end of the shell.
3. In a handbag, a stiff perimetral shell having open upper and lower ends, a stiff bottom plate, a flexible binding secured to the shell at its lower end, and a flexible upwardly disposed edging roll secured to the shell and spaced from the binding adistance slightly greater than the thickness of the bottom plate to hold the plate in the shell after it"has been inserted through the lower end of the shell into the shell between the binding and the edging roll, said edging roll being a fibrous cord witha strip of flexible thermoplastic sheeting folded over it and having edge portions secured together, and a second strip of flexible thermoplastic sheeting folded over the cord covering strip and secured thereto, said second strip having edge portions downwardly disposed adjacent the edge of the shell inside the shell at itslower end, said binding being a flexible strip of thermoplastic sheeting folded over the edge of the shell at its lower end and over said edge portions of said second strip and secured thereto.
4. In a handbag, a stiff perimetral shell having open upper and lower ends, a stiff-bottom plate, a flexible binding secured to the shell at its lower end, and a flexible upwardly disposed edging roll secured to the shell and spaced from the binding a distance slightly greater than the thickness of the bottom plate to hold the plate in the shell after it has been inserted through the lower end of the shell into the shell between the binding and the edging roll, said edging roll being a fibrous cord with a strip of flexible sheeting folded over it and having edge portions secured together, and a second strip of flexible sheeting folded over the cord covering strip and secured thereto, said second strip having edge portions downwardly disposed adjacent the edge of the shell inside the shell at its lower end, said binding being a flexible strip of sheeting folded over the edge of the shell at its lower end and over the said edge portions of said second strip and secured by stitches extending through the binding.
