MALcoLM P. RASC-O Oct. 1953 M. P.- RASCO SECTIONAL BOX WRENCH Filed Feb. 2, 1951 Patented Oct. 27, 1 953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SECTIONKL BOX WRENCH- M-alco'lm: P.-Rasc0, Port Arthur, Tex. Application February 2, 1951, Serial.N'. 209,120
Claims; 1
This invention relates to a wrench, and more particularly toa box typesectional wrench.
An object of the invention is to provide a box type wrench wherein the head embodies two sec tionsmovable relative withrespect to eachother.
Another object of the invention is to provide a box type Wrench wherein the head embodies two sections, one of said sections-being fixed and the other section being movable toward and away from the fixed section.
Another object of the invention is to provide a box type wrench wherein there is provided a positive locking means for looking the two sections of the head'together when the sectionsh'ave' been moved toclosed position.
The above and still further objectsan'd advan tages of the present invention will become apparent upon consideration of the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is atop plan view of a sectional box type wrench constructed according tothe present invention, with parts-broken-away and shown in section; I
Figure 2' is. a side elevational view or: the sectional box type-wrench of the present-invention, shown in aupositionifor placement on" a screw fitting of a flexible tubing; i
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken along the 1ine=3 --'3 of Figure 1-; and
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken along the line 4 -41 of Figure 1 Referring now more particularly tothe draw ings, wherein like reference numerals have been used throughout the several views to designate like parts; there is shownthe sectional box type wrench of the present invention, generally designated by thev reference numeral l0; which includes an elongated shank H and sectional box type head's t2" and 13 carriedcontiguou's to'each end of the shank. Since=each of the'head's I? and i3 is of a likestructure; it will sufllce to describe only one in detail.
The head l2 embodies a mounting plate 15 which projects from the adjacent end of the shank II' and is formed integrally with the shank, or secured thereto. Formed on the mounting head or secured thereto is. an arcuate, fixed jaw it which projects from the mounting plate l5. Arranged in aclosed position i'nfaceto-face relation with respect to the. fixed jaw it is a movable jaw [.1 which is mounted on: the listed jaw for swinging movementfrom-the closed position to an open position. spaced from the fixed jaw and illustrated in phantom in Figure 2 1 The jaws P6 and [1, which are of the*sa'me a-rcuate length, are pivota'lly connected together bymeanso'f spaced ears l t-and IQ formedi-cone tiguous to one end of the movablejaw I 1", an car 20 formed integrally with or secured to" the adjacent end of the fixed jaw H53 anda pivot pin 2I= straddling the" ears Hi to 2 9; inehis-ive: I
Asclearly shown" in Figures 1- and 4; the end faces=of the jaws iEand H remote'fi'om thepivot pin 2| abut" and con-front each other'in the closed position of the fixed and movablejaws. The-"end face of the movable jaw I! is provided with: a projecting lug 22 which is receivable within a complementary recess 23? provided in: the adjacent end face of the jaw lo when the jaws-r are in'th'e closed position of- Figure 1.
Projecting: outwardly from the movable jaw I? is a shoulder 24: which is receivablewithin a complementary seat 2ft provided in the mountiing plate Hi upon movement of the movable jaw H: into the close position. The shoulder 24 is provided with a slot 28 andthe' mounting plate 15 is provided with a slot 2?, the slots" 2-1 and 26 cooperating with' each other in: the closed po= sition of the jaws to define an elongatedtclosede ended channelway 28. Arranged: within the channelway 28' is a latch 29 which: hasone: end received within the" slot 26 of. the shoulder 21 and has the: other end receivable within the slot 21 of the: mounting plate' [2-5; Extending" transversely ofthe end of the latch 29 received within the slot is a pivot pin' 3B which engages adja cent portions of theshoulder Zt'and mountslth'e latch for pivotal movement from a. non-locking position exteriorly' of the: slot 27 of" the: mount! ing plate l 5- toa locking position therein. As clearly shown in Figure 3', the latch piece 29: is provided with: an upwardly projecting: finger piece 31 and a downwardly projecting finger piece 32 which can be manually engaged toeffect pivotal movement of the latch from the locking position within the channelway to a non locking position wherein the movable jaw IT is free to swing tothe open position illustrated in phantomin Figure 1.
A 5 clearl'yillustrated in Figure 3; the end of the latch 29 contiguous to a terminating" end wall 33' of the slot 26- is provided with an in'- wardly extending socket 3-l which-mounts'aball 35, the ball 35' being biased by a spring 3% into engagement witha detent depression 38'p rovided' in the end terminating wall 33' ofthe' slot 26; The spring biased ball 35 accordingly facilitates releasable securement of the latch 2-9 in the locking positionin the slots 26' and 21;
As clearly illustrated in Figure 1, the fixed and movable jaws l and I! cooperate to define a closed socket 31. The socket may be of any design, so that any socket formation can be employed in accordance with the use to which the wrench is going to be put. Also, the socket of the head i3 can likewise be formed in accordance with the needs of the user. It is to be noted that the fitting engaging faces of the socket 37, generally designated by the reference numeral are triangularly notched to form gripping teeth for gripping the fitting to be loosened or tightened.
In actual use, the latch 29 is moved out of the locking position illustrated in Figure 3, permitting the movable jaw H to swing to the broken line position illustrated in Figure 1. As clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2, the wrench head l2 can then be engaged about a flexible tubing 48, and the movable jaw swung to the closed position of Figure 1, whereupon the latch 29 can be once again moved into the locked position. The wrench is then moved longitudinally of the tubing 40 and engaged about the fitting 4|, whereupon the fitting can be turned to loosen or tighten the fitting.
Although only one embodiment of the wrench 0f the present invention has been described, it is readily apparent that numerous modifications can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
