It should also be noted that because the cam member y58 is driven 4from the worm wheel half 5B, While the eccentric 68 is driven from the other worm lwheel half 51, there will .be a continuous phase variation imposed on the cam 58 and eccentric B8 as a result of the differential tooth arrangement employed for the worm wheel halves 56 and 51. The effect of this arrangement is to provide a continuous variation of the stroke imparted to the traverse motion by the combined action of the cam 58 and eccentric 68 and thereby avoid the delivery at the take-up rolls I8 of the twisted yarn for rewinding in successive layers with the windings laid directly upon one another, as previously mentioned.
The manner in which the drive shaft 66 from the traverse motion assembly 4l is connected to operate the traverse bars 24 is illustrated in Figs. 11 and 12, the drive shaft -Gbeing sh-own extending on both sides of the traverse motion assembly 4I to carry pulley members 16 from which flexible tapes 1,1', formed of metal or the like, are extended to -anchor brackets 'I8 on the traverse bars 24. Operation of the traverse motion assembly 4| on a working stroke results in rotating the drive shaft 6B to cause the pulley members I6 to wind up the tapes 'I1 and thereby move the traverse .bars to the left as seen in Fig. 12. The bias by which the traverse bars 24 are moved in the other direction during each return strokeV of the traverse motion assembly 4| is obtained from springs as at 19 extended from further anchor brackets 80 on the traverse bars 2-4 to 'any convenient anchor point on the frame structure for `the yarn winding machine asindicated in Fig. 12

A traverse motion for a yarn winding machine, said traversetmotion comprising a driven shaft, a yoke member slidably disposed'on saidLsl-iaft, `a iirsti gearyelement carried 'by said yoke member for rotation by said driven shaft about an axis transverse thereto, a traverse actuating cam disposed for rotation on a common axis with said first gear element, a second gear element carried by said yoke memberl for rotation by said driven shaft on a common axis with but at a differential speed in relation to said first gear element, an eccentric disposed for rotation on a common axis with said second gear element, and a stationary reaction means engaging said eccentric and thereby imparting a sliding motion to said yoke member on said driven shaft, whereby the action of said cam is supplemented by said eccentric as a result of the sliding motion of said yoke member and a continuous phase variation is imposed on said cam and eccentric as a result of the differential speeds at which said first and second gear elements are rotated by said driven shaft.

A traverse motion for a yarn Winding machine, said traverse motion comprising a driven shaft, a yoke member slidably disposed on said shaft, a rst gear element carried by said yoke member for rotation by said driven shaft, a. traverse actuating cam disposed for rotation about a common axis with said rst gear element, a second gear element carried by said yoke member for rotation about said common axis by said driven shaft at a differential speed in relation to said first gear element, an eccentric disposed for rotation about said common axis with. said sec` ond gear element, stationary reaction means for engaging said eccentric and thereby imparting a sliding motion to said yoke member on said driven shaft, said eccentric being engaged by said reaction means in an elongated slot having a Width corresponding to the diameter of said eccentric, and adjustable means for selectively positioning said reaction means and thereby adjusting the longitudinal axis of said slot in relation to the direction of sliding motion of said yoke eccentric.

In a yarn winding machine, the combination with a plurality ofcommonly driven yarn takeup rolls and a corresponding plurality of yarn guide means arranged on a common mounting for traversing motion in relation to said take-up rolls, of a traverse motion comprising a pulley `member aligned with said common mounting for rotation on an axis transverse thereto, an extending tape element connected from said common mounting to said pulley member, a traverse cam and an eccentric mounted for rotation about a common axis parallel to the axis of said pulley member and for sliding movement transverse thereto in a direction aligned with the traversing motion of said common mounting, said traverse of said traverse cam.

means biasing said common guide means mounting for movement to unwind said tape element from said pulley member during the return stroke MORRIS. M. WALDROP.
