3 Claims.
This invention relates to an extension for ladies undergarments such as brassieres and the ike.
One object of the invention isthe provision of an extension universally applicable to brassieres and the like to extend the effective length of the torso girdling belt thereof.
Another object of the invention is to construct said extension in such manner that the same is adjustable to provide diiferent amounts of extension.
Still another object .of :the invention is to construct said extension in such manner that the same is immediately applicable to 'a brassiere or the like without sewing.
A further object of the invention ,is .to construct the extension .in .such manner .that the same can be Worn comfortably.
A modified form of the invention has for its object the provision of 'means to prevent wrinkling or rolling up of .the .extension while the same is being worn.
A further comprehension :of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the followingdescription and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims .in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forminga material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a rear perspective view of a brassiere with the extension of the invention shown in position to be applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a 'fragmentary'enlargement of a portion of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is ,a sectional viewgonline .33 of Fig. .-2 with the thicknesses of the partsexaggrated for purposes of clarity.
Fig. 4 is an isolated perspective view of faho'ok component of the meansof Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view similar to Fig. 2 but illustrating a modified form of the invention.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 66 of Fig. 5 with the thickness of the parts exaggerated some- What.
Fig. 7 is a sectional view on line l'| of Fig. 5 with the thickness of the parts exaggerated for clarity.
Fig. 8 is a face view of another modified form of the invention.
Fig. 9 is a view of a spring wire component of the means of Fig. 8. r
Fig. 10 is an enlarged sectional view on line ill-l0 of Fi 8.
Fig. 11 is a fragmentary, enlarged sectional view on "line lI-H of Fig. 8.
Referring now to Figs. l-4 wherein a first form. of the invention is illustrated, the reference numeral l5 indicates a brassiere having a pair of torso girdling strap members .16 and II. In known fashion the strap nembers {Band I l terminate in elastic loops l8 and 20, theformer having secured thereto a hook-member 2 I adapted to engage one of a plurality of vertical bars 22 mounted on a fabric strip 23 -secured to loop 20.
According to the invention an ,extension 24 is provided to adjustably-increase the eifective length of the torso girdling vstrap 16, II. As shown, extension 24 -comprises ,-a plurality of filler strips 25 of fabricanda base strip :Zfihaving its side edges turned in to bind the filler strips, said edges beingsecured by rows of stitching 21. Oneend ofthe strips25and 26 ispinked as at 28 to provide a soft edge to. engage the body of the wearer, but the other end is bound .between-a pair of fabric endpieces 30. Secured in the bound end of the extension 24 by stitching 3! is a hook member-3 2 which may-be identical with the hookmember .2I1described above, and which, like the latter isadaptedtoengage one of the bars 22 associated with strap member I]. Spaced longitudinally along the centerline of the extension 2.4 are :a plurality of eyelets 3.3 which extend through alliof the-filler strips 25 but not through the base strip 25 which provides a cushion between the eyelets and the body of the wearer. It will-be readily seen that eyelets 33 are adaptedtote-engaged selectively bybrassiere hook member '21.
The construction is such that the.extension hook member 32 :is engageable'with any one of thebars 22 and the brassiere hookmemberwzl is engageablewith any :desiredxone of theeyelets 33 to extend the effective length of the torso girdling strap l5, ll different amounts.
In some instances a brassire is provided with wider strap members 16 and I"! as indicated in Figs. 5, 6, and '7 wherein like parts are given the same reference numerals as hereinbefore with a prime added. In this form of the invention, the brassiere is provided with two or more hook members 21 adapted to be engaged in the desired eyelets 34 arranged in horizontal rows.
To accommodate this form of brassiere, the invention provides a wider extension 24 having therein two rows of eyelets 33' adapted to be engaged by the hook members 2|. Extension 24' is also provided with a pair of hook members 32' for engagement in the eyelets 34. The construction of this form of the invention is otherwise the same as above except that a fabric strip 35 is secured atop the uppermost filler strip 25' between the rows of eyelets 33. It will be understood that whereas the extension 24' is shown as including two rows of eyelets 33' and two hook members 32 any number of each could be provided.
Referring now to Figs. 8, 9, 10, and 11 wherein like parts are given the same reference numerals as hereinbefore with a double prime added, a modified form of the invention provides means for preventing wrinkling or curling up of the extension while the same is in use. The extension 24" with which said means are shown applied embodies two rows of eyelets 33" and two hook members 32", although any number of each could be provided. The anti-wrinkling and rolling means comprises a length of spring wire 36 in the form of a U having angularly spread side arms. According to the invention said side arms are compressed to thedot dash line positions of Fig. 9 and are inserted between the flapped over edges oi the base strip 25 and the topmost filler strip 25" of the extension with the base of the U away from the hook members 32". If desired the end of extension 24 adjacent the base portion of Wire 36 can be pinked as hereinbefore but preferably, the end of base strip 26" is flapped over the topmost filler strip 25" and secured in place by a row of stitchingti.
The construction is such that the wire 35 acts :as a frame for the extension 24" and prevents the same from wrinkling or rolling, but which allows the same to conform to the bodily configuration of the wearer.
Further, due to the positioning of the wire between the flap-over While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United :States Letters Patent is:
