Description
Filed Sept. 5, 1947 INVENTOR.
if. Flli JACOB M. FIELD Patented Nov. 24, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FORM FOR TEXTILE MATERIAL OR THE LIKE The present invent on comprises a new artiole of manufacture particularly adapted for use in the display or packaging of sheet material such as textile material that is sold or delivered in relatively long lengths of constant width. The new article comprise a structure that may be readily assembled into a sturdy framework or form about which sheet material may be wrapped as on a board.
As compared to articles heretofore in use in the textile industry for the same or similar purpose, the article of the present invention may be produced at substantially less cost and is lighter in weight.
The new article is entirely composed of foldable material, such as cardboard, and is readily assembled by folding blanks of the material along scored lines thereon. Thus, a plurality of the articles before assembly can be conveniently stored or shipped as blanks thus saving shipping space.
As forms or boards upon which textile or other material is wound are ordinarily used but once and then discarded, it is important that the cost thereof be low. It is also important that their construction be such that they do not collapse or become distorted under the weight of the material wrapped about them.
The article of the present invention is so constructed as to meet both these requirements. Also storage and shipping space is conserved when the articles are stacked before assembly.
For a better understanding of the invention,
reference may be had to the accompanying drawing of which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a form embodying the invention and comprising an outer cover member and an inner brace member;
Fig. 2 is a plan view, on a reduced scale, of a scored blank from which the brace member of Fig. 1 may be assembled by folding;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the brace member of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view illustrating an alternative construction of brace member for use with the outer cover member of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a scored blank foldable into the brace member of Fig. 4.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Fig. 1, the outer cover member is indicated at 2 and inner brace member at 4. Member 2 may be of conventional box type construction. The dimensions of member 2 will depend upon the particular material with which the article is to be used, but the depth thereof will be relatively shallow and the width substantially less than the length; the shape of the member generally approximating that of a board. Member 2, in the particular embodiment of the invention illustrated in i as e 9 1 9 4 Wall 6, s d walls 2 8, a to wall formed of sections [0 and Illa adhesively secured together at their overlapping edges and end walls l2 each provided with a flap 12a underlying the top wall. A tab or tongue l4 on each end of the top wall section I0 extends over the adjacent end wall l2 and into a slot l6 in the fold between the bottom and end walls and serves to keep the end wall in position while permitting retraction thereof for access to the interior of the member 2. Member 2 may be readily assembled from a single scored blank as will be apparent to those skilled in the art. Any other conventional construction which permits access through either or both ends of the member 2 could be used in the article of Fig. l.
The inner or brace member 4 comprises a base portion l8 having integrally joined thereto a four walled structure comprising interlocked strips and 22, each of a height substantially equal to the depth of member 2, and side walls 24 which are integral with the base portion l8 and which terminate in strips 26 underlying the top wall Ill-46a of the outer member. described construction of the brace member 4,
the structure formed by the strips 20 and 22 provides reinforcement for the central portion of member 2 and prevents collapse or distortion thereof. The base portion [8 provides additional rigidity crosswise of the member 2 and the side walls 24 reinforce the side walls of the article.
The brace member 4, can be readily introduced into member 2 from either end thereof and pushed into the generally central position shown in Fig. 1.
The entire brace member 4 is formable from the single blank 28 shown in Fig. 2. The side walls 24 and strips 26 are formed by folding the blank 28 along score or fold lines 30 and 32.
along lines 36 to form the free edges of the strips, along lines 38 forming continuations of fold lines 40 along which the strips remain joined to the basewhen pushed up from the blank and along lines 42 joining the termini of lines 36 and 38 To provide interlocking means for the strips 20 and 22 small and forming the ends of the strips.
