This invention relates to a collar stay for supporting the wings of a soft collar in proper position.

The object of the invention is to provide a collar stay which may be made without the use of a machine and at a comparatively low cost yet durable and satisfactory in use.

With these and other objects in view, the in vention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In carrying out my invention I make use of a strip I0 of a pliable material which is for curling hair. The strip III is tapered at each end, as shown in Figure 4, and comprises a metallic core I I shown in Figure 3 which is made of a malleable metal. This core II has braided or otherwise provided thereon a tubular covering I2 which tightly embraces the said core II. The braid may be made of any suitable material usually used for this purpose, such as natural or synthetic fibers as cotton, rayon, or other material suitable for such use. This strip I0 is severed in half, providing two similar portions I3 tapered at one end as at I4 and which portions provide a pair of stay member bodies I6.

A collar-engaging pointed element I1 shown in Figure 10 has the non-pointed end portion thereof bent or turned at right angles as shown to provide a head I8 or the said head may be provided by bending the end portion into a T formation or upset as in a common pin as shown at I8 in Figure 8. One such element is inserted between the core and the said braided. material so as to position the pointed end thereof beyond each end extremity of the body I6. The element I 4which is positioned at the tapered end of the body I6 extends beyond the end extremity to a greater extent than the element Il at the other end of the body I. In inserting the element II in place between the core and the braid, the head I8 will provide a limiting abutment upon insertion by engaging the material at the point of insertion of said element therethrough.

In inserting the element II between the braid and the core, the braid will be additionally tensioned and tightly hold the element I'I onto the core to secure said element in place. The element is further secured in position by means of a narrow band 29 which may be an adhesive tape of a cellulose material which is wrapped about the body to engage and enclose the said head I8 of the element.

In applying the collar stay in place the tapered end portion thereof is positioned beneath the collar 2I at the pointed ends 22 thereof. The element I1 at this tapered end is inserted into the seam of the collar to provide a secure attachment thereto and the element I'I' at the other end of the stay is inserted into the inner layer or facing 23 of the collar and is prevented from penetrating the outer layer of the collar by means of the end 24 of the body engaging against the said facing.

I claim:

l. A collar stay comprising an elongated member having a fiat strip relatively stili core with a textile fabric covering tightly embracing said core, a collar-engaging pointed element at the end portion of said member with its point extending beyond the member and located. between said covering and core in secure frictional engagement therewith, said element having a head positioned outwardly of the covering, and a narrow band tightly encircling said member and said element at the location of said head for additionally securing the said element in place.

2. A collar stay as set forth in claim 1 wherein said covering is a braided tubular fabric.

A collar stay `comprising an elongated member having a fiat strip metal core tapered at one end, a. braided tubular textile fabric tightly embracing said core, a collar-engaging headed element having a pointed end and extending between said covering and core in secure frctional engagement therewith, with the head of said element positioned outwardly of said covering and in engagement therewith and the pointed end of said element extending beyond the end of said member, and an adhesive tape encircling said mem-V 4 bei' at the portion thereof containing the head of said element for securing the said element in place.
