Description

W. F. HELWIG GARMENT HANGER Oct. 20, 1953 Filed Feb. 15, 1951 INVENTOR William F: Helwz'q BY 56. A3
ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 20, 1953 U NITE D- STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,656,079 GARMENT HANGER William F. Helwig, Milwaukee, Wis.
Original application September 16, 1948, Serial N0.- 49,4 February 27, 1951.
This invention relates to a new and novel trouser hanger shown in my original application Serial No. 49,470, now Patent No. 2,543,108, and divided therefrom.
One of the objects of this invention resides in the provision of a trouser hanger adapted to be locked in trouser gripping position by the hanger lock rod thereof.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a trouser hanger adapted to yieldingly grip opposite sides of the cuffs of trousers subsequen' to releasing the hanger lock rod thereof from; ooking position.
A further object of this invention resides in the combination of the pivoted jaws of the trouser hanger and hanger lock rod.
A still further object of this invention resides 70, now Patent No. 2,543,108, dated Divided and this application February 13, 1951, Serial'No. 210,740
in the particular construction of the trouser gripping jaws and hanger lock rod thereof.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of elements to be hereinafter more particularly set forth in the specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims and, although this disclosure depicts my present conception of the invention, the right is reserved to resort to such departures therefrom as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the trouser hanger showing the hanger lock rod thereof in locking position by full lines and unlocked position by a dotted line.
Fig. 2 is an end view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken approximately on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken approximately on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross sectional view taken approximately on line 5--5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the hanger lock rod per se.
In the present illustration of this invention, the numeral 5 designates, in general, a trouser hanger formed of metal or other suitable material and consists of substantially U-shaped companion members 6 and I pivoted together, as indicated by the numeral 8 in opposed relation and having certain portions of their opposed upper edges cut out to form an enlarged opening 9 communicating with a smaller opening l0 disposed in the upper portion of said members and separated from said larger opening by opposed lugs I2,
2 Claims. (Cl. 223-96) Formed on the lower ends of the aforesaid companion members are laterally converging arms [3 which merge into opposed parallel trouser cuff gripping jaws I4 having their inner surfaces provided with grooves IE to ensure a secure grip of the trouser cuffs. However, it is within the purview of this invention to otherwise roughen the opposed surfaces of the pads. Said arms and trouser cuif gripping jaws being formed as set forth permits the intermediate portions of the trouser cuffs to be tightly suspended between the gripping jaws l4.
Pivotally secured to opposed inner sides of the aforesaid companion members above the pivot thereon, as shown by the letter A, is a lock rod I! provided with oppositely extended loops l8 around which is disposed an expansion coil spring I9 adapted to exert pressure on a shank 20 formed on said lock rod against the side walls 2| of the opening I 0 to force the jaws l 4 inwardly toward one another and into tight gripping engagement with the trouser cuffs as heretofore set forth. Said shank merges into a hanging hook 22 formed by folding that strand of wire from which the locking rod is constructed upon itself at its medial portion.
Although the companion members and arms with the gripping jaws formed thereon are herein shown as being formed of plain metal, it is within the purview of this invention to strengthen the same by stamping or otherwise forming ribs or other known reinforcing means thereon commonly utilized for such purpose.
With this invention fully set forth, it is manifest that a trouser hanger is provided whereby but a small area of the cuifs of a pair of trousers is gripped to suspend them therefrom and, through the particular construction of the cooperating elements set forth, pressure of the gripping jaws is released by swinging the locking rod from normal or operative position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A trouser hanger comprising companion members pivotally connected together and having substantially flat upper portions with their opposed inner edges cut out to form small and large openings adjacent one another, opposed lugs formed on the opposed inner edges of the companion members disposed between said openings, a locking rod pivoted to opposite inner sides of the companion members and having laterally extending portions bearing against the inner edges of the upper flat portions of said members, opposed loops formed on the laterally extending portions of the locking rod and slidably disposed against one another, an expansion coil spring surrounding said loops and yieldingly retaining the laterally extending portions of the locking rod against the opposed walls of the small and large openings, a hook formed on the outer end of the locking rod; and tro'iiser 'grippirig jaws formed'on the lower portionsof the-com panion members and yieldingly directed toward one another by said coil spring. 7
2. A trouser hanger comprising companion members pivoted together and having sm'sstam" tially flat upper portions extending toward ofie another with their inner opposed edges cut out to form small and large operfifigs adiiarcent'ofie another, lugs formed on the dppbs'ed' innef edge;
of the flat upper portions o'i'tlicompanion members between the small and large openings,
a locking rod including a hook on its Qtit'eFend and laterally extending portions inwardly thereof slidably resting against the opposedwalls of 4 said small opening when in locking position therein, means pivotally connecting the inner end of the locking rod to opposite inner sides of the companion members, inwardly extending loops formed on said laterally extending portions of tlie lockirigrdd and '"slidably= bearing" against one another; an expansion spring siirrounding said loops and exerting outward pressure against the laterally extending portions of the locking rod, and trouser cuff gripping jaws formed" on the lower edges of the companion members WILLIAM F. HELWIG.
