The instant invention discloses a thread cutting machine which trims hanging threads or the like from a sewn garment, the machinev being of pronounced simplicity and economy relative to any prior devices of which I am aware. The machine is not only sturdy and compact but it permits adjustment of the cutter opening while employing the relatively heavy motor as a handhold member and a stabilizing element and while further insuring the maintenance of a suction in the housing thereof notwithstanding variations in adjustment. Means are further provided to facilitate assembly and disassembly of the housing as well as the adjustment of the cutter opening in two perpendicularly related directions, these being accomplished by novel, effective and simple means. In addition, a simplified and effective means of adjusting the degree -of vacuum employed to suck cutthreads from the garments into a depository therefor is provided as is means for directing such cut threads into the depository. Y j The machine which will be hereinafter described and which incorporates the improvements above mentioned, not only performs its duties'as well or better than prior devices, but reduces the cost thereof to a considerable' and gratifying degree.

Wall 40 is formed with a peripheral slot 4l in which is disposed alive rubber gasket 42. It will be noted that gasket 42 is of greater width than the depth of slot 4| so that when wall 40 is inserted in a housing 22, the gasket folds over to enhance its sealing function by being pinched betweeen wall 40 and housing 22.
End wall 40 is formed with a central opening 45 through which extends sleeve 46 which is connected as by screw 41 to shaft 48 of the motor 32; Thus sleeve 46 rotates pursuant to the operation of motor 32. A screw 49, operating through sleeve 45, secures pin 49a eccentrically' on the front end face of sleeve 481 Thus,.rotation of sleeve 48 causes eccentric pin 49a to revolve as will be evident. Pin 49a is disposed' between parallel stationary pins which areconnected to pivoted lever arm' 5I'. Lever arm 5l comprises the operating arm of the cutter assembly and it is pivoted to the wall 32a of bracket 30-at the pivot pin 52. A-washer 53 provides clearance between wall 32u and lever arm 5l and a collar 54, secured to pin 52 maintains the lever arm 5I secured and rotatably mounted on pin 52.
Lever arm 5l isfformed with a dog 60 at its front end which is received iny a slot of movable cutter blade 6|. The cutter assembly includes leaf spring 62 for holding movable cutter blade 6| in position, and a stationary cutter blade 63. Movable cutter blade 6I is slidably maintained against the stationary cutter blade 63 by the leaf spring 62 so that these parts are handled as a unit. A folded supporting member 64 is mounted on the front end 65 of the bracket 3U and a bolt 66,.extending through plate 61, secures the cutter head to the front end of bracket 30.
Essentially the cutter operates by reciprocation, through dog 6B, of the movable toothed cutte'r blade 6l which cuts threads against the stationary toothed cutter blade 63. Toothed plate 21 is connected across the front open end of housing 22 adjacent to the stationary cutter blade E3` and serves as a guide for the thread cutter as Well as to determine the'width of the cutter opening between the plate 21 and the cutter head or assembly per se.
Assembly of the apparatus is effected by insert-V ing the bracket 30 into the rear open end of housing 22 until the rear wall 40 encloses such open end. The gasket 42 serves as an air seal at this point. Such insertion will also bring the cutter assembly into position at the front open end of housing 22 and'vvhere its cutter teeth are properly adjacent the teeth of guideV plate 21. Bracket 3l)l is secured to the oor of housing 22 by bolts ''operating inv slots 16. By this means, the bracket 3B is capable of longitudinal adjustment relative to the housing 22. The purpose thereof is to alford a longitudinal adjustment'between the cutter head and the toothed guide plate 21. In this manner the cutteropeningmay be varied longitudinally as well as laterally as above described. The purpose in permitting sucha variation-is to permit adjustment of the cutter opening in accordancel with individual preferhands and then shifting the bracket and motor' bodily until the cutter head is in the proper posi-Y tion whereupon the' bolts 15' may be tightened in their slots 16. The heavy motor thus serves as a stabilizing element in accomplishing proper positioning of the bracket and of the cutter assembly mounted thereon. The thickness of rear or end wall 40 is considerable as illustrated so that the required adjustment of the bracket 30 in housing 22 may be made without destroying the effective air tight nature of housing 22. Thus, the thickness of wall 40 should be as great or greater than the length of slots 16.
The height of' the machine may be adjusted by loosening the set screws 11 on the collar 18 which embraces the standard 20.
The operation of the instant apparatus will be evident from the above description. Briefly, the'angular bracket 30 having been suitably longitudinally adjusted and the bolts 15 tightened when the proper longitudinal extent of the cutter openinghas been set, the plate 21 may then be laterally adjusted to achieve the desired lateral width' ofy the cutter opening. Such adjustment may depend on the type* of' garment material or threads, or the individual preference ofthe oper'- ator. The vacuum apparatus 23" is then put into operation in order to produce a vacuum in the housing 22. A thread cutting machine comprising a rectangular open ended housing, a bracket maintained Within said housing, a toothed guide plate mounted on the front open end of said housing and partially enclosing said front end, a cutter blade assembly mounted on the front end of said bracket so as to be normally adjacent said guide plate and forming a cutter opening therebetween, 'said toothed guide plate being laterally adjustable on said housing front end so as to correspondingly vary said cutter opening, said bracket being longitudinally adjustable relative to said housing so as to correspondingly longitudinally vary said cutter opening, and a motor for operating said cutter blade assembly mounted on the rear end of `said bracket and externally of said housing, said motor being adapted to be grasped by the hand for facilitating longitudinal adjustment of said bracket relative to said housing, and means to tighten said bracket relative to said housing.

A machine according to claim 3 and wherein said housing is formed with an opening in a Wall thereof, said housing being formed With a second opening in another Wall thereof, means for applying a Vacuum through said second opening so as to produce a Vacuum through said housing, and a slidable plate adjacent to said first-named opening for variably covering said first-named opening to adjust the Adegree of vacuum through said housing.

A thread cutting machine comprising a housing, a cutter blade assembly disposed at one end of said housing for cutting threads applied thereto, said housing having an opening in a wall thereof adapted to have a suction applied therethrough so as to produce a vacuum in said housing for drawing cut threads therethrough, motor means including a rotatable sleeve and motive transmission means Within said housing for operating said cutter blade assembly, a fitting on a Wall of said housing and adapted to have lubricating oil applied therethrough for lubricating said motive transmission means, and a well disposed below said motive transmission means and said ltting for receiving excess oil, said Well having a front wall adjacent to and ldeiining the rear Wall of said suction opening whereby sucked in cut threads are guided by said well front wall into said opening.

A thread cutting machine comprising an elongated housing having front and rear open ends, an elongated L-shaped bracket maintained within said housing, a thread cutter blade assembly mounted at one end of said bracket and disposed in the front open end of said housing, said bracket being longitudinally adjustable relative to said housing so as to vary the longitudinal position of 'said thread cutter blade assembly relative to said housing front open end, and a rear wall formed on said bracket and embraced by the rear open end of said housing, said rear Wall having a peripheral slot formed therein, and a gasket disposed in said slot, said gasket being Wider than said slot and being bent over so as to be embraced between the periphery of said rear Wall and said housing, the thickness of said rear wall being greater than the extent of adjustment permitted between said housing and said bracket.
