Be it known that I, GEORGE P. BOURDELAT,-
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Aberdeen, in the county of Moore and State of North Carolina, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hair-Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
One of the principal objectsfof my invention is to provide an improved machine,
designed especially for cutting or trimming hair on the human head, in which means is provided for rapidly and evenly cutting the hair, in a manner most comfortable to a person whose hair is being cut, and for conveying all of the cut hair together with Whatever dandrufi' may be loosened to a so that none of the cut hair will fall from the head onto'the clothing of the person.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved hair cutting device, the use of which isattended by advantages of coolness and comfort to the person whose hair is being cut and by advantages of sanitation not ordinarily acquired in machines of this character.
A still further object of my invention is to provide an improved hair cutting machine, in which a rotary cutter is driven by an electrical motor and serves to cut the hair, means also being operable by the motor for drawing the cut hair away from the head and for directing it into a proper receptacle.
A still further object of my invention is to provide an improved .hair cutting machine which will be extremely simple, durable, efiicient in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, which will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein Figure 1 represents a view in section taken longitudinally through a hair cutting mahine constructed in accordance with my invention; 7

In carrying out my invention, I provide a cylindrical casing consisting of the segments 5 and 6 respectively, the segment 6 being provided with an internally threaded flange 7 into which the externally threaded inner end of the segment 5 screws, as indicated in Fig. 1, whereby the segments are detachably connected together.
Mounted within the segment 6 is an electrical motor 8 of suitable design, to which the cable 9 for supplying current is connected. This cable reaches the motor through a suitably positioned opening 10 provided in the side wall of the cylinder. A perforated cover is threaded into place on the cylinder as shown, and it carries an adjusting screw 12 secured in place on the outer face of thecap 11 by means of a strap 13 riveted or otherwise connected at 14: to the cap. This screw 12 is internally threaded and screwed into engagement with it is a threaded stem 15 extending axially of the motor 8. This sleeve 15 extends out through an opening in the cover 11, as shown. Thus, it will follow that when the screw 12 is turned in one direction or another the motor 8 will be shifted bodily longitudinally of the segment 6 in one direction or another therein. In order that the motor 8 may be properly positioned in the segment 6 and held accidental displacement,
face with a series of spaced ribs or ridges 16, against which the bands 17 of the motor gaging the length of the a plurality casing rest. The motor is free to slide longitudinally of the ribs under the influence of I the screw 12, as thelatter is manually turned whereby the motor may be adjusted, as before set out, and in order to prevent accidental rotation of the motor casing, the bands 17 may atone or more points where they intersect the ribs 16 be notched or recessed whereby to engageupon the ribs in such a manner as to preventthe motor casing slipping or rotating around inside the segment 6. l
A shaft 18 driven directly by the motor 8 extends axially through the cylinder segment 5 and mounted on the shaft 18 is a. fan 19. The latter includes a hub 20 which slidably engages upon the shaft 18 and which carries a set screw or other suitable device 21 whereby the fan may be adjusted in desirable position longitudinally 'of the said shaft 18.
The-outer end ofthe shaft 18 is journaled in a-bearing 22 formed at the hub orcenter of a stationary cutting blade indicated gen-- erally at 23. This cutting blade is preferably formed'integrally with an internally threaded ring 24 which ring screws into the internally threaded outer end of'the cylin-fl der segment 5. Adjustably mounted on the shaft 18 inwardly ofthe stationary cutter blade 23.and held in ad usted vposition on the shaft by means-of a set screw-or other suitable device 25, is a rotary cutteryindicated generally at 26. This cutter includes a plurality of radiating cutting knives 27 connected at their outer ends by rims 2 8.
The stationary cutter 23 similarly includes of radiating cutter blades or knives 29. The blades or knives 27 and 29 are preferably made triangular in shape as indicated in Fig. 8. The cutting edges 30 of'the blades 27 are adaptedtogpass across the cutting edges of the stationary blades'29 1 as indicated so that a clean sharp cut canbe made. Y e I In order that correct adjustment between the rotary and stationary blades may be at;
tained, the stationary blade may be man-f ually rotated in one direction or another and hence will be either drawn toward the rountil tary blade or moved away therefrom the proper adjustment, isac'quired. If-desired, the stationary blade may be left undisturbed and adjustment between the rotaryand stationary blades be obtained by turning the screw 12 in one direction or another thus bodily shifting the motor together with its shaft 18 and rotary blade into the correct position.
The cylinder segment 6 is provided with a transversely extending partition or balfle 31 having a curved upper portion 32, whose function it .is to direct the cut hair out through an outlet spout or nipple 33 into a suitable tube 34, from whence it is directed by the blades and will also serve to keep the head of the person cool so that the, operation of cutting the hair will be attended with a maximum degree of comfort.
The modifiedform of stationary cutter, shown in Figs. 1 and 5, is similar to the stationary cutter already described in that it includes a ring, 2 1 and radial blades 29. The method of operation of the cutting blades is the same as already set out. The modified form of stationary cutter is characterized by the fact that it carries on its outer surface a plurality of comb teeth, indicated at 35, which project outwardly from the end of'the ring 24: and from the outer faces of the blades 29*. These comb teeth are adapted to retain the cutter at a pre-' determined distance from the surface of the head, so that the length of the hair to be uncut may be determined, isindicated in Figs. 6 and 7, and. includes a sleeve 36 internally threaded whereby to turn upon the outer externally threaded end of the cylinder segment 5.
This gage sleeve '36 at its outer end carries the cross strips or. bars 37 adapted to bear against. the surface of the L termined distance therefrom. The gage sleeve by being turned in one direction or another will bring the cross bars or arms preferred headso as to retain. the cutter at a prede combination and arrangement of parts as do not depart from the 'spiritof the invention orthe scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1'. A hair cutting device, including a cylinder having a stationary cutter adjustably mounted near one end, a motor adjustably mounted in the cylinder, a cap .on the opposite end of the cylinder, cohperating means between the cap and motor whereby the latter may be slidably adjusted within the cylinder, a shaft operable by the motor and having a bearing in the stationary cutter, a rotary cutter carried by the shaft cooperating with the stationary cutter and adjustable relatively thereto as the said motor is adjusted, an'o'utlet spout formed on the cylinder, a tube connecting said spout with a receptacle, a baflie arranged in the cylinder for directing materialv through the outlet spout, and a fan mounted on the shaft for creating a current of air into the cylinder through the stationary cutter and out through the outlet spout.
2. A hair cutting device including a cas ing having a rotary cutter mounted therein and including a plurality of radial cutting blades, a ring adjustably mounted on the casing, a stationary cutter carried by the ring adjustable relatively to the rotary cutter upon adjustment of the ring and including radial blades cooperating with the blades of the rotary cutter, and means for driving the rotary cutter.
3. A hair cutting device, including a cylinderhaving a motor adj ustably mounted therein, a cutter mounted in the cylinder including a blade movable bodily with the motor, a cap carried by the cylinder, a threaded stem carried by the motor extending through said cap, and an adjusting screw mounted on the cap exteriorly thereof and engaging the stem whereby the motor may be adjusted in the cylinder for adjusting the blade.

A hair cutting device, including a cylinder having a stationary cutter mounted thereon, means whereby said stationary cutter may be adjusted relatively to the cylinder, a motor mounted in the cylinder, a rotary cutter adapted to be driven by said motor and movable bodily with the motor, and means whereby the motor may be adjusted whereby to adjust the rotary cutter relatively to the stationary cutter.
5. The combination in a hair cutting device, of a cylinder having a rotary cutter mounted therein, a stationary cutter adjustably mounted on the cylinder and cooperating with the rotary cutter, and a cylindrical gage adjustably mounted on the cylinder and having means for engaging the surface of the head to determine the length of hair to be'left uncut.
6. In a hair cutting device, a casing having a motor mounted adjustably therein, means operable from without the casing for adjusting the motor relatively to the casing, a cutter carried by the casing, and a rotary cutter mounted for movement with the motor cooperating with the first-said cutter, said rotary cutter being adjustable relatively to the first-said cutter through adjustment of the motor.
