This invention relates to a chest of drawers removably mounted on a bed frame underneath the spring so as not to interfere with the conventional use of the bed.

In accordance with the present invention the chest of drawers comprises a unit that may be quickly and readily secured in place under the spring and supported by brackets mounted on the legs of the foot board. The body of the foot board is recessed to provide a cut out portion which facilitates the proper positioning of the chest of drawers unit and permits opening ofthe individual drawers. The chest of drawers is particularly advantageous in connection with hospital beds and beds in institutions generally, because it provides facilities for storing clothes or linens without taking any extra space in addition to that required for the bed itself, and because it may be so easily removed for cleaning purposes. It will be understood, however, that the use of the chest of drawers unit is not limited to hospital and institutional beds, for the saving of space the unit affords when removably mounted on a bed frame in accordance with the present invention is extremely desirable in small homes or apartments where closet space is at a premium.

The structure by which the above noted and other advantages of the invention are attained will be described in the following specification, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings showing a preferred illustrative embodiment, in which:

Figure l is a fragmentary perspective view of the foot end of a bed showing a chest of drawers unit removably mounted on the foot board of the bed in accordance with the invention;

Fig. 9 is a fragmentatry cross sectional view along the line 9-9 of Fig. 8 showing the bumper structure which cushions the closing movement of the drawers.

In the drawings, the reference numeral 2 indicates the foot board of a bed, for example, a hospital bed. The foot board has a pair of spaced legs 3. The body of the foot board is recessed to provide a out out portion 4 between the legs. The bed is also provided with a head board (not shown), similar to foot board 2. Either board may be provided with a recess 4 so that the chest of drawers may be positioned adjacent either end of the bed or both ends, if desired. A bracket 5 A pair of brackets I is mounted on each leg 3 beneath bracket 5 and in vertical alignment therewith. Each bracket 'i has an upturned arm 3 spaced from the leg to provide a notch 9 for the reception of studs IIl projecting laterally from the sides of a housing II adjacent its front end. The pair of brackets l at each end furnish the only support needed for the housing which ts under the spring i3 adjacent the cut out portion 4.

The housing comprises a bottom I2, side walls I3, a rear wall I4, and a top I5. The forward ends of the side walls are bent inwardly at right angles, as indicated at IS, and then rearwardly to form flanges Il extending parallel to side walls I3 and spaced therefrom. The forward end of the bottom is bent upwardly, as indicated at I5, and then inwardly to form a rearwardly extending flange I9 extending parallel to bottom I2 and spaced therefrom. The forward end of top I5 is bent downwardly, as indicated at 2B, and then inwardly to form a rearwardly extending flange 2| parallel to the top of housing II and spaced therefrom. The flanges Il, I9 and 2| define the opening through which the drawers are inserted and also reinforce the forward end of the housing to impart rigidity to the portions of the housing surrounding the opening. The cross sectional area of the chest of drawers is of less magnitude than the recess 4 so that the chest of drawers may be inserted readily through said recess.

Each rear corner of the housing is reinforced by a vertically extending yangle iron 22. A pair of vertically spaced cross bars 23 extends horizontally across each side wall I3 and each cross bar has one of its ends secured to angle iron 22 by welding or any other suitable means. The other ends of each cross bar 23 are rigidly secured in any suitable manner to one of the flanges Il'. A tubular bar 24 has its opposite ends secured to the upper cross bars 23. An upper metal strip has one end supported on tubular bar 24 and its'other end supported on a bracket 25 rigidly secured to rear wall I4. Another metal strip 25 positioned adjacent the bottom of the housing is supported by a bracket 26 secured to rear wall I4 and a similar bracket 25 secured to flange I9.

The upper metal strip 25 has a pair of raised ribs 21 which supports an intermediate bottom portion of upper drawer 28. Ribs 21 are raised to permit the drawer to be moved in and out of housing ll without interfering with the fastening means 29 by means of which the front end of metal strip 25 may be secured to tubular bar 24. The opposite ends of the drawer 28 are supported on the top edges 30 of channels 3l embossed inwardly from upper cross bars 23. The top edge of the side wall 32 of drawer 23 is curled, as indicated at 33. An angle iron .Mextends horizontally across each side wall I3 above the upper cross bars 23. Each angle iron 34 is secured at one end to angle iron 22 and at its other end to iiange Il, and iits against the top of each curled portion 33 of drawer 23. These curled portions extend along the top of each side wall of the drawer. The angle irons 34 and upper channels 3l permit sliding movement of drawer 28 but prevent the front end of the drawer from sagging downwardly when the drawer is pulled forwardly to open position. The drawer is provided with conventional drawer pulls 35 to facili- L tate pulling the drawer to open position.

The lower drawer is a duplicate of the top drawer and is supported on the lower metal strip 25 and the lower cross bars 23 in the same manner as the upper drawer, except that the curled portions 33 of the side walls of the drawer are supported by the lower edges 35 (Fig. 7) of lower channels 3i instead of by an angle iron 34.

The forward end of each cross bar 23 has a rubber bumper 36 secured in channel 3l. A lip 31 struck inwardly from channel 3l abuts the rear end of the rubber bumper to keep it properly positioned with its forward end projecting slightly beyond the front end of the channel, as indicated at 38, Fig. 9. When the drawer is moved to closed position the projecting portion 38 of the rubber bumper engages the rear surface of the front wall of the drawer to cushion the termination of the closing movement.

The chest of drawers comprising the housing ll and the drawers 28 slidably lmounted in the housing may be handledy as a unit in securing it tothe bed or in removing it therefrom. The brackets 1 are easily accessible. The interengagement of the pair of studs at Ythe forward end of each side of the unit with the pair of brackets at each Side of the chest of drawersl affords suflicient support so that no additional support is required at the rear end of the unit. The chest of drawers may be easily removed from the bed whenever itis desired to clean it, or even when it is desired to clean the room, although it is not necessary generally to remove the chest of drawers to clean thereunder because the bottom of the unit may be spaced above the floor. It is preferred that brackets 1 be so positioned on legs 3 and that the unit be so dimensioned that a space is provided between the bottom of the unit and the oor. The front edge of the chest of drawers is preferably positioned behind the front edge of the bed when the drawers are in closed position so that the chest of drawers will not get in the way when people walk closely to the foot of the bed.

Although 1 have described a preferred embodiment of the invention in considerable detail, it will be understood that the description is intended to be illustrative rather than restrictive, as many details may be modified or changed without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention. Thus, for example, housing Il may have slidably mounted therein a single drawer or more than two drawers, as desired. Accordingly, I do not desire to be restricted to the exact structure described.

I claim:

1. In combination, a chest of drawers having a plurality of vertically aligned studs projecting laterally from its sides adjacent one end thereof and a bed having a foot board with a recess receiving said chest of drawers and a plurality of vertically aligned brackets on opposite sides of saidrecess, said brackets having upwardly opening notches engaged with said studs to support saidchest of drawers.

2. In combination, a chest of drawers having a plurality of vertically aligned studs projecting laterally from its sides adjacent one end of the chest and a bed having a foot board with a recess receiving said chest of drawersY and a plurality of vertically aligned brackets on oppositesides of said recess, said brackets each having an upwardly opening notch, each of said studs being positioned in one of said notches to support said chest of drawers in horizontal position from said one end only of said chest of drawers.

3. In combination, a bed having a head board and a foot board, a spring supported between said boards, one of said boards having a pair of legs and a recess therebetween, a plurality of brackets mounted on the inside of each of said legs, each of said brackets having an upwardly opening notch, and a chest of drawers having a cross sectional area of less magnitude than said recess, a plurality of studs projecting laterally from the sides of said chest of drawers adjacent the front end thereof, said studs being engaged with said notches to support said chest of drawers in a horizontal plane below the plane of said spring.

In combination with a bed having a foot board recessed to provide clearance for a drawer unit and a pair of legs spaced on opposite sides of said recessed portion, a drawer unit comprising a housing and a drawer slidably mounted therein, a plurality of vertically spaced brackets on the inside of each of said legs, each of said brackets having an upwardly opening notch, and a plurality of vertically spaced studs projecting from opposite sides of said housing, said studs being engageable with said notches to support said drawer unit.

In combination with a bed having a foot board recessed to provide clearance for a drawer unit and a, pair of legs spaced on opposite sides of said recessed portion, a drawer unit comprising a housing and a drawer slidably mounted therein, a plurality of vertically spaced brackets on the inside of each of said legs, each of said brackets having an upwardly opening notch, and a plurality of vertically spaced studs projecting from opposite sides of said housingfsaid studs being positioned adjacent the front end of said drawer unit and being engaged with said notches ,to support said drawer unit.

6- A COmbDaOIl, a bed having a footbcard with a recess therein to receive a chest of drawers, a chest of drawers inserted within said recess in said footboard and connecting means extending only from opposed surfaces of said footboard 5 and the forward portion of said chest of drawers connecting said chest of drawers and footboard together, said connecting means including a plurality of vertically aligned brackets and respective cooperating pins, said brackets each having vertically extending notches open at one end with said pins received in said notches, said brackets and pins extending from opposed surfaces of said footboard and chest of drawers to xedly connect same together with .the chest of drawers supported substantially in a horizontal position from only the forward portion of said chest of drawers.
